  • This film looks at the history of York Debtors' Prison, built between 1701 and 1705, and now part of of York Castle Museum.
It shows how the building is used today, housing both exhibition galleries and behind-the-scenes offices, and how signs of the past, like prison graffiti can still be found.
It also includes extracts from the original Gaoler's Journal from the Prison.
The film was made as a partnership project between Genesis at York Museums Trust and the BA (Hons) History Degree at York St John University.
Second year students took part in a research and film project on York Debtors' Prison as a work placement, working with Aisha Ali-Sutcliffe, York Museums Trust, Paul Banks, Digifish TV and staff at York Castle Museum.

In the Felon's courtyard around the front there is loads of 18th/early 19th century graffiti still on the walls, it's worth a look.

Today we have invisible debtors prisons, endless intrest charges on credit cards.

Why go to a museum when you can just come to America and see modern debtors prisons.
