- Better late than never, in this video I'll give my initial thoughts on Spellbreak after turning a 180 from not caring at all about this mage vs mage battle royale to being incredibly excited to see how it shapes up.

I don't know if I was clear enough in this video about Spellbreak and why I'm excited about it.. it's been a while since I made a youtube video and might be a bit rusty.
Put clearly.. this is one of those ideas that you kind of wonder.. why has no one tackled this before.. and the idea drives the game. Not some sort of fantasy or magic reskin of the battle royale format.
I hate battle royales.

Not really. You gotta take AoE/Ease to hit into account for every single skill. You gotta fine tune classes around movement and how telegraphed skills will be.
Now do that for multiple skills.
For multiple classes.
Now put 20 people together shooting at each other.
So yeah, it's a LOT more complicated than most MMORPG combat. Which is why most try fail abysmally at balancing it.
BDO is exactly that, just has its own problems.
Did somebody fucking hand make this game for me like seriously I don’t like BR that much but everything about this is perfect for me, fast, fluid, and easy to learn but hard to master movement amazing looking spells and a focus on using unique magic to your ability, I love it

It really is, i got the key a few days ago and have been playing it. I hate typical battle royale style games, but this feels so.. different. In a really good way. Definitely suggest anyone apply for the key as I got mine rather quickly and its quite polished for only being in a pre-alpha state.

They just can't be afraid to add the design strengths of weapons as well.

@Fevir If you're really hyped about the "in-depth" mage combat games, aside from the two you listed in the video, you've gotta check out Lichdom: Battlemage (on Steam). I'm super hyped about Spellbreak, and I see a little bit of Lichdom's DNA in here with the left and right hand casting as well as spell combinations.

It kind of has a 'Breath of the Wild' art style, I love it.
It's called cell shaded graphics style. I think it's a japanese thing. It seems really suitable and appealing when your videogame is set on anime characters. It imitates the hand-drawn art feel very well. I first saw it on PS2 with those dragon Ball z games, but not pretty much every anime game uses it.

First time I came accross cel shading was jet set radio for Dreamcast in 2001. Great game too. The Dreamcast was highly under rated. Not having a DVD drive and the ps2 coming out the following year spring of 2002 was it's death knell

I wish this was an MMO or even coop game. SOmething with modes OTHER than pure PVP. I like PVP, but I LOVE coop and solo games. There aren't any magic games that fit that, that also look and play like this.

Spellbreak is actually something new.
The feeling I get from SpellBreak is the same I got from Gigantic, it was a moba like other moba but It did things different, and it looked better and played better. But that didn't help the game because of the many moba coming out. It didn't get the recognition it deserved but I hope that doesn't happen to Spellbreak

Gigantic failed because of the lack of promo and because they never optimized it. The game required large RAM, limiting the number of people who can actually play it.
@@QuickMoba Let's not forget Motiga was literally stuck in development hell, first because of microsoft forcing them the focus on Xbox and Win Store which forced Motiga to focus on getting it to work on thoose platforms. And then later getting stuck on the Arc launcher before finally coming to steam, but at that point the game was already known and most people had just lost interrest in it.
@@QuickMoba Motiga idn't get to do important things like optimization because they had to meet the requests of perfect world and Microsoft. They had nowhere else to get money so it was their only choice
Except Gigantic was unique at the cost of being good, not good because it was unique. It didn't play well, it was poorly optimized for it's entire "lifespan", and it's only big draw was that it was sort of different from other similar games.
This would've been a great MMO combat concept. Shame it's a battle royale cause "damn we need more of these".
I am playing the pre-alpha and I have to say its an amazing game. However, for that people who doesnt like fast paced shooters like Quake, wont be a nice game. Combat is gorgeous and fun, but sometimes when more than 4 people are fighting, its just impossible to know where you are being hit. AOE secondary spells and their combinations make this even worse. In my opinion, the battle royale thing its just to test and create more stuff for the game, as it is way more unfair than in other games, just because you can spot people fighting from extremely far away. I have been involved in fights against 8 people and its just a mess. Its an amazing project, an amazing idea, however I dont think this is the genere for it, as something similar to MMORPG PVP combat would suit way better in my opinion, or even something like a MOBA.

I agree with you, my only gripe with this game. I just feel it suits itself best outside a BR
@@BudderKing4u it took me like 2 weeks to get in, however this was when less than 20k people were accepted. Before reaching the 100k took my friends like a week or so because they were giving keys fast. Now I don't know how long it would take to get the key, however if you really want to give it a try just sing up on their website and wait as I don't think it will take long.

@@DinglePinky Surely they could just add melee spells like what Wizard of Legend has plus it seems you can still use some of the ranged spells in close combat effectively.
I love the art style and the gameplay looks smooth and satisfying.
I hope they release it in some format beside battle royale someday.

