    What I will say on the free DLC - this is a team that waited years to announce a release date. They are very honest and intentional with what they’re doing. I’m sure they’ve run the numbers and considered the consequences, and they wouldn’t announce free DLC if it wasn’t feasible.
    Of all the upcoming life sim games, Paralives has the most hype and biggest following. I think they’re going to be just fine.

    • @UnapologeticYen

      plus there is a lot of things out there that have free updates when you buy the base core. everyone is so brainwashed by EA and Maxis to think that free doesn't exist and that's so sad. I say that because it's been compared to Sims a million times and not it's own game within the same category. I gave an example last comment, Second Life creators do this. They get money off base sells and people see your avatar using said purchase and they themselves go and buy it and boom the creator still makes a ton of money. I think Paralives will be fine just like what you said because of the game looking as amazing as it does before launch day. It's okay Satch and commentors breathe Free updates do exist and they can still make a lot of money, especially since they themselves boldly states it, they are not worried so you shouldn't be either.

      I'm honestly happy because this same model is the same with Stardew Valley which is a one time purchase only. If would buy Paralives even if it's 40$ if I know that it's the only purchase that I will be needing to play the game.

      I have to agree here, and while I absolutely want to see this team win financially I also have to be realistic and say that The Sims has drained me financially over the past 24 years and purchasing packs and kits and store items and expansions solely to attempt to replicate something similar to myself, my family and friends, and my daily life has been such a terrible experience over the years. I really don’t want to have to fork out a bunch of money simply because I’m a horse lover, a plant lover, and a book lover who is multiracial and lives in a rural farming town, if you get my drift. I totally get everyone wanting the team to profit, I want the same thing. But I don’t think EA’s model works and I would like the simming community to see that other games use much more affordable models and use them well.

    I was watching another video on paralives and there was a comment that basically said games dropping without DLC is the norm with updates sporadically from the developers. It’s simmers who think paid DLC EA game model is the norm. So let’s just see if paralives can do the “normal” thing and not just expect the worse because that’s what we’re use to

    • @JulianNS
      @JulianNS Před 5 měsíci +8

      Think same 🫶🏻

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife Před 5 měsíci +15

      What is ‘normal’ tho. Different types of games have different norms. Comparing say a ‘Last of Us’ to ‘Overwatch’ would be a fallacy in comparison as far as maintenance needs. You make a sequel to a game like the Last of Us and that makes the studio more money. The sequel.
      Disney Dreamlight Valley is a good example of a game that made a promise they couldn’t keep when they said ‘no paid DLC’ and then had to go back on it to their own detriment.
      Technically Sims has free updates, updates are a smaller affair. When you say DLC people think you mean indepth huge additions to the game.

    • @YazzyJ718
      @YazzyJ718 Před 5 měsíci +31

      @@TheDawnofVanlife I think paralives can should be able to come up with their version of normal. The Sims/Ea cast a big shadow. Just because their shadow is there doesn't mean it's the correct way or even best way. Right now with the money they've been getting on patreon they must see the value on their product and know they will have people who will buy it because they've been supporting for years.
      If they go the way of dream light valley that'll be a damn shame. That was tacky and gross.
      Right now we can only go on their word.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife Před 5 měsíci +9

