- Nightwish released Élan in February 13, 2015. The single also contains the song "Sagan", a bonus track what will not be released on Endless Forms Most Beautiful. The song is about astrophysicist and science communicator Carl Sagan.
LYRICS:
Make me wonder
Make me understand
Spark the light of doubt and a newborn mind
Bring the vast unthinkable down to earth
Always wary of a captive thought
Beware the very first unkind word
See who you are, where from, what of
Entering the unknown
Sending all the poets to the stars
Daring to see beyond the manmade
Woe to you who evade the horizon
Listening to Sagan
Dreaming Carl Sagan
Unseen streams
With understanding no poet is trapped
Woe to all who stop at the horizon
What kind of world would we call home
Our own
Oasis of love, humility and hope
Eradicating all that's not for life
What kind of aim would we call high
What kind of life would bathe in the brightest white
A limitless world will rise
Son of man, dare to let go of cowardice
Wish they had put this song on the album. It's so good.
One of my faves too. Better than Elan imho, but it wouldn’t have fit into the album in a stylistic manner
I love Carl Sagan but I feel like this is one of their weaker songs. I hope they revisit a Sagan theme in the future.
R M its beauty lies in its simplicity
One of the most beautiful song!
@@mrgoats The chances are they will. They invited Richard Dawkins as their live quest on stage at the end of "The Greatest Show on Earth".

This is perfect, period.
The band who pushed me into metal made a song of the man who pushed me to science. I regret not having learning of this song until this time. It's just perfect.
Wow same here, I just had the exact same thought. cheers
"metal"
Grosu Cosmin Ionut They basically kickstarted the whole genre of symphonic metal along with Within Temptation, so yes, they're definitely metal.
Grosu Cosmin Ionut symphonic beautiful metal
You will Perish, if your not careful.
I could hug Mr. Holopainen for this song alone. Love Carl Sagan. Rest in peace you old stargazer. You will be missed.
Carl Sagan & Eugene Shoemaker are legendary astronomer I ever heard. Kiitos Nightwish from Malaysia. RIP Carl Sagan & Eugene Shoemaker
I was going to make a joke but, wow. This song really is about Carl Sagan. I just... That's pretty cool actually... I like that.
Good joke man ;)
This and Shoemaker are absolutely stunning tributes 💜
This song for dreamers which is pushing our humans forward.
Thank You and Rest in Peace Carl Sagan: Wonderful... Sort of full circle for me. If it hadn't been for watching "Cosmos" back in the day, I'd never have heard of Vangelis... Now I've only just discovered Nightwish a few weeks ago trying to find "Cosmos" here on youtube! Guess he's still out there in the ether helping people find great music!
Listening to Jansen, dreaming Floor Jansen! Love. This. Song!
Here's to you, Mister Sagan. Thank you for pioneering what most thought was futile. You will be remembered among the stars. We will see to it.
And when I am on another planet or galaxy.... I will write your name on the alien soil.
Wow..Carl Sagan a legend...Nightwish a living legend ...deep respect to both !
2015 : Sagan
2020 : Shoemaker
Who's next ?
Hawking what a great man
Armstrong, please!
Definitely Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. Would be the second Finnish band to make a song for him.
Stephen Hawkin
@@staropramen478 Wich band was the first?
2:47 Tuomas is really a genius, here is the theme of The Understanding, the fourth part of The Greatest Show On Earth. I like how in this song (TGSOE), he took some elements from other songs on the album and integrated them wonderfully into the whole songs. And now I discover he even did it with the Bonus Track ! Well done, very well done.
Indeed. I keep trying to point everyone towards the brain, but all they focus on is the voice.
Dang, I never made that connection, but now I definitely hear it. That's so cool!
Wow, never noticed this connection! What other elements from other songs did you find in TGSOE ?
I honestly regard Tuomas as a transcendental poet.
Oh wow, now where you mention it... that makes it even more awesome:D
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it
everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every
human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our
joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and
economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward,
every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant,
every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child,
inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt
politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and
sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust
suspended in a sunbeam.
I know I'm late, but this is honestly beautiful.
Wow I'm speechless
Thinking of the photo he was talking about really puts everything into perspective. It's humbling.
