Why am I obsessed with watching people experiencing things I love for the first time? Love your reactions! Very good breakdowns and your enjoyment is contagious. Keep it up!
Thanks! Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos :)
Yes, one scream. Source: He's done it in live shows
That part of The Grudge is awesome!
He really did do it live. But that was back in early 2000s. Now he only does half of it. Age catches up to all of us
@@losdog13 just watched him do it tonight
I wish I could listen to Tool for the first time again
I don't, the first time I heard it was my girlfriend telling me that "schism" felt like our relationship 🤣
But every time feels like the first
Look up "The Holy Gift." It's the Lateralus album in the correct order according to the Fibonacci Sequence...because math. It'll put a whole new perspective on things.
The only thing better than listening to tool for the first time is listening to tool on acid for the first time
Exactly! I can't wait for alzheimers!
Gotta be the first time I've ever heard anyone describe "The Grudge" as a simplistic track LOL.
By simplistic I meant that the instrumentals sounded minimalistic, but the way they layered and built them up is really impressive!
@@mollyesanborn the time signature and meter changes are astounding as well
Lol I know right
“Minimalistic” maybe
Kinds bugged me her calling the music minimalistic. By far... it's not.
Fun fact: about the track "Mantra": The sound for this unusual short instrumental was created by Tool lead singer Maynard James Keenan's cat, at least according to Keenan. The sound is actually Maynard's cat being squeezed and the resulting sound slowed down to create the low-pitched noise. He says it was a gentle squeeze - no animals were harmed in the making of "Mantra."
Greetings from Paraguay
That's so interesting, never would have guessed that was a cat. Thanks for sharing, and happy belated birthday :)
this album is a legitimate masterpiece
Loved your reaction! When anyone says minimalistic or simplistic about Tool I believe it is such a compliment. They manage to make such complex arrangements flow so well.
YES, THIS!!! Seems like some people have misinterpreted my compliment of calling their music minimalistic as a criticism. I love how their sound is so layered, it creates great music!
@@mollyesanborn They are prog rock. And I hate prog if it's pretentious. But they managed to take weird and complicated offbeat prog elements that normally turn people off and make them sound simple, almost primal. There's something that speaks to your animalistic side, and yet they provoke deep thoughts and strange, inexplicable emotions too. Tool is an almost spiritual experience. You don't even notice the bizarre time signatures and near impossible rhythmic elements, or the dissonance, nor the way the bass plays leads while the guitar takes the place of bass, while the drums are almost disconnected at times. You don't notice because it's hypnotic and has a groove even though nobody can follow that groove.
Truly an incredible band. They don't do weird prog stuff for the sake of it, or to show off, they do it to serve the music, to enhance the experience. And they do it with subtlety.
When she says it sounds "simplistic or minimalistic", i think she means sometimes their tracks start out with only an instrument or 2 then slowly builds up.
Yep, you're spot on.
Great, I'm so glad you started the Tool. It's an amazing band and one of my 10 top bands. I'd like to recommend Porcupine Tree. The albums In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet are masterpieces from start to finish. Thank you for your videos. Greetings from the Czech republic.
Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching! :)
Tool is such a deep band the more your learn about them and understand their lyrics and the polyrhythmic complexity\odd timing the more you fall in love it’s like a spiritual experience once you fully dive in.
Schism has been my ringtone for years. The details are phenomenal, nothing un needed or unwanted. They don't have a bad song. Great reaction ma'am
Yes, Schism is fantastic! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed :D
Eulogy is my ring tone! 😂
Loved your review. Tool is my favorite band ever. Was so cool seeing you make the connection between Parabol and Parabola. I’ve always thought of those as just a single track, I always play them together.
The girl with the prettiest voice ❤️
So happy you got to do this album, in my top 3 for sure, with The Fragile by NIN.
I'm already excited to go back and re-listen to it! Lateralus definitely seems like an album you have to revisit and dig deep into, very similar to The Fragile.
@@mollyesanborn absolutely!
The Fragile is an exponential grower over time.
You need to go back with lyrics, on your own.
The music, plus the lyrics, masterpiece.
