    Chintzy. I'm checking mine right away.
    UPDATE: After checking mine, I happened to notice my unit has the "Speed-Start" feature whereby you can crank start using a pentagon shaped fitting on a power drill in lieu of the pull start cord. This feature is in the exact same area you experienced the plastic cover wear issue. In my case the two retaining bolts worked themselves loose creating a vacuum leak in spite of an o-ring seal on a metal cover disk/plate on my model. Just like yours it surely played havoc with the fuel mixture so mine wouldn't start either. A quick re-tightening with some Loctite medium strength thread-locker saved the day. No more starting issues. I now know more about Craftsman Weed Whackers and Zama carburetors than I ever wanted! Hopefully this will help folks with the "Speed-Start" option experiencing hard start/no start problems.

    Wow, I have two ws2200 Craftsman same thing, the pin came out and destroyed one completely internally. While this was going on the piston walls on both were scored really bad . Your the only person that I found who address the problem. I did the same diagnosis that you did. One is a 2019,the other 2020. They both look brand new on the outside. I will never ever buy anything craftsman again.

      I don't even know anything about fixing these problems and now I have a problem. I just bought a this model a couple days ago at Lowe's. The first day it ran great. I filled it twice with 50:1 premixed PowerCare mix. Last night I filled it a third time and now I can't start it. Today I have tried 4 times and still it would start. My other Craftsman is old and I was having problems starting that one so I figured I would buy a new one. This isn't normal for a brand new weedeater is it? If I can't get it running by tomorrow it's going back. Is there a better brand then Craftsman?

    I found the same thing on my Craftsman weedwacker and went to the Craftsman parts order site. I can buy the engine cover for $9.61 but that would not fix the pin coming loose. A new short block assembly which I would have to buy for $56.04 would replace the engine and cover but I haven't decided if I want to spend that much on it.

  • @deadmanwalkingbystump7950

    Great job of troubleshooting! I have a 4-cycle Craftsman, bought in 2015, which has numerous documented problems with the recoil starter system. The starter pawls are held on by tiny little e-clips and pop-off after about a year of use. Other people have had the plate that the pawl are mounted on, come loose from the shaft. Held on by a cheap star washer. There's a video on CZcams warning people about the many problems this model has (same as you referenced). Craftsman has become Crapsman and I have bought my last weedeater from them.

      Martin, Thanks for the comment. I know other brands have their problems but not like Craftsman. Craftsman has engineered defects. That's just sad. Stihl and Echo are starting to go cheap too which in my opinion is misleading to the public. Single ring pistons and plastics. It used to be Most people would buy on the reputation of a company. Now, people buy on price point making this a paper towel world. Buy it, use it, throw it away. Take care brother.

    Definitely a bad design by sears, today 2/19/2019 while watching this video I could pinpoint my trimmer problem, and sure enough when I check it, the part was cracked and the compression was lost, reason why it was not cranking, I customize the part by cutting half inch from the part seal it, put it back and wallah, the trimmer is working great, full compression and running smooth. Thanks for the video, it was a learning experience, and saved me from buying another trimmer. Next time I'll be more careful when buying another trimmer.

      Thanks (again). I felt so damn defeated after spending 3 days w/ manuals and watching 'how to' vids. I was proud of what I accomplished w/ newbie maintenance stuff. BUT ... defeated when it still wouldn't run right. After asking around for a month for a good repairman and getting the SAME *eyeroll* every time i said 'it's a Craftsman', I caught on to my fist mistake (buying a Craftsman). The repairman who charged me $90 for fuel lines and ignition coil obviously never even checked the spark arrester, much less the issue you discovered. I'm not paying him another dime. It's back to DIY, thanks to help from you guys, The You Tube Guru Network. I shall prevail ... and if I don't. i get to experience the blissful satisfaction of catapulting it into the woods w/ a proper send-off full of cuss words, never to be seen again. • @deankay4434
    @deankay4434 Před 5 lety +3