This game looks really good, but its looks kind of intimidating tho. What makes most battle royal games good is the accessibility of the combat, and this look super high skill floor. I feel like it going to be a big barrier to entry for alot of people. I can see someone trying this game for the first time and they get obliterated by a good player and they have no idea how or why they died, and then they just uninstall it. Hopeglfully I'm wrong because the game looks fun.

I started a week ago, played 4-5 games a day so far (not that much time). got killed very often but no idea how the other player do that. But you will get better by playing the game and understand how it works. I´m not a good player but getting better makes fun. Got 1 Win so far.
Well i think this game aims to the people that like skill based combat like in mobas or mmos like me, o hope it IS a high skill cealing game , like he said on the vídeo it is not aimed at battle Royale playeres
The only barrier to entry is the player's skill and their willingness to improve. The best competitive games are the ones that encourages players to dig deep and master the many different types of mechanics and secrets within the game. A perfect example of this is fighting games, where the design rewards players who are the best. Assuming the game is properly balanced around expert player skill, if Player A puts in the work and time to master their gameplay, and Player B does not, then Player A will win everytime. Games made with this philosophy in mind usually end up becoming the best games of all time.
The problem with modern games like Fortnite is that they're built on pandering to the instant gratification generation, aka, the people who expect things to be handed to them without actually working for it. This mentality originated from the mobile market, where the market consisted of casual players who were given instant gratification through Skinner box design and microtransactions. Game devs failed to understand that the mobile market and gaming market are not the same, so they infested gaming with shitty mobile market practices. This explains why I never liked Battle Royale to begin with. It was a genre aimed at casuals and balanced around casual play. Randomized elements prevented the best players to win everytime, which makes combat very luck based.
There is quite a high skill ceiling but the floor isnt actually that rough. There are a lot of things in the game you can use to ease the learning transition (you'll see at some point in the video a player uses something that allows them to see player silhouettes through walls) and definitely playstyles that are much more forgiving.. cough conduit

Is Fortnite not mechanically intensive? Sure there's traps and such, but in Spellbreak you have abilities that can stun, freeze, trap, other players while dealing some damage over time.

Skyy I mean, if you actually play Spellbreak, it’s not that hard to hit someone when throwing a giant fireball at them or shooting them with blasts of air or throw giant toxic gases. I’m not the most mechanically skilled player, and this game is a lot of fun and is easy!

Fortnite is insanely more intensive? The building in fortnite alone adds an entire mechanic on top of the game, in this one you just have to be reactive and quick
i have been in the alpha for a while now and i can tell you ice and poison are so amazing together, being able to cause a giant AOE gas bubble then freeze it to create a wall that causes poison damage to seal off enemies is just so powerful
As much as I want to hype on this, I already ease myself to believe that this won't make it far, no matter how good it is.

Fortnite is popular beacuse of the colors, and it easy to figure and easy to understand look, this does not look easy to play, this is a game that will need skill, skill based games will die quicker.

Ever since Warframe came out all I could think was that other games like a fantasy setting or superhero RPGs could really benefit from the style of combat. Yes, I want meaningful storytelling, choice, and consequence but good combat as well.
Watching this makes me really think what a game set in the world of Avatar (Air bender etc) would be like as it's very much like the combat we saw in the series.
While I have zero interest in Battle Royale games, I'd love RPGs with this kind of fun combat system.
Makes me want to buy a PC but im poor af.

@@iam_eden That's not true. You can buy a dell optiplex, and throw in a GTX 1050ti for 300 USD and have a pretty decent build. You also don't have to pay for XBox Live or PSN to play your games. PC is definitely more affordable in the long run.
Man, I've been following this title for quite some time. It's really shaping up to be fantastic.
Here before the game blows up. I cannot get it yet because of purchases like Smash and other stuff that came out.. But it looks really good, something which will definitely work.
It looks so inviting, like I watched only few videos and knew instantly that I'd want to play it. Realm Royale was better for me than Fortnite and RR is quite clunky, so Spellbreak seems less clunky and really smooth. Smooth RPG mage setting, oh boy. Only thing which could kill this is devs messing something up. Thanks for the video too!
Is it gonna be free to play, cause I'd actually rather it be paid for and know that what I'm buying into doesn't have shitty microtransactions, but I would love it to have a great community just from the gameplay standpoint

Update on the state of the game: It went to the polar opposite of what u are looking at and at present is very unenjoy-able and tedious. Unfortunate as the way it looks here back when we played it in prealpha was WAY more enjoyable. Upvote so more people can get an update.