I think what you are doing here is so real, so awesome. It brings me back to the first time I listened to TOOL. Keep it up!
Thank you, that makes me really happy to hear! :)
Now go listen to Passenger again! Yes from the White Pony, best collaboration ever! Chino & Maynard are vocal Gods
The more you listen to this album, the more it becomes part of you. One of the best albums of all time.
They have 5 albums in the top 10 in the history of ....ever.
That whole album is a sonic journey from start to finish. Glad you enjoyed the journey it took you on.
I remember being 20 when Schism first dropped. ANEMA and Lateralus will always defining albums of my youth. I always thought of the album as 'Communication' and evolving to be able to communicate. Growth past the petty arguments we have. As a 20 year old this album really put my head in a good place. (Please excuse me, I could talk Tool all day lol)
The Grudge:
"Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity. Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive.
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down."
The Patient:
"Gonna wait it out. Be patient
If there were no rewards to reap
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here
I certainly would've walked away"
Schism:
"There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.
Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed lovers.
Between supposed brothers.
Here at Parabola we start to see ascending I think.. After A Grudge, Patience, A Schism..
Parabol/bola
"Twirling 'round with this familiar parable
Spinning, weaving 'round each new experience
Recognize this as a holy gift and
Celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing
A chance to be alive and breathing"
Ticks and Leeches.. this is Maynard middle finger to the Lawyers and Record Execs. This is a mid-record track like "Hooker with a Penis" which was Anemas mid-album LOUD ANGRY song.
When you get to Anema you'll see it. Hooker with a Penis is a middle finger to fans who said they sold out and, to me, slightly similar.
We once again return to Maynard ascending and finding peace and spiritual healing. No more of peoples bullshit, he's gonna live... ride the spiral. No more seeing black and white like a child, but life in color.
Lateralus:
"Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come."
And we end it looking back. Maynard giving some tips and what you need to do, what he did, to heal. My absolute favorite song now, many years later..
Reflection...
"So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable
Just let the light touch you
And let the words spill through
And let them pass right through
Bringing out our hope and reason"
Breath taking album.
I suggest Anema/Lateralus as a whole.
Undertow is grimy, rough..early 90's with lyrics Maynard wrote in his early 20's.
Anema is Lateralus... ANGRY!..but beautiful.
Lateralus is the healing from Anema.
10k Days and Fear Innocuous are great. But won't hit as hard. 10k Days/Fear is mature and has no specific message like Anema/Lateralus. Anema/Lateralus are built as one, 10k Days and Fear are an album of a man 40+ years old who ain't really got any problems, owns a vineyard, 3 bands, but can sing his ass off and has 3 top musicians.
Anema/Lateralus follow the same formula. You'll see how things like Ticks match the feeling of Hooker...or Reflection is the massive long, progressive, closer like Third Eye with an ending message.
Awesome comment, loved reading your thoughts on Tool! :)
10k Days does have a similar formula and an overall theme. It's literally about the many years of pain his mother went through before she died, and the Christian faith that got her through it, even though he himself rejected it, and the conflict that created within him. It also touches on his overall misanthropic feelings, his disgust at human behaviour ect. I think the weird ending track is a thing they carried through. It has some absolutely epic tracks on it, and incredible production.
Their lsst album did nothing for me, but 10k Days is an incredible album rejected by many hard-core fans. It's Tools Black Album, it was polished, well written, creative, a band at their peak, but too commercial for the old school fans, just like with Metallica. But it was a massive success nonetheless.
But come on, Rosetta Stoned has to be one of the most mesmerising and intriguing tracks ever made, and leaves you wondering whether the whole Tool project was actually an elaborate troll that got out of hand. Absolutely epic piece of work either way. And The Pot is an absolutely monstrous track. And what about the beauty of the Wing's/10,000 Days thing together? There's nothing like those tracks.
The material isn't as dense and complex, and has more of a focus on production, but man is that album a mesmerising piece of work. But I love all the albums except the latest.