    WOW! After 3+ decades as an ASE Master Tech, I have never seen a single cylinder small engine that did not use a “Spiral-Lock” clip or even a snap ring on the crankshaft pin. Then to see a plastic crankcase end cover is crazy cheap. Press-fit pins are common but have to be pre-heated prior to achieve a proper shrink fit.
    As a “TIP” use a small propane tank w/hose and short length of brake line to locate area’s of possible vacuum leaks. This works great in hard to reach areas, gaskets, crank seals on two stroke engines while running. I have a metering nozzle with capture float “J-Tool” we used for RPM drop on lean mixture vehicles and works great on motorcycles as well. Shame on Craftsman for incorrect pin fitment. Sad!

    • @ZombieDaveAZ
      @ZombieDaveAZ  Před 5 lety

      Dean, the propane is an excellent tip! I dont know what they were thinking. The journal or elbow would have to be hot, the pin that fell out from a sub freezer an the fot would have needed to be closer tolerance for sure. Thanks for commenting.

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 Před 5 lety

      @@ZombieDaveAZ You are correct when it comes to heating for press fit, but I would guess that the machine was wrong specs. A simple connecting rod clip would be easier, cheaper and quicker. Motorcycles use needle bearings but most do not use heat as to damage the needle bearing upon installation. So, clips into a grove onto the pin to keep it in place would be best practice.
      My attack, would be to use plastic-guage on cover, bolt to proper torque, and find the actual gap. A round metal plate would hold the pin in place. I don't know what they have on the other side. That bothers me as it can move backward into the plastic cover or forward into the crankcase. When apart, a grove on both ends of the pin would allow for a clip, install front to rear, then rear clip installed last before plastic cover goes on.
      I have one that works, but dated 2014, so changes during failures of the 2 year warranty for emission would forced changes to newer models.
      My engineering handbook shows proper measurements for press-fit, interference-fit, heat-press fit, etc. It was my grand dad's book published in 1941. Pages are super thin but covers thread cutting and everything.
      People may not know, but the P51 Mustang V12 engine has a hollow crankshaft. Each journal is capped with a welch or frost plug looking cap driven in to keep oil flowing to mains and rods when running. It reduces over 100 pounds of weight for an aircraft engine for WW2. Crazy good engineering with casting from virgin iron as well.

    Thank you for posting this video! I have a Craftsman 71119 25cc 2-Cycle Straight Shaft WeedWacker Gas Trimmer (I believe it's the exact same one as in your video)
    that I bought on May 9, 2016. It just shut off as I was using it a few days ago or so. I spent hours trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with it after taking apart & cleaning the carburetor a few times & even replacing the spark plug (which I don't think even needed replacing). I even drained all of the fuel & got ethanol-free gasoline just in case the fuel had gone bad. After finding your video, it described everything that was wrong with mine, including that it has just about always (for as long as I can remember) bogged down when I squeezed the throttle. I took the back off & found that most of the plastic was worn/scraped away the same way yours was. I do yard work for my landlord & a couple of neighbors, so I need to either get this fixed (which it doesn't sound like there's really a way to do, from what you've said in the comments) or buy a new weed wacker very soon! I usually earn enough Sears ShopYourWay points through various things that I could get a new weed wacker pretty much for free from Sears, but that would probably take another month to accumulate that many points, so I'm somewhat screwed here. I'll call Sears later & bitch at them about this, but I doubt they'll do anything for me. What brands do you recommend that would most likely last forever, and/or just require basic maintenance every so often?

Sad to see sears has gone to selling low end products for premium prices. Also, the little homelite trimmers have an issue with the case cover/shroud becoming loose to the poiint jit creates an air leak and will do pertty much the same thing as far as running is concerned. I have found most times you can reseal by just tightening the 4 screws that hold it to the case. From what I can see is two opposing metals used for the crank pin assembly. Maybe a couple drops of locktite red could keep the pin in place? Worth a try.

