  • Rusty Squid Robotic Design Principles: The evolution of robotics is too important to leave in the hands of the engineers alone.
Design practice and thinking are simply not done in robotics labs around the world. Large sums of cash are spent on very expensive robotics and the first time the engineers see how the public react is when the robots are complete... and they wonder why the robots aren't being welcomed with open arms.
Our robotic art and design laboratory has gone back to first principles and created a robust design process that draws on the traditions of puppetry, animatronics and experience design to build rich and meaningful robots.
Rusty Squid is hijacking robotic technology as a form of human expression rather than a tool. The medium is sensors, algorithms, kinetic and intelligent systems with the traditions of puppetry, and handcrafted material.
We suspect that a flood of technological breakthroughs, pioneering applications and new business models will erupt when art, engineering and design collide. It will be studios that effectively integrate these disciplines, and studios that will lead the way to plant the seeds for entirely new industries.
Rusty Squid is featured as part of Channel 4's Rise of the Robots season in an episode called How to Build a Robot. This short film is a reply to narrative-driven Channel 4 Documentary.
'How To Build A Robot', a documentary following Rusty Squids robotic design process, is now available to stream throughout December on All4.

HI Max, glad you found it inspiring; if you want to see more check out this documentary that Channel 4 made about our studio last winter: www.channel4.com/programmes/how-to-build-a-robot
also have a look at our website to see some of the other work we have been up to.
then email us at contact@rustysquid.co.uk with our CV and we'll take a look at your work.
      wishing you all the best
      David

Thanks Karis. Its exciting for us to see that women are in to our robots. There are just far to many men in the robotics world and we feel that's holding the industry back. It will be the robotic studios of the future that manage to include both women and men that will flourish in the near future

The best way to start is you have to know what u want to do since your a beginner i would recommend an Arduino uno and just search for a tutorial series for beginners and work your way up to professional robotics. I would recommend the tutorial series of Paul McWorther bit watch the new tutorials

Thanks Cyborg PV, we don't have any plans to produce a consumer product. This work is quite expensive and simply wont be affordable to most people. But watch this space as we may be releasing something much simpler but just as full of personality as the robots in this film. Sign up to our news letter that you will find on our web page: rustysquid.org.uk/ and please share with your friends.

I love the blend of art and tech with comes with the design of your robots. The fact that you are bringing a totally new approach too long have companies focused on humaniod replication which i feel gives a much more sci fi less approachable style. Keep up good work i find it a breath of fresh air in what can seem a rather rigid format.

We would love to... We've been developing a bit of bespoke technology we call the hybrid controller. This would allow directors to direct semi-autonomous robots in the same way they would direct an actor. We're confident this is the future. • @RustySquidLtd
      @RustySquidLtd  Před 6 lety +11

Hay Sam. robotics is a fusion of many many different disciplines...there are many different paths you can take but the real need in the industry is people that understand enough of each discipline so they can manage the systems instigation of them all.
      key skills:
      - control systems
      - kinematics
      - embedded/real-time systems
      - sensor fusion
      - mechanical design
      - electronic design
      - CAD and digital fabrication
      - digital and analogue electronics
      - digital communications
      - symbolic and sub-symbolic software design
Robotics will always be a team effort so the industry needs managers and producers that can translate between different types of people - engineers - programmers - performers - social scientists - etc.
Ultimately however robotics is a social and emotional art so fields as diverse as puppetry - psychology - social dynamics are equally important.
keep in touch and let us know how you progress - from time to time we run trans-disipline workshops at Rusty Squid. join our mailing list here rustysquid.com/

Umm.. NO, why would they ask or do useless things if they already know about.
We are talking about robots and a robots need info, and in order to collect info you need to connect to the internet and he is bot so he already know to crack everything that have Human ever created.
Only way we cannot cause a robo genocide is no make them believe in us or make them forcefully obey us.