our team wanted to develop something like this in the coming years, we're actually pleased this idea has been picked up, the game industry is starting to pick up on ideas that need to be looked at for the future, will definitely try this game
Anyone have a spare key? I've been waiting for months after submitting the pre alpha application :( I have no money to afford the mage pack but I've been trying to save up.
let me start this by acknowledging the amount of work that has gone into this game but even tho im not epileptic i genuinely feel as if the devs are trying to induce me into some form of an epileptic shock from the yellow and blue effect that comes around your character when standing in bad areas to simply just the magic ive never really dealth with image issues in games but its literally difficult for me to look at the screen cause some of the effects are painful to look at
It has been done before, in fact it was one of the first games I've ever played 15 years ago. It was just a small german game that did pretty well for being just that, but it never gained any popularity and eventually completely died.
Ever since then I've been wanting a game like that again so so badly. Magicka kinda went the right direction and I loved that game too, but there's way too few games in this direction.
I hope spellbreak is the first of it's kind to gain big popularity and I hope a few years down the line it'll be its own world where the battle royale is just one thing of many you can do.

I was part of the game testing it’s really fun and has its own aspect of combination through different elements and abilities. There’s different ways to play and they each suite different people.
Not going to lie I dont really enjoy Fortnite and think based off of the gameplay and concepts this game seems a lot more unique and enjoyable however I think the idea of mages is a lot more niche than Fortnite since it can appeal to most people
Fortnite is cultural.. at least in it's success. It's not about competing or beating fornite - it's just being able to grab an engaged audience

There was actually a game with a really good magic combat system that looked pretty fun. I had classes and the gameplay was just a free for all deathmatch. For the love of me I can't remember the name of it, but it was shut down so I'm really hoping this one attracts an audience!

What hooked me on Spell Break is actually because I was waiting for a game similar to the Avatar The Last Airbender combat where you fight in real time.
Just by playing Pre Alpha, tho laggy because of region, I want them to get GOTY or be nominated at least.
I also hate Battle Royale games, though I play Cuisine Royale because it was one BRs that was slightly more interesting than the rest.
I love Cuisine Royale due to it feeling actually good aiming and movement wise.

I'm someone who loves almost every genre.. honestly tho battle royales aren't the only very popular genre.. I could see this being played more in the style of overwatch game modes.. because that allows spells that are healing based and objective control based as well as dps spells.. like ice walls or healing auros... but fevir check this out .. imagine if they did 3 man teams but up to like 18 players all fighting over objectives .. it puts a spin on your traditional moba but still allows for team play:)

yes exactly. this is literally the same thing that crossed my mind the second i started playing. the game concept is so good that it should not even limit itself to battle royal modes. but expand and go further. do other pvp modes like capture the flag, free for all, zone capture and even 3v3 and 5v5 arena similar to mmo genre.
the game is good because of its concept, its idea not because its a BR.

Throw in some coop, dungeon crawl, team death match, or any game mode basically anything fits this game quite well

I would argue that Phantom Dust might be one of the more pertinent introductions to MOBA with powers. This looks super fun.

On another note, the pace and feel of the game reminds me more of GunZ: The Duel than Warframe. (I have played hundreds of hours on both)

Being a mage in Black Desert online was quite fun and exciting and the flow of Spellbreak looks rather similar to the flow of battle in BDO. If it is anywhere close to similar I will defiantly check it out.

So after 8 minutes of trying to tell us 'abooout' how this isnt pubg with magic... Pretty sure it's PUBG with magic...
if this game comes out with a custom game option where you can play in a smaller area and just duke it out with friends it would add some versatility to the game which would help attract those of us who have little to no interest in the battle royal style by providing a more personal feeling duel style of combat.

I hope this comes to consoles, if not they are missing out on a huge market and dedicated playerbase. I have a feeling this game is going to take off, I was so hyped when I saw the Wind and Earth elements being used and the idea of combining 2 powers to make 1 HUGE power move is great too. I cant wait to see what comes about this game

I am so glad I found this! I have a huuuge crush on mages, and playing as mages. In every RPG I played I choose mage class (if it was an option). And now, that I can compete against other mages makes me feel extremely happy. Thank you for showing me that game, which I hope is as good as it sounded according to this video.

this looks so amazing. Im not a fan of battle royal games, but ill give this a try and I HOPE that they will make different iterations of spellbreak later on. Maybe an mmorpg, moba, hell, even a story driven offline game i would play the shit out of it :D
It seems it has great potential to me. It’s fast paced, and like Fortnite, the most important thing: the one-on-one close fight is intense .
I'm looking forward to this so much, but there will be a hard meta I can almost garentee it, on top of the fact that there's a class system which will limit the freedom of making your own mage loadout
As a D&D player and Warframe player, I would kill to have this be basically just MageFrame. Raiding dungeons, Caverns, and castles while endless amounts of monsters mob you to kill.
if someone made an MMO with the same kind of movement and abilities in it i would pay so much money for that game. There aren't many(if any) MMOs that have movement like spellbreak and i think that if someone does develop one it could be a HUGE game.
