About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,000+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I watched Close Encounters every time it aired on tv. I do remember watching the this and the 1981 airings. It was a great treat!

Pre-Cinemax, HBO and Showtiime. Expanded cable was still pretty rare beyond 15 or so channels. No USA network, TNT or anything else. One of the three major networks airing a theatrical movie was second only to seeing the movie in theaters.

Loved watching movies during that era. No Internet to leak spoilers and ruin the fun.

Is this the special version that was only shown on ABC? It's 143 minutes long and includes the extra scenes that Spielberg made for "The Special Edition".

This was on the VHS of CE3K I grew up with, completely burned into my brain. When I was a youngin I thought it was part of the movie.

I remember that movie scared me so badly. Especially when the little boy got taken away. The mother picked up the phone to call the police and it was playing those creepy 5 tones in her ear. I don’t think I picked up the phone in my house for a month

That and the scene with Richard Dreyfus in his truck creeped me out, too. I thought Close Encounters of the Third Kind was the most intense movie I saw in the theater as a kid. It scared me, but I loved it at the same time.

From IMDB... "An ABC television version aired that ran 143 minutes. It incorporated all the scenes from the O.V. as well as all the new scenes from the S.E. This version has never been released to video."

I remember this telecast. It was sometime in March, 1983, right? This was ABC's second airing Spielberg's Classic.

Here's the opening to the first airing of "CEOT3K" on "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" on November 15, 1981:

On that video, one of the commenters, "ruarc2077," notes that you can see HIS hand at the end of the tunnel! You just need to keep your eye near the center of the right half of the video, and it will flash by in the open gap of the "c", which is in this clip at about the 0:29 or 0:30 mark and in the linked clip at about 0:27 or 0:28.

Do you have any WLS late night movie opens from the early to mid 90s?

Ah, the lousy 1980 "Special Edition," and the notorious 5 commercial breaks during the third act! Ah, I remember it well!

Did these movies go right to commercial break?
