    I agree about the ending of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I totally agree about James Baldwin.

    Great answers! A Clockwork Orange is a favourite of mine, as you know. I really need to read LOTR and James Baldwin! 😊📚

      I highly recommend both Baldwin and LOTR, though perhaps not the latter while you are tbr focused! 😂

    Loved this! So chuffed to see you championing genre fiction,LoTR is a masterpiece! It definitely paved the way for so many of the amazing fantasy books we have today.
    I really need to read A Clockwork Orange at some point.

      I have enjoyed so many books which owe everything to Tolkien - it’s such an important book to me for that reason. Yay - you should read A Clockwork Orange - it’s short but packs a punch!

    It was a lovely surprise to see you had done this. It is such a fascinating question and I got to reflect on it all over again listening to your thoughts. Thanks for adding the Oscar Wilde quotations.

    I have just read The Picture Of Dorian Grey. It is certainly a story of two halves. Really glad I have read it through. As I am The Tenant of Wildefell Hall. My own Jury is out on the ending because in some ways I did like the ending and in other ways I really didn't.

      I was definitely sad to not be in the group discussion for the ending of TTOWH - I bet it was fascinating!

    This was a brilliant chat Jack - reminded me of many books I want to re-read and read. Cranford, I also do need to read Wilde and Collins.
    Of course LotR is classic. It's a genre blend fitting in both fantasy and classic for me like 1984 is classic and sci-fi/Dystopia.
    Character inner strength, courage, loyalty, mercy, environmental themes. It is not just magic and swords which many non-fantasy readers presume and write off fantasy to be.

      Exactly! Fantasy is an amazing vehicle for powerful, human themes. It is the best genre!

      Resonated so hard with the themes that Hobb explores. Pratchett obv has so many things we can take and apply in our world #justice for fantasy! 😉💜📚

    📚 So many controversial opinions/questions about what constitutes classic literature. It’s going to still be in debate long after I’m gone, I think! 😅

    • @spreadbookjoy
      @spreadbookjoy  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Most definitely! The debate itself is becoming a classic! 😂It’s such a complex one once you start unpacking it, but a fascinating discussion for sure!

    I definitely consider Lord of the Rings classic literature even though I haven’t read it. I can’t wrap my head around fantasy. Yes I agree that A Christmas Carol is one of the best classics ever. I am a baby boomer, age 73, so I read/saw Clockwork Orange at the time it came out. I had NO CLUE why it was popular. And still don’t. 😂
