  • Last year I set out to do 22 Hard Things in 2022. After regaining over 100 pounds after extreme weight loss a decade ago, the isolation of the pandemic, and a new wave of grief from the loss of my mother in my teen years, I found myself trapped in a cycle of self-loathing that had me living in a really dark place. I believed the lies depression told me, that I was not capable of the life I wanted to lead. I set out to feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally. What transpired is a journey I'll never forget. This year I'm making a list of #23HardThingsin2023 to continue my fight against #depression and to remember what I'm capable of. I hope you'll join me with your own list, whether it's one, 23, or anything in between. You are strong, capable, and worthy.

Recently found you, and you are so inspiring to me. I had been on a two year weight loss journey where I lost 100 lbs. When Covid hit the depression and hard times threw me a curve ball. I didn’t handle it well and gained it all back. I have been thinking about my 23 things. I don’t know if I have chosen the best things to put on my list, but we will see as the year goes on. A lot on my list are things pertaining to getting out of debt, renovating parts of our 70 year old house we just bought, and learning. Here is my 23 hard things list:
    1. Pay off credit card #1
    2. Pay off credit card #2
    3. Pay off credit line
    4. Rebuild and organize closet
    5. Finish bathroom renovation
    6. Landscape parking strip
    7. Landscape by house with flowers and trees
    8. Save money to pave the driveway
    9. Landscape other side of driveway
    10. Take the kids to the beach
    11. Finish December Daily memory keeping project
    12. Teach summer school
    13. Start food photography course
    14. Learn a new song on the piano
    15. Decide if I want to stay in my marriage
    16. Spend 1000 hours outside
    17. Take my littles with me to church every week
    18. 1 second a day project
    19. Out of the box Date night once a month
    20. Learn to shoot professional family videos
    21. Leave my phone on the nightstand more
    22. Move my body 4 days a week
    23. Undecided

I am not sure if "Be an inspiration to others" was on either your 2022 or 2023 list, but if not, it should be. I have felt more motivated to do things, hard things, since finding you and your channel. I have made my list that includes several physical challenges -- hiking, biking, etc., some craft goals - I want to make myself an entire outfit (sewing & knitting), things to challenge my mind like reading, taking on-line courses, finding new recipes, and the big one is to choose something that I have not succeeded at in the past and try again. I'm excited to get working on my list! Thank you so much for your openness and willingness to talk about your journey.

Katie, by no means do I want to pressure you, but you have no idea how far you have reached out to people. I lost my only sibling 12/20/21 and I went to a dark place. Sadness, depression and just blah. I had lost over 75 lbs a few years before and gained it all back and couldn’t care at all. But you are one of the reasons I am trying again so thank you. BLESS you. Keep being strong and know you have touched even one person. ❤

Katie, thank you so much for being such an inspiration. I've been following you for several months, and I decided to follow your lead in making a list for this year. My list is only 10 items so far, but, here goes: 1. Work on eliminating negative thoughts, 2. Less time on social media and more time reading, 3. Get back up on a horse/ riding lessons (been about 30 years!), 4. Spend more time with my parents (they are in their 80's), 5. Take my autistic adult son fishing or birdwatching at least once a month, 6. Start exercising with my young adult daughter to help her build muscle mass ( she's a small framed person), 7. Find relief for my sciatica. 8. Start getting massages, self-care. 9. Make a brand new recipe at leat twice a month, 10. Go on a trip with my husband. I look forward to accomplishing these this year. Thank you for your inspiration, and I'll keep you posted!