Got me in the feels with this one, I would have recommended this band, but I didn't know for sure what your threshold is musically. I am excited for you to do the rest of the albums!!! Definitely going to recommend a perfect circle now that you have opened up the door. Tool is a GREAT BAND, seen them live once and it was amazing! It just so happened to be the lateralus tour, so definitely some great memories. Can not wait for the rest of the reaction videos for these guys!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! That's awesome that you got to see them live.
Lateralus and aenima go toe to toe for me. Fear inoculum is their master piece since those albums came out. I'd have to say 10000 days is my least favorite cause I hear re hash of notes in prior records which really threw me off for being tool. Normally they are different album to album but days was just similar to what they done before. Props for using the word groovy!!!
That was fun! TOOL forever! 🖤🤘🏾
💪🏻😎yesss This is the rabbit hole every one warned you about, and you’ll love it
Haha! I look forward to falling down the rabbit hole...
Now you need to listen to it all together uninterrupted. :)
Excited to see you dive into Tool.
If you really never heard Tool, starting with Lateralus is a bit rough imo. It's like going to master class before undergrad. You can do it, but you miss the evolution which i feel is a bit stiffer than the evolution Deftones goes through where I feel like starting out of order is fine.
yeah, I can kind of see that. After having listened to Lateralus I am curious to hear their two albums that were released before it.
I started at their second album
First song I heard by them was Vicarious off their 3rd album lmao but now my favorite album is Lateralus
Interludes and TOOL: pretty much any time there's an interlude, there's an easter egg to find. On Ænima, the interludes can be arranged and overlayed on Forty-Six and 2 for an enhanced song experience. The same can be done with the album after Lateralus, 10,000 Days. On this album there are alternate track orders that completely rearrange the interludes based in numerology. The latest album has some conspicuous durations that suggest a hidden track but to date, I'm not aware that one has been discovered.
Tool has said the intended order is the track list and there’s no overlays secret songs or alternate orders. Sayin It’s released as is or they’d have put it there that way and it’s over thinking
Im here for this TOOL journey 🤘🤘🤘 Good golly, Miss Molly…get ready for the albums that followed this 😁😁😁
I'm excited to hear them!
Just recently got into Tool. My songs at the moment are Sober, The Pot and Enema. Your videos are always great 😊
Oh man their music really grows on you, doesn't it? The more I listen to it the more I really start to appreciate the nuances of what they do with their sound.
Maynard from Tool and Mike Patton from Faith No More, id consider them two the vocal gods of the Alternative music scene. so many different styles they incorporate into their vocal styles, its really impressive to me.
Maynard is a god 4 sure Patton maybe Legend
I prefer Cedric Bixler Zavala from TMV over Patton.
Finally some one has to say it. TRENT as well. His voice is up there.
I would add Dir en Gray's Kyo with them.
Agreed
Yes u need 2 know the songs are kinds joined songs example
Track 1 is singular
Track 2-3 joined
Track 4-5 joined
Track 6-7 joined
Track 8 singular
Track 9 singular
Tracks 10-11-12 triple
Track 13 trippy interlude
You missed the fettuccine sequence 💀
Sequins...Sequins!
Good, the alfredo sauce is a bit distracting imo
Nobody's gonna catch that the first time unless they're a Chefematician.
I personally prefer Fusilli James
I would be curious on your reaction to Mother Love Bone’s Apple album. Love your channel, keep up the great videos!
Aaaa THE best album in music period… I remember the first time I listened to it I only like Parabola and Ticks & Leeches.
Of course I grew to love it all with all my heart track by track. I also practice Yoga to this album. Amazing ❤️
I just loved on every track was so cool. Tool Army is growing
This album is amazing, but I like Aenima more just by a hair
Can't wait to hear it!
Welcome to the world of tool. We look forward to your next vid.
I've got an Aenima reaction coming your way soon ;)
This is such a powerful album!
Yes, I agree!
Schism always felt like Tool's version of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. In that it's long, repetitive, seemingly simple, but layered, complex and progressive. It's easily consumed by the masses but still gives us metal heads something to drool over.
I remember one of my bands I was in at the time this album was released, covered the Grudge at a house party. The whole party stopped to watch us. That never happens.
