@@TwoMadExplorers In the short time you guys have been there, you have met many nice people from what I've seen. Only one woman did you wrong and she unfortunately stood out. But there were way more nice people you've interacted with than not. She shouldn't really have to buy foreign travelers a meal to be considered nice - especially when you consider foreigners have the means to travel abroad, unlike the locals whom make way less money and will likely not have a chance to travel to foreign countries in their lifetime.

Us Vietnamese love to eat it because it's rich in antioxidants and numerous minerals, not to mention a great source of fiber and crunchiness. 26:11 is fried fermented pork roll. The unfried version is used more in many different Vietnamese dishes, notably the Southern version of bánh cuốn. Since you're in Hanoi, please try the Northern bánh cuốn, nầm bò nướng, bún cá, and chả cá Lã Vọng.

7:40 it's banana blossom. We often use it with noodle.
Next time when you order noodle with grill pork (Bún Thịt nướng)you have to pour the Fish sauce into the bowl and mix it well before eating instead of dipping.
Hi there. Actually you can mix all the ingredients all at once in the bowl if the bowl is big enough. Otherwise, you take piece by piece combining meat, rice noodles and fresh herbs for each bite to avoid the spill over.
I wish you guys would have asked the patrons or vendors how to eat the bun thit nuong and banh xeo because so many foreigners eat it wrong and so you miss out on the true taste of the food. Oft times, foreigners will then say it tastes bland, but they don't know that a lot of the food comes with sauces which is vital to the taste of that particular meal. For bun thit nuong, dump the bowl of flavored fish sauce into the bowl, mix everything up then eat. For the banh xeo, use the rice paper as a base if provided, if it doesn't come with rice paper, use a large piece of lettuce as the base. Then add in the herbs/fruits/veggies and lay a piece of the banh xeo on top. Wrap it up tightly then dip it and eat. You guys should look for nem nuong Nha Trang because I've seen people eat it in Hanoi and it looks legit. You guys will definitely love that particular Central region dish that originated from Nha Trang.

First off I just wanted to say you two are very humble and pleasant to watch. Love it. The Bún Riêu that you guys ordered you supposed to put the veggies in the soup and eat with everything (optional of course). By the way, the onion like veggies is called banana blossom shredded. The noodles come with fresh crab paste mixed with eggs and ground pork (usually don’t have beef) tomatoes, tofu. I’m Vietnamese and I can’t speak for everyone but I have to say that Vietnamese people have good manner and hospitality or not at all. 😂 I hope you guys had a great time in my home country. 😊

You are lucky to meet that lady who could speak english & paid for your meal. So blessed. Anyway there's this dish I really like it's called combination broken rice I just don't know what it's called in Vietnamese but it's really good & my fav when I was studying in Australia before
The broken rice dish is called com tam. They should probably wait until they get to the south to try that dish as I've not seen people eat it in Hanoi (although it's possible a southerner opened a restaurant that serves that there). But yeah, a lot of foreigners love that dish. The best ones come with the grilled pork, egg/pork meatloaf, fried egg, pickled veggies, etc.

I love the situations around eating, which is such a basic common thing, but in which you are culturally unfamiliar with what the heck to do with what you have been presented. It's a learning experience and takes it from "consumption" to an event. Well done again guys, as always.
Vietnamese food is very interactive. The problem with it is that many foreigners will eat it wrong and say the food is bland because they don't know that a lot of the food comes with dips or need to be mixed up prior to eating. This is why I always recommend those not familiar with Vietnamese dishes to go on a food tour or two the moment they get off the plane. The tour guides in Hanoi are often really awesome and very informative. They will teach people about the food and a ton of other interesting things about the city/country.

The crab roe are crushed field crabs. Very light and airy, almost like a soufflé but savory. I know I get full but don’t feel heavy.
Also, the fresh herbs and vegetables are eaten together with the food. Either add it to the bowl or wrapped up in a roll/wrap dish.

The term "nem chua rán" means "fried spring rolls", but the spring rolls was made by fermented pork meat with other toppings like onions, pepper...before frying on oils! Good appetite!

All those herbs that comes with bowl of noodles should be mix with your noodles! I learned this when I eat in a Vietnamese restaurant in HK n observed other diners how they eat their bowl of noodles.

You have to pour the fish sauce in your Bun Thit Nuong and mix well the whole thing together before eating it . The fish sauce makes all the difference in the taste of the food . Many foreigners don't know how to eat Vietnamese foods and complain that they are tasteless . Don't be shy to ask the waiter/waitress or the local people around you the right way to eat the food . FYI you should do the same thing with the Vietnamese coffees ( Egg Coffee , Bac Siu , Coconut coffee , Iced Coffee , etc...) and desserts .

Bún thịt nướng: Put the sauce in the bowl and eat all together. The scissor is for cutting the egg rolls into smaller pieces into the bowl and eat together.

Awesome video guys! I appreciate the very detailed explaining of the dish. Having said that, this is a noodle soup, please enjoy and incorporate the broth. The magic here is not on the toppings, but the heavenly spoonful broth of everything. Every spoonful is different and magical. Eat it, slurp it, while it’s hot. I can imagine how I will dive and devoured each spoonful of it as soon as it lands on my table. The magic is there, you gotta capture it spoonful at a time, with of course broth with everything! I envy you guys having this wonderful dish lol😂

NEM CHUA RÁN is fried NEM CHUA, Nem chua is a fermented pork dish from Vietnamese cuisine. It is mainly composed of a mixture of lean pork and thin strips of cooked rind, garnished with garlic and chilli. It can take the form of bite-size pieces wrapped individually in aluminum foil and paper, or a kind of cervelat in sealed plastic. It has a sweet-sour taste characteristic of lactic fermentations, a beautiful pink color and a firm and elastic texture. (wiki)
In fact, nem chua rán is not fried fermented pork. It has the ingredients nearly the same as nem chua but not fermented

That vegetable that you guys thought was onion or cabbage served with the bun rieu is banana blossom (in the US, it's hard to find banana blossoms, so we often use red cabbage instead).
In the US they're plenty in Vietnamese/Asian supermarket with high concentration of Vietnam ese.
One thing about Vietnamese food in Vietnam, they cooked right in front of you so you know what's in your food...
If you can speak Vietnamese like CZcamsr Max McFarlin, you don't even have to pay at many restaurants 😄

If there exist fish sauce with your food…most likely it is to go with your food either by dipping or mixing into your food. So glad the bún chã episode made up for the Apple incident.
Try the Vietnamese fruit. Trái na (sugar apple), trái măng cụt (mangosteen), trái vú sữa (star apple), trái sầu riêng (durian fruit), and Vietnamese ice-cream. They are delicious.
At 26:12, it's fried fermented pork(raw) rolls. The inside consisted of pork and pork skin. You can roll it up in the rice papers and vegetables. The fish sauce on the sidee is what you dip it into. You can add your fish sauce into your grilled pork, vermicelli bowl and mix it together. I'm so glad you found some good and honest Vietnamese😊.

You know banana tree when it come to the flower, they have their shape like the baseball shape. That shape they will become the banana later on. so they cut off that banana shape and they slice it up , and that become those have a vegetable put on the top of the small basket. just for you know this very good vegetable because it contain a lot of fiber