Try squirting sone of your fuel mix directly into the carburetor with the throttle and choke held open while you are squirting. See if you can get it to sputter or run for a few seconds. @@sissymurphy9620 I see and have a few videos on Troybilt trimmers and just dont have alot of faith in them. It sounds like you have a large property and need reliability. You asked my opinion so here it is. I would go to the local Stihl dealer and asked to see what they have in a weedeater as long as it is a 4mix. I literally work on hundreds of these machines and all I do is valve adjustment (usually 1 time a year) and carb adjustments. They are very powerful and most of all reliable. You do have to mix oil in with the gas even tho its a 4 stroke engine. You will see that when you read the manual. This will be the last trimmer you will ever need and should you decide to upgrade or sell it at a later date it will bring a premium as a used piece of equipment. Then there is the factory warranty. I believe you can actually extend it to either 3-5 years. Yup, you are gonna pay more, BUT, you save in the long run. Thats my opinion. Echo also makes a good product for less. Parts are more expensive for repairs tho. I hope that helps.

    Interesting. I picked up one like this. It's a 25 cc incredi pull. Can't get it to start. But I think my problem is in the carb. Previous owner says he replaced the carb. But something doesn't seem right with it. Like maybe it's not the correct carb. It's got a different choke/throttle mechanism that I've not seen on weed wackers. Like they're tied into eachother on the bottom via a lever. I don't think it's working correctly and I can't find any info on these specific carbs

      michael nowak I fixed this for a friend, I don’t have the unit. What I did is took the plastic piece....if you don’t have it....jb weld that pin...a little bead paste around the pin...I did it anyway just so that pin would not fall out.
      smile.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-Temperature-Resistant-Metallic/dp/B01IBOBY74/ref=sr_1_8?crid=2X9EMXBWP1U2L&keywords=jb%2Bcold%2Bweld&qid=1558691244&s=gateway&sprefix=Jb%2Bcold%2Caps%2C162&sr=8-8&th=1
      I got a bit fancy 😆 and modified the sloppy plastic crank cover piece and jb weld that from the inside and used rubber washers to gauge the distance to that pin. Got a metal washer and modified the diameter and lined everything up with the metal washer first over the pin...then the rubber washers.then put the cover back on. I used my dremel to smooth the surface.
      Kinda off topic but related to small engines. My dad picked up a TroyBuilt Power washer a couple of years ago at Lowe’s. It was outside in the marked down area. He got it for $45.00 no joke! It did not come with the hose and wand but I have a few extra zombies (love it😆) that don’t mind helping.
      Anyway, the carburetor was cracked,. Whoever had this to tried to fix and cracked the the case where the mounting bolts attach. I jb welded and it has help up. Getting back to what you said about quality. These manufacturers don’t care. They have ppl like us that know how to modify their cheap crap.

    • @ZombieDaveAZ
      @ZombieDaveAZ  Před 5 lety

      Not always this problem Darrell. The way you described it is a rich condition. I was fighting a lean condition. If you have to hold the throttle open then you are allowing more air to mix with the fuel and leaning out a rich condition. If you are comfortable with tinkering a little, remove the muffler and tip the machine towards the muffler side and shake it like crazy. We are looking to see if any fuel is in the crankcase and if it will come out. If no fuel comes out check the carburetor adjustment screws. COUNT THE TURNS as you screw them in so you can set them back to original if needed. Start with the needle jet closest to the engine. It may even be marked with a "L". Turn it all the way in but not tight. Whenn you feel it bottom out, turn the screw counter clockwise 1 and a half turns. Leave the jet marked "H" alone for now. Try and start the machine. Only use a little throttle if needed. Try to get the machine to idle using only the L screw. Screwing it in will allow less fuel into the engine and screwing it out will allow more fuel. Check and try these things and let me know how it goes.

    I'll check tomorrow to see if this is the issue!
    As I can't even find the Hi /Lo carry adjustment?