Pretty much sums up how small we actually are!
Those words are featured in the new single they released today "Ad Astra".... Carl Sagan RIP, is a legend. So is Tuomas and Nightwish.
Love the rocket launch sound at 2:19!
Entering the unknown and sending all the poets to the stars indeed! Even non-poets like me, I freaking love this song! Thanks to Cosmos and Carl Sagan
We're all poets of our own lives.
I never noticed before, but at the start of the second chorus, it sounds like rocket boosters launching in the background.
This song made me cry. I'm in love with it.
Me too
we are both
criminally underrated track here
Voisin kuunnella näitä uuden levyn biisejä vaikka ikuisuuden. Kiitos Tuomas Holopainen!!!
Another gem from Nightwish! Magnificent!
This song just highlights what a good fit Troy is into the band ❤️ beautiful
Tuomas Holopainen great composer!!!!
Thiis song makes me think of my love, the woman that saved me from my troubled past. The only thing worth fighting for in this world for me. Rock on.
I've heard this song many times before, but somehow the echo of one of the themes from The Greatest Show on Earth around 3:00 always gets me. Wonderful composing by Tuomas, as always, on the whole Endless Forms album.
I miss this on the new album.
The intro has a strong Amorphis vibe. Great song! :)
Im dłużej słucham tej piosenki to coraz bardziej ją lubię! Wspaniała
madcin1 Tuomasowi rzadko wychodzi słaby utwór :)
Nightwish great band. Tuomas Holopainen great composer.!!!
I love this song I can actually listen to this all day!!✴✳♥✳
Why isn't this masterpiece in Spotify?
Nou fu**** idea
Its perfect..
same reason why kayne west has 22 grammys...
I think this track is a bonus in the japanese album version or so. Bullshit to keep one of the best tracks of the album exclusive imo.
Nuclear Blast has recently had something similar with the new Sabaton album. First album track apparently missing online, which is especially annoying since musically the last tracks references the first one (first about the start (sarajevo), last about the end of the war).
I've got this on loop again. Tearing up... we've had some truly good people who walked on this earth.
The best Nightwish song
That flute solo is the best part of this song
Great song about great man
This should’ve been on the album. One of the best songs from EFMB recordings. 💜💕
Carl Sagan & Nightwish
It’s sad it’s not even on Spotify
That solo is just about one of the best things I've ever heard.
Absolutely gorgeous🥰 very glad I saved this song for a rainy day
❤️ both the music and the content of this song! 🤘🏼
Why have i never heard of this before, RESPECT
I feel like this song should be on the album instead of Élan. Sagan would have worked much better as the lead single!
Some fundie preacher is gonna see this and use it as evidence that atheists have their own hymns that worship Sagan as a god.
And?
I'll keep a look out for Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron
Juuuuust wait. Some pinhead preacher will call this song satanic. It's only a matter of time.
+Taylor Holmstrom More like Saganic.
Hail Sagan!
fantastic song and big band.
It's been 7 years, and I still think of this song, frequently. It's so beautiful, I like it much better than Elan!
is better than half of the songs on the ,,Endless forms most beautiful"!
So you say. EFMB is easily their best album in my, and Tuomas's, opinion.
every artist says that the best is the latest album
Not sure every artist calls their latest album their ultimate creation, but I guess only Tuomas knows for sure.
he said that the Dark Passion Play is their absolute, and here I agree
DPP is my second favorite Nightwish album and it's what made me a fan, but IMO EFMB is a better album end to end than anything they have ever done. As for what Tuomas really thinks ... who knows.
It is honestly such a shame that this song is only available through a handful of mediocre quality uploads on CZcams. Wish they'd publish it officially on streaming platforms as well. I don't think if there are some copyright issues with the lyrics, but the instrumental version is available on some platform, but this one I could not find anywhere but CZcams.
This is an epic song and more than that.
Hail Sagan!
This song is so fire
Hey nightwish : please take my money.
That Oceanborn's vibe...
Nightwish DNA is still there!!
This doesn't sound anything like Oceanborn.
Why are the goddamn bonus tracks always the best? XD
This song is so magical
i wish this had been the album cover.