      @@YazzyJ718 I think the mistake is thinking that those of us who are skeptical want the EA model. I think most people DO NOT under ANY circumstances want the EA model of locking MAJOR FEATURES behind a paywall. No one wants that, that being said there will come a point where sales slow down .... it's just gonna happen. I think what a lot of us are saying is if Paralives is good, helping sustain it is very important to us. But giving to a patreon every month can get quite expensive, I recently had to drop some patreon support in a few spots not because of the creators i was supporting doing anything wrong, but because my personal circumstances changed. I honestly prefer when people have a kofi because it's a one time gift. But some sort of paid thing, even if it's cosmetic stuff is worth it for content that is GOOD.
      The problem with Sims 4 is lack luster buggy content and ignored issues over years and years and the dwindling size of expansion packs since the Sims 1/2/3 days. Not to mention the pack teir system they have now that means litterally nothing in the end as the difference between a game and expansion pack is so negligible. It's not a problem that the packs cost money. It's that cost is increasing with content and features for said money decreasing by a lot. And some things should have been free updates instead of overpriced packs. Like Strangerville is a legit side adventure (pay for it, sure) but seasons....jeeze give weather to everyone. Compatablity system...why is that locked in a pack? etc etc Litterally ANY animal. Just add it to the game for everyone.
      That being said, there was an intentional choice made by the Parralives team and we'll see how it all shakes out. IF they want to find a different way to sustain, I am all for it. I don't think Patreon can sustain them forever, there's lots of reasons people have to leave being a Patreon supporter. And Patreon is a subscription service so over time in ways it's more costly then the flat price of a single purchase video game. If it turns into an elitist culture of insiders who get special privileges after the game is released (in development the model currently makes sense) it could end up feeling worse than fairly paid for DLC available to everyone. Also, once people have the game, it's just expected there will be some people who leave the Patreon. What they have now is no guarantee of what they will have moving into the future or growth once there is a full 1.0 drop.

      Sort of like Apple started doing free OS total system upgrades for free (instead of paying $200 for Windows new version…I think they offer free upgrades as well recently…idk, no Windows in our house) as well as providing, for free, fully fleshed out Apple version of Microsoft Office (among many free programs…it’s fully functioning right out of the box.) They make the money in brand loyalty, not licensing for discount versions, and for charging a premium for their products…plus design, packaging and customer service are important (admittedly…well, everything changed after 2020!) They think different. 😁 Maybe it’s something like that?

  • @Carlos.Castillo91
    @Carlos.Castillo91 Před 5 měsíci +365

    You forget that Patreon is their main way of monetising this franchise, most people will continue to support with their membership if they're getting more than they are paying with the subscription, and a lot of them will probably get the game for free if they signed up from the start, so any further continuation of the game will very likely rely on these people. You will have both types of clients, and since the game has grown and developed so much thus far, it seems very likely to be sustainable in the long run.

      @@zissid Exactly. And even if eventually they do decide to charge for any additional content, I doubt that it will be received negatively, but I definitely don't see it happening, just like ConcernedApe, as long as you keep your costs low and you don't rely on servers or any kind of "cloud service" the game purchases will be more than enough to provide a lot of revenue to Alex and the company.

Look at Stardew Valley for example, the game has big free updates every other year and is doing very weel gaining new players and keeping their fanbase loyal and engaged. I agree Paralives shouldn't have said they will "never" have paid DLCs though, because now they can't release any without seeming disingenuous. Like there are people who aren’t talented or gifted musicians who still learn how to play an instrument it just might take them longer and involve more effort. Also just because you are generally gloomy doesn’t mean you are with everyone or all the time. I see the vibe as your general ‘vibe’, not that you are incapable of being the other things.

      @@tetramputectureI honestly don't want them to have to stretch tho. Maybe cause I do budgeting, but I am like 12 people is A LOT actually to give everyone a decent salary, provide equipment, pay all the bills it takes to run a studio. Sure it's not EA level of cost and shareholders but it's no small bill that can be sustained in nothing for 12 whole people live comfortably and be able to do their job. EA could afford to give out free packs all year and not hesitate to pay anyone, Stardew updates are also very spaced out and irregular. What many of us are saying is we are happy to pay for that which is worth the money to expand the game. Especially to make it the best full life Sim ever.
      Stardew deals with ONE aspect of life, farming pretty much. Project Zomboiid also has one narrow focus on being a survival game (great game, this isn't a criticism). A full life Sim offering us maybe a side adventure as an add on is almost giving us another game within the game and as long as they don't charge for things like adding school or an attraction system or weather (like those being free Updates, not DLC, Updates) makes sense....but I am happy to pay for a Safari adventure pack with a whole new map and maybe a gear pack specific to that adventure addon. This far into the future, after 1.0 is released not during Early Access. Cause the work a massive adventure addon is different from adding a few new recipes and a rice cooker and locking that behind the paywall of an apartment builder pack (looking at you EA). 😒

There are little symbols under the relationship meter and there is a soft pink indicating interest, and the higher the 'interest' the more the crush. You can't build relationships fast in Sims 1, you can get a high friendship but that interest or crush has to build over time or they won't accept any romantic overtures.
    It does worry me that they already said "never" to paid DLC, because of the reasons you have stated. I feel they needed to have kept that option open depending on how well the game does. And yeah, small packs with unique LOOKING items rather than unique gameplay can be in little optional paid packs, if I really like a game I will do that to support it.

