Ah, exactly! That's what many people actually said when analyzing Unseen World. Miku's "fake vocals," as Saiki called them, is not a regular "backing vocals" we are used to hear in rock music, it's rather like a "hype man" in rap. Something completely off the main melody, but adding some extra harmony to the overall mix.
Puppies are only a problem when they chew on mic cables. They have a few songs I don't enjoy as much as others, but in all honesty, I almost never skip a Band-Maid song on my playlists. Seriously almost every single song by the Ladies, including the songs they didn't write/arrange are good.
A song from Band-Maid I don't really care for......ummmmm, nope. In fact, it doesn't matter how many times I've listened to a Band-Maid song, I never get tired of it. Don't let people discourage you from listening to their song called "The Dragon Cries." American record producer Tony Visconti, who has produced music for T-Rex and David Bowie, helped produce "The Dragon Cries" and it is probably their darkest song when it comes to the lyrics and music video. IMO, it is one of their best hard rock songs that punches you in the face but your ears will love every second of it and the video will leave you in shock from the disturbing images which tells a bleak story of what is happening to our planet. My guess is that fans don't like it because of it's dark tone and imagery which is not the norm for Band-Maid songs but I think they should throw in this type of song in every album because lets face it, It KICKS ASS!
It's a very deep song. It was released on November 20, 2019, as part of their upcoming CONQUEROR album, together with Rinne (MV for Rinne was released at about the same time, I think). I personally was shaken and stirred by it to the depth of my soul. Musically, I saw a lot of influences there, mostly from Black Sabbath (and the message is very much akin to War Pigs), but also from Deep Purple. Kanami's solo immediately brings to mind Ritchie Blackmore's guitar from Lazy, at least for me. I know that the band members themselves said that Tony-san has "shaved off" a lot of extra layers from their music, saying that sometimes "the simpler the better," but I personally never felt that this song sounds too simplistic for BAND-MAID. Yes, it sounds a little bit different, but that's rather an overall feel to me, not something particular I would notice. The Dragon Cries seems to be one of their deepest songs, actually, because, with that music video up on CZcams. After watching this MV many times, I actually realised the symbolism. The child on the stairs is probably the Goddess Benzaiten: serpentsanctum.com/benzaiten-white-snake-goddess-of-japan/ +++++++++++++ Benzaiten is a Japanese water goddess of fertility and flow-of rivers and waters, language and poetry, music, dance, and abundant wealth and good fortune. Benzaiten is the only female figure within “The Seven Lucky Gods” (known as the Shichi Fukujin) of Japanese Shintōism, and most often appears with a white snake as her headdress. Dragons and serpents are her messengers and avatars, and she herself can appear as a white snake. Benzaiten is one of Japan’s most widely venerated deities. In Shintō, snakes are considered as a minor type of Dragon and share many of the mythological traits of that creature. As in Chinese mythology, Japanese dragons are associated with water (especially rivers) and although they are powerful and potentially frightening, Chinese and Japanese traditions honour them as benevolent, just, and wise. Dragons and snakes are the bearers and guardians of the sacred wish-granting jewel that represents enlightenment and sacred wisdom and snakes are understood to be Dragons’ messengers in the world of humans. Thanks to their ability to continually shed their skin and be reborn, these serpents are known as shapeshifters in Japanese mythology and can live to be thousands of years old, able to walk between the underworld, heaven, and the human world. Shintō priests and practitioners will always try to avoid harming a snake if they come across such an animal in daily life-in fact, encountering a live snake is considered an extremely lucky omen, while encountering a dead one is considered a sign of misfortunes to come. +++++++++++++ This cultural fact brings us to a clear realisation that whoever wrote the lyrics in English (it's officially Thomas Kenny, I saw him in New York after the concert at Irving Plaza), was actually just translating what Miku wrote. You may recall the famous anime Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. There's an episode there, where a river god comes to the bath, ugly and contaminated and disgusting and oozing dirt. Initially, they think it's a god of garbage dumps or something, but after they clean and wash him, it turns out he's actually a pure and holy River God. So, this sort of imagery is not new for the Japanese. Miku just picked up a very familiar theme from her own national lore and turned it into a great message for the world they've just conquered. The song ends with a positive message, they hope that the world will recover, people will get wiser, the Dragon will not cry anymore, and the Phoenix will fly again. It seems God was really tired of us being so idiotic, and killing the environment, endangering the future of our children and grandchildren. Nobody wants to yield even a little of their personal comfort, and when scientists say, stop burning so much fuel, the Earth is suffering, these idiots say it's all fake news. And then God says, OK, you did not want to act like intelligent beings, I will force you to decrease the CO2 emissions the hard way, I need the Earth to stay habitable. With this COVID-19 pandemic, the CO2 emissions have fallen by some 25% and more. BAND-MAID was really prophetic with that MV. Unfortunately, now CO2 emissions are back to the old figures, and even higher. The story is not over yet...
I first discovered Band-Maid in 2015. I've been to several of their concerts. I own physical copies of pretty much every song they have released on CD, as well as their Blu-rays. I can honestly say that I enjoy every song they have released in their career together as a band. They're that good.
I've heard this song a hundred times, but damn, when I watched this performance now, I was shocked (again) how amazing is Kanami's composition, and what virtuosos they are to implement this composition in reality...