This album is great! Also a huge fan of Deftones! I also highly recommend Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, definitely a different style from Tool or Deftones but is great in its own right. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching! I'll have to keep Linkin Park in mind.
My personal favorite album ever lol Simplistic wow ? Mantra is a cat purr slowed down. 6 and 7 are 1 song. Disposition/Reflection is an experience you need to have on mushies it's amazing life changing actually 01 tour baby! lol
No idea that was a cat purr slowed down on Mantra! That's pretty cool. By simplistic I just meant that they seemed to use a lot of minimalistic instrumentals, but the way they layer everything to create nuances in their sound is definitely anything but simplistic!
The Patient is still my favorite Tool song.
I like your channel. I do have a little piece of advice for the image part of the video which is to perhaps put less ISO when you film because there is little bit of noise in your image (mostly in the shadows)
Thanks, I'll have to try adjusting that next time I film :)
And ya, Chevelle singer sounds like Maynard of Tool😂 I’ve been saying that for years and since Maynard is in multiple bands its serendipity for fans
no he does not like no
Chevelle's singer has said that he takes inspiration from Tool and Deftones, and I can totally hear it
exactly! chevelle is imo a musically simpler, more consistent version of tool. other similar bands in this vibe metal vein are Katatonia, and Soen
@@warhearttv7625 haha
Idk if anyone mentioned it (or if you already knew) but Lateralus was written using the Fibonacci sequence. They also have a song on their latest album where the exact middle of the song hits during the word mitosis, which if you didn’t know, is a cell dividing into 2 (I swear I don’t want to be condescending 😂)
These guys are math gods 😂😂
I was in high school when this came out... Damn I'm old 😂🤣😂🤣 enjoy the spiral!!!
If you want your channel to blow up, I'd consider doing more tool reactions. Algorithm loves them. Sweet vid btw.
Thanks for watching! :)
Ikr?! The Danny Carey 'Pneuma' drumcam video reactions especially are like bees to honey for the Tool Army 😅
Ooh, I'll have to check some of those out!
Deftones and Tool are my two favorite bands but they are on totally different levels of talent
They are in my Top 5. System Of A Down, Lamb Of God, and Rage Against The Machine are my other 3.
Agreed
if we're talking about only danny carey then I would agree. everything else, not really
NIN, Deftones, and Tool are my top three favorite bands, so awesome to see other people discover these great artists! It took me a long time to really understand Maynard's approach to vocals because he's often placed a little further in the back of the mix and isn't as up front (which they also reflect in their stage show with Maynard often standing back near the drummer). I highly recommend sitting down with the lyrics and following along as not only what he is saying so interesting, but how he's singing is so unique. Also, Danny Carey has to be one of the best drummers of all time, I highly recommend watching the "drum cam" video of them performing Pneuma, off their most recent album "Fear Inoculum".
Absolutely my favorite album from Tool. The title track never fails to give me goosebumps!!!! Hearing it live was an absolutely life changing experience too.
I'm 25 seconds in and I just can't with this one. Christ. "So much energy" 😂 Wowzers.
Disposition, Reflection, and Triad are commonly referred to as the Unholy Trinity and are meant to be played together.
Great reaction for a great album🤘🙃
Thanks! :)
The background sound you always comment on is the Bass guitar
Lol
FAIIP DE OIAD is Ophanim for "Language of Angels" or something similar.
Voice of God in Enochian
Tool know how to take the listener on a fantastic musical journey for those willing to spend the time.
Glad to see you discover them and a great reaction as always!
I think I've mentioned before that you would enjoy Faith No More.... Please start with the album Angel Dust.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! A few others have mentioned Faith No More, I will have to check them out.
My 2 fav comments… “they’re doing a Deftones thing” and “He kind of sounds like the singer from Chevelle” 😂😂😂😂
I’m literally watching all of your reactions… Awesome job, the way you break down songs is amazing!
Love to have you do my bands album!
i did not see it mentioned in the top 100 or so comments, but Disposition/Reflection/Triad form a sequence, kind of like each is 1/3rd of a song, and they typically perform all 3 in a row if at all.