I don't have 23 things but I broke my ankle pretty badly last year hiking while training for my first half marathon. A lot of people told me I wouldn't be able to run or hike the same again. So this year my goals are
-Run a 5k, 10k, half marathon and hill race
-Hike 10 munros (mountains in Scotland)
    - Compete the 20+ mile Kiltwalk with my mum to raise money for the Mountain rescue team who did amazing work on the scene to make my recovery as smooth as it's been

I found your story on TikTok and it has really inspired me to think about my list. As I have been coming up with things, I’m trying to not put the end goal, like lose weight, but instead, ways and things that my weight has held me back from and things that will help to get to the end goal. Having your story past and continuing is really a game changer and I love following it. You are doing so good! Thanks for sharing! Some things on my list… run a 5K, go on a real hike in July when I am in the mountains, take a kick boxing class or self defense for an entire session, conquer the dentist, find a school and finish my bachelors.

I found you on IG when I searched about running.. I have been on a five year journey to improve my health and navigate the challenges of menopause. Turning 60 this past September really took an emotional toll on me. I have never been a runner but my husband and children were. I set a goal to run a 5 km race sometime in 2023. It is extremely scary for me. I have always been a fearful woman but hormonal menopause has exasperated this emotion. Thanks to you I am setting 23 goals for this year. l love your beautiful smile and personality. I look forward to following you through your journey. Hugs from Ontario 🇨🇦

I want to start journaling (one on my list) and finding that challenging for some reason how to start. My intention for journaling, my why, is to help me navigate feelings of anxiety and feelings of depression. Gratitude will be a part of that and I think I'm pretty mindful of this every day already. I look forward to the journeys here together😊

So inspiring. I’ve had a hard time with my depression and Covid the last couple of years. Add to that the remote work and social isolation, and I’ve really spiraled. I found your posts so inspiring so I’m attempting hard things too. My first hard thing is to take my pills every day. That is so important for my health but sometimes the depression gets in the way. My second hard thing is either going to be 10 minutes of intentional daily movement or getting into the office 3 days a week. Both are VERY hard things for me so it’s been a bit of a struggle. Trying to learn how to have a hard thing but not beat myself up if I don’t do it. I tend toward “all or nothing” thinking. Would love to learn how you set a goal and be kind to yourself about it.

I struggle with all or nothing thinking, too, so you are not alone. I've been thinking about this a lot and trying to challenge it in myself, too. One thing that has helped me is to keep practicing those few activities that kind of halt all or nothing thinking for me and my self-criticizing. For me, I have like one thing that does that and it is free writing poetry. Another thing: when I go to try strength train with my brother, he coaches me, which takes out the element of me thinking about anything and that helps me feel more exploratory. These are really fleeting for me right now and I have to try to do them (and I am not successful all the time). Is there anything that you like to do just because? However small that might be, anything that you do (even mundane things like washing dishes), that you don't think hard about or are critical? If there isn't any you can think of, don't despair (I don't always have stuff and it changes for me), but I did try to start to ask myself what I like to do that I don't think much about and that helped me a little to notice what does work for me and kind of break that pattern up a little. Doesn't totally fix it, but it's a step. I'm not sure if this will be helpful but I really related to your post. If nothing in what I say speaks to you, leave it because you will find your way and know best what will work for you, even if you haven't found it yet...

LOVE THIS! I’ve made my list of 23 hard things and am excited to challenge myself along w you! Tip w Paddleboarding - this sounds counterintuitive, but it’s actually easier on a river vs. pond/lake. Large bodies of water have waves/currents from all directions. A slow moving river or stream helps stabilize the board (kind of like a treadmill) in one direction. And I think I went at least 3 times before I even tried to stand up, it’s intimidating! Good luck! I am coming out of some very hard financial years. One of my "hard things" is to have at least $2023 in a savings account by the end of the year. Oh, and I also want to learn to properly use chopsticks!

I made my list a couple of days ago after finding your Instagram account; the past few years have been tough. Seems like I am just barely existing, but I'm starting to get to a point where I feel like I just might deserve better than that. I'd love to be able to share my list with you/others! I posted it on my Instagram, but I might upload it to my CZcams as well. 😊

@@KatieZornes Thank you for responding to my post - that means a lot 😊 I'm trying - some days are tougher than others, but to me, all that matters is that I keep going and keep trying.
