    Zegras will eventually figure out how often he should be attempting the lacrosse type moves to make him a more effective and dynamic player. His vision and shot are elite and with time he can prove that he is not overrated but most people are accurate in their assertion that he's got a lot of maturing to do in terms of his two way play and on-ice conduct.

      @matthewkabel6246 yes the Ducks collectively seem to be developing better habits in recent weeks. I give Cronin credit and Zegras too of course but I don't think people should take for granted the luxury of having a player like McTavish who can play all the "tough minutes" so to speak

    • @matthewkabel6246
      @matthewkabel6246 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@malinuhhh47 I understand your point completely and think that McTavish has the profile of a future star two way center but the reality is his line has been getting hemmed in A LOT the last few games.
      He’s had some missed assignments and blown coverage on rushes against recently. His defensive play overall this isn’t commensurate with the perception that most have of him as this stout 200 ft player.
      Zegras has constantly gotten bagged on for “piss poor defense” which really only rang true last year (even his rookie year his defensive impact was about average) but again he was on a historically bad team under Eakins where everyone’s defensive numbers were in the gutter.
      This year he’s been very responsible on both sides of the puck but seems to be held to a different standard than McTavish which feels unfair. Sorry for the tangent, wasn’t directed at you, just the prevailing sentiment going around regarding these two players. Both have elite skills in different areas and will be integral pieces of Anaheim’s rebuild nonetheless

      @matthewkabel6246 No need to apologize, I really appreciate your insight and every fan who is paying more close attention. I am a Sharks fan but that doesn't affect my level of appreciation for the execution of the Ducks' rebuilding process. They are in a tough situation trying to decide what role Gibson plays in the rebuild but that contract aside many parts of their youth have the type of ceiling that you hope to have in franchise building blocks and though I don't know him particularly well I like much of what I've seen from Cronin in terms of his communication style and composure on the bench, that type of demeanor is helpful for managing the floor of young players. I hope the group continues to push in the right direction and finds themselves back in contention soon because the league is in better shape when the California trip is a nightmare for visiting teams 👍

    • @matthewkabel6246
      @matthewkabel6246 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@malinuhhh47 Cronin definitely has the team bought in for sure, and though there are still stinkers every now and again (like vs Edmonton last night) the product on the ice most of the season has been night and day better than the last few seasons. Many more 50/50 pucks being won, protecting the slot/netfront areas a lot more, etc.
      Just super unfortunate Z and Drysdale missed so much time (100% because they played too soon after each missing camp as a result of their prolonged contract negotiations), and right when they return, Leo goes down. McTavish has also missed about 7-8 games and Terry just went down to injury against Arizona. Hard to develop any cohesion when the young studs have been in and out of the lineup the entire year and must be especially frustrating for Cronin.
      Completely agree with your last sentence, league was so much better when road teams dreaded the California trips. I think the Sharks are building a solid nucleus of young talent, Smith Eklund and Bordeleau are all sick. And a real chance for you guys to add another stud this draft!

  • @dylanjohnson505

    I am a ducks fan so bias is involved
    This is such an interesting time for this video. Z played like 10 games this year before being sidelined with some sort of nagging injury. He hasn’t really been talked about recently because he isn’t playing!
    When he did play, he was coming off the contract “dispute”/negotiations and missed training camp and preseason. That mixed with his apparent injury and most ducks fans noticed during those 10 games that Z looked a bit off.
    Another interesting factor is the change in coach. Dallas Eakins was a players coach with little structure and didn’t seem to have much of a leash on guys. Gregg Cronin has come in and has simplified the ducks game to (for lack of better words) a more Meat and Potatoes style. I feel this is why we are seeing guys like Mason McTavish and Frank Vatrano do well, and a guy like Troy Terry struggle a bit.
    Zegras looks to be coming back (perhaps for just before Christmas break). Hopefully he can slightly modify his game to be less “flashy” and more rounded and can continue to develop his reputation around the league and its fanbase.
    Ps. Sidney Crosby was once viewed similarly as Zegras- as blasphemous as that is, perhaps Z and alter his perception like Crosby generally has.

    • @punisher5598
      @punisher5598 Před 5 měsíci

      New fan of hockey here, why would you want to take away some of more flashy plays?
      I think it’s true in all sports you want players to be good at fundamentals, but I always thought showmanship in sports was good. Like tonight I saw a Michigan goal? I get saying you can’t do that all the time, but if he can do it, why would you take that away?