So, the audio in "Faaip de Oiad" was from an actual radio broadcast. That was from a 1997 episode of the late night talk show called Coast to Coast AM, and the stranger thing is the man (who called into the show) "stopped" when the radio station's transmitter went dead. When the station came back, the man was gone, and both the host, Art Bell, and the next call were confused, to say the least
My favorite all time album. With this, I can only assume you’ll be venturing into Faith No More and Mr Bungle next, alongside the rest of Tool’s discography
Almost Exactly what I think! I like Aenima a tiny bit more than this, but Faith no more and Mr bungle are my second favorites.
Faith No More or Bungle please 🙏
Disposition gotta be my favorite track because i really like meditation like music
The last track, Faaip De Oiad, was centred on a synth that belonged to the drummer, Danny Carey. He turned it on one day, and it started making that noise, so Danny started recording it, right up to the point where the synth died. That's literally what you're hearing! He plays drums over the top, and the vocal is an actual call made to this UFO-believer-type radio station...
I look forward to your reaction to their other albums, and I hope you check out their videos, even if you don't react to them - the video to Parabol/Parabola is especially mind blowing ☺️
I wish you all the best
That's cool, thanks for sharing that! Glad you enjoyed the reaction, and I am looking forward to hearing some more Tool...
Oh oh!! Will you do Sound Awake by Karnivool?? Thank thee🙏
Yay! You're starting Tool!
Tool is definitely more in the Prog-Rock vein than the metal vein. It's best to think of Tool songs more like classical pieces with movements rather than songs with choruses and verses.
That being said, their first two albums are more straightforward metal. Ænima is my favorite Tool album and the only one I really listen to while I'm working, doing chores or driving. Everything after this album you kind of have to take the time to sit and listen to really give it proper attention.
I'm still campaigning for you to react to Stabbing Westward, Filter and Marilyn Manson. If you like NIN you will probably like those artists.
I also would love to see you react to Soulfly's first two albums sometime. Super heavy tribal nu-metal is the best way to describe them. Chino from Deftones makes an appearance on a couple of their songs too.
Keep up these awesome reactions Molly :)
That's a good way of describing it in terms of classical compared to a typical chorus/verse structure. I look forward to hearing more from Tool and will definitely consider your other suggestions!
Id like to know what you have on your movie collection
A lot of old dvd's from when I was a kid haha, also random ones I've gotten from other people.
Adore Reflection. Probably my favourite from them.
The short interlude tracks are meant to be "Audio palate cleansers" between main theme songs.
I love this album. Heard it around the time I listened to Saturday Night Wrist!
Nailed it again with your top track, couldn’t agree more with Parabol/a
This album, along with Korn “Untouchables” and Slipknot “Iowa” all came out within a year. I miss those times!
I kind wished it was done in chronological order, but eh, what can ya do? Either way, Ya can’t go wrong with tool! But Tool and Deftones are one of my fave bands of all time alongside Radiohead and a few others.
Deftones, Tool, Radiohead... my favorites too
You need to listen to Parabol and Parabola together, straight in, no stopping.
You should check out Maynards side project, A Perfect Circle, Thirteenth Step is really good
I feel like you might like a certain heavy guitar sound maybe, where there's definitely a connection with the Deftones sound, and really, maybe no other sound out there like it. But if it's heavy, energy, scream, dance...you MUST try out the band and album Wisconsin Death Trip by Static-X
They're unique as well and you might dig that sound.
When I first heard this album, I didn't care for it much. Ænima I grew up with, and this was rather different. A few years ago I relistened to it, and it just is filled with so much power emotionally. A lot of their albums I find grow on you, cuz there's an album for every season of your life in their discog.
Also random; idk why but I would wanna see your reaction or thoughts on Monotheist by Celtic Frost. I'm not sure why, just curious your take on it.
Yes, Lateralus definitely is a grower album for sure! One listen is not nearly enough to appreciate it in its entirety. And thanks for the album recommendation, I'll have to check it out!
The footsteps that you thought you heard at the beginning of lateralis is actually a heartbeat
I wanna snuggle with ya and watch your DVD's.:)
For me the best album of the best band ever. Great reaction
Best drummer ever
Yeah, the percussion on this album was crazy good!