Their song "Start Over" czcams.com/video/iL5sRrSECQ0/video.html is rather divisive. It is a really Poppy/Jazzy number by Band-Maid standards. Kanami (Lead guitarist and head songwriter - and at the time of Start Over was "the" songwriter) had writers block, so the other girls tried to help Kanami , with Saiki (Singer) leading the group. The end result isn't bad, but the ladies haven't returned to that style/sound. If you have ever wondered where Band-Maids' Pop-sensibility comes from..... it comes from both Saiki and Miku (Rhythm guitarist/2nd singer). Kanami is playing piano in this song.
For a Band Maid song I don't like so much, I was going to pick a random song off their debut album which is more pop than rock I think. So I was going to say "Big Dad", but then I searched for it on CZcams and came across a Miku solo version from a Covid era live stream that was so adorable that now I think I like the song, lol. I think every song of theirs has a little something I like about it really.
Exactly the same for me. I remember I was once on a long flight and I was listening to the whole BAND-MAID discography in a loop. It was before Unseen World was released, so, it was shorter. And then I thought, "Oh, EverGreen [from MAID in JAPAN] is really not such a good song!" But when later I shared my "discovery" on Reddit, two dozen people said they freaking love it 😂 And then I went back and relistened it, and yes, it's an amazing song. Why did I think it was not good? I don't know. So, yes, my favourite BAND-MAID song is the one currently playing. No exceptions.
OK, here's my story about why I love BAND-MAID. Music is important to me. It’s a drug substitute. And now you wonder, “Is this guy saying the drugs are important?” 😊 I remember when I turned 17 and began my university studies, for some reason I started to think about the meaning of life. Naturally, since everyone around me was using drugs, I thought it was a good tool to discover what was happening in my own brain, and hopefully, it would widen my understanding. I knew that drugs were very dangerous. I was a chemist, after all. For this reason, I never used heavy drugs, only light ones, at the same level of effects as alcohol. Not the alcohol itself, that drug is pretty useless, but other “hallucination-type” things. It was a deadly poison applied to cure a deadly disease. But I also liked music. And a lot of music I liked, from the early 70s, was created by drug users. And they often mention that music can be a drug substitute. Jim Morrison from The Doors said, “Music is my only friend, until the end.” He himself failed to exercise sufficient self-discipline in this regard, but I was more lucky. Probably because I'm much less talented. So, I stopped using drugs and started using music for that purpose. The problem is that if music is used as a drug substitute, it must be great music. For me, Metallica was the last band which could perform this function. And then it all ended, after 2008 and Death Magnetic, nobody was doing the music at the same level. I may mention only another Japanese band, Bleach, which they later renamed as Bleach03. But by the time I discovered them, alas, they already disbanded. And in 2018 I discovered BAND-MAID. And they are now my drug substitute. Also, ASTERISM, but to a lesser degree. For other people, it’s other bands, I know. But for me, it is what it is. That’s why I say that BAND-MAID saved my life. Deep cut. Not much attention and it’s still a rocker. “Dragon Cries” is almost universally panned by Maidiacs, although the Maids still brought their charisma and some good musical elements into it. But as a whole? It’s not great. Band Maid has such tremendous variety that the most common thing is the songs some fans don’t like, other fans love, and vice versa. Some of their earliest material (given to them by the label) sounds a lot like the background “rock song” you may have heard on a Nickelodeon show. But once the Maids found their rhythm and wrote their own songs, they were off to the races. “Wonderland” is one of Saiki’s most beautiful tracks. And “Play” would be one of the most fun. Take your pick. I’ll wait for the 🔔 😊 Edit: As we see from the comments to my post, it seems “Dragon Cries” was a song from the other category I described, where some love and others don’t. Double edged sword of the Maids’ fearless creativity
"The Dragon Cries" is far from "almost universally panned by maidiacs." Those who don't like it (apparently because they used an outside producer, the legendary Tony Visconti) are very vocal about not liking it. It's a mistake to think they represent the vast majority of fans.
For the record: I considerThe Dragon Cries one of their greatest creations. I realized it much later, after making three (three!) reaction videos, analyzing this song musically, lyrically, and then philosophically. And then Wave Potter dissected it into separate instrument tracks, and the Drum&Bass section of it became one of my favorite instrumentals from BAND-MAID. And then I watched a reaction from Rock Candy recently, and I started to appreciate this song even more. I truly consider The Dragon Cries a masterpiece. The studio version of it suffers from the general problems with the sound mastering which CONQUEROR album has. All songs there sound like through a mattress. The terrible dynamic compression does not help either. So, I rarely listen to the studio versions of CONQUEROR songs, I prefer the live versions, mostly from their ONLINE OKYUJIs. The Dragon Cries was excellently performed in Line Cube Shibuya as well.
The backup vocalist is Kobato Miku where 小鳩 (Kobato) translates 小 "small" and 鳩 "pigeon". She is a remarkable woman.

I’ll wait for the 🔔 😊
Edit: As we see from the comments to my post, it seems “Dragon Cries” was a song from the other category I described, where some love and others don’t.
Almost everyone I have spoken to loves the song. It's not universally panned at all.