    • @dylanjohnson505
      @dylanjohnson505 Před 5 měsíci

      @@punisher5598 although I mentioned to be “less flashy” , I wasn’t saying to not do it at all. As a ducks fan, I feel Zegras gets somewhat unjustly looked as just a flashy guy. I think it’s understandable as to why he gets viewed this way. As a fan of the team I watch a lot of Z. A Toronto fan possibly sees 2 games of him. So when they see only the highlights and some of the antics he pulls (outlined in the video), Z’s reputation is more then understandable. Perhaps a few highlights of Z playing a slightly more complete game and this perception changes a bit.
      Other the the Crosby comparison I made, Matthew Tkachuk is an example of a widely changed reputation. He went from a cocky agitator (with his constant between the legs attempts) to being generally a well respected star of the game. It seems like he’s matured a bit and I think it’s noticeable to how he plays now.
      In my opinion, a guy like Z and Jack Hughes are good for the game. But it’s clear one is a far better player then the other in lots of aspects and hopefully in the not so distant future it isn’t clear or far at all.

    • @punisher5598
      @punisher5598 Před 5 měsíci

      @@dylanjohnson505 ahh gotcha. I’m literally brand new to all this and have the ducks as my team, partly because Zegras was fun on the highlight reel. I had no clue at the time he was a somewhat controversial player. Last night was only my 4th game of NHL hockey to watch (seen some local games but they were a feeder team), and seeing the Michigan goal was one of the coolest sports moments I’ve seen.
      For the Crosby hit, why is it considered not in good form to take a shot after the buzzer? I’m guessing it’s like don’t put the puck in the air to hurt someone defenseless if you don’t have to? Like last night down 3-2 Z had a chance to do it again with 1.1 seconds left but didn’t. I guess I’m wondering if there is a logic behind the unofficial rule or if it’s more of s “respect the game” sort of deal.

    • @dylanjohnson505
      @dylanjohnson505 Před 5 měsíci

      @@punisher5598 1 thing I’ve learned watching hockey and I assume it goes for other sports: every star is controversial. There will always be a vocal minority of fans that end up seeming louder then the all the other with their “opinions”. Zegras here is kinda a case of that. He’s young and a easy target. If I had to guesstimate, it may only be 10% of fans that dislike Zegras and create this “controversy”
      As for the question about the shot after whistle, generally speaking it’s viewed as extremely disrespectful to shoot a puck at the goalie/ net after a whistle (within reason of time). That moment against Pitt was way beyond the whistle and the pens had a legit gripe in my opinion. Last night, with 1.1 secs outside the blue line is likely impossible to win a face off and get a shot towards the net. If the face off was in the Seattle zone, it’s a completely different play.

    The reason Torts says he's bad for the game (which I tend to agree with) is because his play is going to have young guys trying to do all these unnecessary fancy moves and prioritizing how they look rather than putting the puck in the net. The lost goals from failed attempts when the only goal of a player and team should be to win will really affect the competitive dynamic of the game. That goal where Zegras flipped the puck over the net for the bat in is a perfect example; he could've made a simple pass to the wide-open Sonny Milano for a simple tap in, yet he took huge risk for nothing.

    • @matthewkabel6246
      @matthewkabel6246 Před 5 měsíci +3

      This is a very confusing comment. Zegras isn’t a hot dogger that does these fancy moves without a purpose, he does them because they’re more often than not the high percentage play, and he’s able to execute. He has an elite understanding in real time of the space and options available to him, so he’s able to improvise on the fly in creative/unconventional ways. But they lead to goals/high quality chances, he picks his spots and never forces the issue.

  • @BobbyT.
    @BobbyT. Před 4 měsíci

    I think part of why he is so hated is because he was everywhere for a while the NHL really latched onto marketing him as a super star when he hasn’t been on that level. He has obviously shown that he is very good but not on the same level as the top dogs in the league, but the NHL has almost given him red carpet treatment like a McDavid, Matthews, or Crosby and I think that’s where a lot of the hate has come from. People don’t want to have a single nhl player shoved in their faces at every moment. Even Bedard who’s already seems to be in that generational status has gotten some hate because of how frequently he has been seen marketed by the NHL.

But at the end of the day, Zegras has a fun personality, a good sense of humour and a ton of skill. Whining, to me, isn’t his issue. Back checking, on the other hand… that would get under my skin. I hate to be a petty ass at this point, but it annoys me that more people don't see this. At 5:43 he's got something sticky on the blade for this trick... not quite as impressive as it originally looks. You can tell because around 5:45, his stick comes to a stop mid-air, and gravity would normally pull the puck off the stick at that point since there's no centrifugal force from the circular stick movement countering it at that point. Yet it just stacks stuck on the blade like magic.
    Anyway, it's not important: he's a great player. Hope he recovers and gets back out there soon.