I'd say him and Chris Adler
Cool that you mentioned the singer sounds similar to the guy from Chevelle. They were inspired by Tool.
You can write an entire book about Schism. That song has so many layers to it. The bass line is fantastsic, drums are tight, Maynard's vocals are at his peak, and the lyrics are very deep and very well written. The production is phenomenal, the 4 vocal harmonies come in and out during the first verse and it sounds very haunting and beautiful at the same time, very similar effect to Gregorian Chant. The bass effects during the slow breakdown is Delay(echo effect), Fuzz, and a Volume pedal up and down. The percussion in disposition is Indian Tabla. The intro instruments at the beginning of Reflection are Synth Organ, and an Indian Sarangi, you can hear the bow against the strings when it slides up to the higher notes.
That would be a very boring book.. 😂🤣
The Bass is actually Justin doing volume swells with his Wal Master Vol knob and him rocking A Bass whammy back and forth while using distortion, delay and flanger.
With most Tool albums, you kinda need to listen from start to finish.
And I know it's a lot of time. But it is helpful to start at the beginning of the discography to see the evolution of the sound.
You definitely need to check out A Perfect Circle and Puscifer once you get thru Tool. It's a never ending, timeless journey. Lol
IMHO Ticks & Leeches is the most Deftones-sounding song in Tool's catalogue. The quiet/loud "suck me dry" section in the middle of the song wouldn't sound out of place at all on a Deftones album.
I dunno man Deftones sounds so different to my ears than any Tool song. I'd be awesome if they did another collab like Passenger
I second another Tool/Deftones collab, that would be awesome!
Eon blue has always been/felt like the intro for the patient. And the weird sounds in the beginning of the patient are the base playing through a wah pedal I'm pretty sure.
4:10 "It builds up very gradually" - several seconds full grunge! ;)
Originally Tool wanted to release this album as one track so you had to listen to the entire album with no skips. But the record label hated this idea so it didn’t happen.
Where'd you hear that
You're hittin a lot of my favorite bands. Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Gojira, Gorillaz. Love these vids
Glad you're enjoying the channel :)
Great reaction! I think you should do Aenema Album next
Thanks, I'm certainly curious to hear what Aenima sounds like!
I love the intensity Tool can bring, but some of the tracks or sections with a more restrained, stripped down, mellow vibe... I've had some nights, driving on the highway with hardly a car around me listening to this album, Aenima and 10,000 Days that were pretty serene.
I also love your take on each track.
Yes, their mellower/more melodic pieces are some of my favorites. Love how they can go so hard and yet infuse those serene moments as well.
@@mollyesanborn that's probably why descending from their latest album is one of my favorites. It literally starts with an oceanic soundscape.
Justin Chancellor, their bassist, is often the backbone for their more chill soundscapes. His use of bass guitar is second to none (and one of the reasons I bought a bass guitar myself).
I can't wait to hear it!
You reacted to the whole album? Are you the chosen one?
My favorite album!! :3
If you know what the Fibonacci sequence is, listen to the song Lateralus again but think of that pattern
Triad always reminded me of Ravel’s Bolero. Instead of a middle eastern caravan approaching, passing by and then receding, it’s mad crazy machines coming towards you and then moving off.
Molly pls try to make a review about A Perfect Circle, its maynard alternative project
I agree with antdujrs comment. You should go back and roll with Opiate and work your way back up to Fear. Tool has a nice progression from album to album. The growth as musicians to artists is very pronounced
Fun fact: Maynard, TOOL's singer, sings on the song Passenger by Deftones
If you liked listening to them you should see them live. They are, without question, the best band I have ever seen live. I have been to six shows and they never disappoint. You should also check out Maynard's (singer) other band Puscifer. Very different from TOOL.
I don't think I have ever heard anyone describe Tool as minimalistic??? I am not even sure how to wrap my mind around that repeated comment.
You’ve heard this guy, Maynard, in a Deftones song before as well, Passenger that is.
Comparing tool to deftones?
The patient is my favorite track off this album.