Yeeting all the poets into space
Tarja and Floor might be more talented and/or qualified singers, but damn I really liked Anette's cheerful, jaunty style. I miss her so much. Imaginaerum is probably my favourite album.
Happy Birthday, Carl!
The first time i heard this song i though the flutes from 3:16 was a female voice.
"Woe to you who evade the horizon". Powerful.
i am always eager to listen to ur song....sucks all my tension,ego..ur voice is soo adorable.
I read Carl Sagan in the 80ies, when i was a teenager. I dont remind the title of the book, but it was like what Hawkins did later. History of everything. That books should be read by every pupil in school, but thats not the case. sad. Puts you in your place !!! Thats the ONE life you have, use it !
I hope that i will hear a song from Nightwish about Peter Sagan aka tourminator... :DD
Flankymanga and the artwork of the cover would be his wheelie in a green jersey! :D
Hope they make another song about Peter Sagan!
Today it's 35 years ago that the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. Let us never stop seeking and surpassing the horizons of our lives, ever going onward...
WHY WONT THEY PUT THIS ON SPOTIFY!
I believe in dreams and dreams do come true
floor jansen the godness
Nightwish: please add this to your set list when next you tour North America.
I need this song on Napster, the service that pays the best to artists per stream. 10x more than Spotify i believe.
hermosa Canción :D
Holopainen makes super melodies
Per aspera ad Astra!
i love song ♥
Carl Sagan forever.
Why this song is not on the album?? :\
+Enderman22 This song would have been made the album too long to fit on a single disc. And additionally, it didn't quite fit within the flow of it very well.
+Paradox.Sys I made a playlist where I switched out Yours is An Empty Hope with this one and actually flows really well in my opinion. Personally, Yours is an Empty Hope isn't my favorite on the album.
+Kevin Palafox I don't know. I think ever metal album needs some angry in it and YIAEH is definitely angry. I love it ..... even the growls. That being said this song is great and I agree should have been on the album.
why can't we buy it on itunes? :( it's not on spotify, I want this single
I want to buy the single too, please nightwish, make it available on iTunes! :(
+Mary Rose Neither on google play, only instrumental in Endless form most beautiful EP
+Mary Rose I've bought a golden vinyl. Great song, great sound quality. Try it ;-)
Epica 1985, or with mp3 fiber for 320 kb/s quality. ;-)
This should be the Cosmos End Credits.
Why not on Spotify?
I thougt I misheard her say 'dreaming Carl Sagan' when I first heard this song
Because I thought it was a strange thing to say. But it's better when you know the context
FANTÁSTICO CHOW
There is no god but Science and Carl Sagan is Her prophet!
God is Science? No, God is Nature, Cosmos. Science is our view of Him.
+Aron Featherf00t just different views ofbsame thing. My opinion.
We, and all other sentient life forms, are the universes attempt to understand itself.
We, and all other sentient life forms, are the universes attempt to understand itself.
+Dave Mason Exactly.
너무 좋다
Time to fly...
Hi can you mauve make a download link wit the background picture without the nightwish text for personal use ?
Kindly regards: nero the thinker.
This song makes me wanna go on a Classic RPG spree. Think i'll start with Baldur's gate

Except its not. There is absolutely no way to buy this song.
I don't live in the U.S. but someone I know who lives there bought it.
Is that Floor? I may have underestimated her...
This should so have been on the album instead of Weak Fantasy or My Walden..
Chris Bruno No, instead of Edema Ruh
Chris Bruno Or just as an extra track 😊
Wtf. Weak Fantasy and My walden are top 5 songs of the album
@@Ackotoctoc Nah nah nah. Edema Ruh is amazing. (I'm a book nerd)
1:06 Run Barry RUN!
No esta en Spotify
Does anyone in the UK know how this song can be bought? I've found the instrumental, but not the original...
UK person here: it was on Endless Form's EP, and that was it. So I guess you're gonna have to download it. Gosh, I'm late to reply on this comment xd
"WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO THE ASTRONOMER CARL SAGAN, BUT...Space is GREATER THAN HE COULD EVER DREAM!!!! May he rest in peace! My condolences to his surviving family and friends!!!!"