I think of the Sims 2 which is pretty much a universally beloved game, but even still there are so so so many mods out there that change all sorts of aspects of the game. Not because it’s a bad game, but because it’s a sandbox and we’re all fairly particular about exactly how we want things to go. If Paralives nails the basics, modders and players will tweak it to our liking as needed, with the underlying structure being the perfect base.

    Yeah, it always bugged me about the Sims that guitar/piano/violin etc were all different skills. I started off as a bassist and I picked up guitar very easily (and piano is basically the starting point; if you can play the piano you can basically pick up any instrument way more easily).

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife Před 5 měsíci +5

      Honestly that was kinda an improvement as in sims 1 and 2 with enough creativity skill you could play piano as easily as you could write a book or paint. Like you could build all you creativity points painting and pick up an instriment for the first time and just be good. And that made no sense but the creative skill was a catchall for everything under the sun that one called ‘creative’. But if Paralives had found a happy medium between the two extremes, that would be awesome.

    I genuinely think the personality system struck the perfect balance. The focused simplicity allows for imagination and depth jn gameplay.
    I think the combination of vibes, social perk, talents, and sleeping/cleaning habits, actually creates an unspoken personality for the Para. And they can apply them throughout gameplay, way better than they could if the devs had to juggle 50 different personality traits. Sims 4 is a good example of how that went wrong.
    The only thing i wish was added is a fear system.

    Honestly, I think cause this project is crowdfunded, whether they make a massive return or not is not a HUGE issue compared to a project funded by a investors/shareholders. So really *any* sales they make will be a profit, assuming they're not spending over the crowdfunding income in production. Then considering that they're not EA, they do not have EA's astronomical overheads in the form of thousands of employees, literal real estate in the form of office spaces, advertising and extremely money hungry CEO's and shareholders.
    A crowdfunded company/project does not rely so heavily on shareholders being happy.
    Also remember that games having paid DLC is a relatively new concept. There are many a successful game studios of old that released single games, then used the profit from that single game sale to fund their next project. That's how it worked. And it still does work like that, but companies like EA are just taking such an astronomically high amount of money in, while cutting every cost they can to deliver the product. That was not normal.
    Stardew valley is a very sucessful single purchase game, with only free updates. Safe to say the dev is doing well.

  • @liahnotleah
    @liahnotleah Před 5 měsíci +4

    I don't think the issue is whether or not sims (or paras) need to have "depth". Yes, there is beauty in simplicity, but in a video game like this, if there aren't more way to create a sim/para, then every sim/para is going to be the same. It's one of the biggest issues Sims players have: the sims are very two dimensional because we don't have an in-depth personality customization. We can choose 3 traits for our sims and that's it. And half the time those traits don't even do anything to impact gameplay.
    Now imagine Paralives characters since Paralives has even less personality customization. Yes there are more personality categories, but not a lot of options. 4 "quirks" or whatever their called, can only choose 1 vibe, 1 social perk, 1 talent........ Sims 2 and 3 blew personality traits out of the water. It wasn't "in-depth" like how Satch is trying to describe it, but it did make Sims feel a little more different from each other. When I make sims in Sims 4, every single one just feels like a carbon copy of the other slapped with a different outfit on.
    It doesn't look like Paralives will have much variation with such a limited personality creator. You could probably get like.... I don't know.... three different Paras out of it? And just like Satch said before: what about people who want to make paras that are both serious but also peaceful? Or a para that is both good at making friends but is also good at being alone?
    If we're only limited to making 1 or 2 choices, there won't be much variation available to play with and it get real boring real quick.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife Před 5 měsíci

      I think the thing with traits vs personality points is traits are very on the nose, being generally creative could go a lot of different ways and it adds more depth then 1000 traits and five billion "conversation" topics that are added to the unending pie menu. With much less (and personality points), the Sims in Sims 2 were much more unique with way more personality. I think "more" and "depth" are disconnected and that there is already more depth in Paralives from this then Sims with all it's DLC and traits. I think the mistake has been thinking adding more to an already broken system will change anything. Ultimately I find, for example, all friendly interactions will utimately progress to the same end game. Where as if the prompt is to talk about working out while we are working out, where even a flirt is about the situation of working out vs generic from the flirt pie choices it's way more immersive. To be creative and have my Para pick up a camera as opposed to me selecting photography in the creation of them feels more immersive. Paralives with the situational conversations feeling more naturally prompted already has depth to me. And the personality system seems like a source system more likely to naturally grow as the Para exist vs me arbitrarily setting hardcore CAS traits.

    re: paid expansion packs and such, i think you're forgetting that paid DLC is relatively a new concept within the world of gaming. paying for a game once and having all the content used to be the norm until big corpos decided to find a way to squeeze even more money out of players through the same product. i think it's great that paralives is going against that, and since they're a very small team, the income they get from sales alone should be plenty to sustain them imo. the same thing happened with stardew valley. i can only hope more and more games begin moving back in this direction.

    So funny one of the first things that came to mind was that the game is a bit like a mobile version of the Sims and then you mentioned near the end that other people were saying it too. For me, it's not because of the graphics but because of the gameplay. Since there are fewer choices to make compared to the Sims (which is too "open" so to speak), Paralives looks like it operates more simply than the Sims, which kinda makes it perfect as a mobile game. Not sure how much more in-depth the rest of the game is, though.

    the gameplay showcase made me change my mind about Paralives. I used to think this was gonna be the ultimate Sims-killer, but now that we've seen what the gameplay feels like, i no longer think that. Not because i don't think Paralives will be successful, on the contrary, i think it'll be EXTREMELY successful, but i think Paralives is going for a completely different vibe from The Sims. While it has the same core gameplay loop as The Sims, it feels a lot closer to Townscaper, Stardew Valley or Tiny Glade. It's a Sims-like that plays like a tiny, cosy indie game. For what we've seen, it doesn't have that quirkiness, that zaniness, that over-the-top weird and wacky feel that The Sims (especially Sims 1, 2 and 3) have. That being said, it's also not a hyper-realistic simulator like Life by You or InZoi. It strikes that perfect balance between a cartoony, over the top *game* and a more realistic *simulator*
    That being said, i think that you'll appreciate Paralives a heck of a lot more if you're more about the cozy and creative side of The Sims, rather than its crazy, wacky side. And because of this, i think Paralives can 100% coexist with The Sims, rather than completely replace it.

    I’m so excited for this game!!! It seems like it took the best of Sims 2 (my favorite) and actually with the conversations and building points towards things, you are “fleshing” out your Para as a person, as opposed to being set in one specific thing that is really repetitive. The flirting stuff looks cool…maybe you can’t meet someone, send them Social Bunny texts 10 times and be best friends, fully romantic, engaged and married in 3 Sim hours…like, it has a challenge to it. (Cause I like your channel, I think they can fill in that extra box with Evil…you gotta have some evil ones! But maybe that’s something that can develop out of the choices you have.) I don’t want to wait until 2025!!! (But, if they make the game and it actually works….I’ll take it.) Another idea that it wouldn’t have DLC and would have free Expansion packs makes me think it’s possible that there’s a monthly subscription fee instead? I would be okay with that, if I get tired of it, I can quit for a couple of months, but I can pick back up my subscription (and keep my save files on my own computer so I’m not starting from scratch each time.)

And overjoyed just means happy, whereas energetic is more of physical thing where you're hyper. Not everyone who is serious is grumpy, and not everyone who is energetic is happy. I think they are pretty specific.
