  • Anton Krupicka is an icon of mountain running in the USA. At 23-years-old he won Leadville 100 in Colorado and more recently has blazed a high altitude trail on extensive bikepacking tours.
We wanted to know what drove Anton to chase these experiences. A need for self reliance and a desire for discovery have fueled years of awe-inspiring achievements that have motivated runners, cyclists and climbers around the world. In this film, Anton dives into the purpose behind his pursuits.
For more on Anton, read his 'SW Super Tour' feature here:
    content.rapha....
A project where he set out to ride a self-supported 2,000 mile bikepacking loop through SW America and along the way summit 5 technical and exposed high desert mountains.

Tony i remember turning 40. It concerned me and figured life might be over. But it was at 40 that i discovered you .. and started to train like you.. and finished 32 ultras.. and God knows how many thousands of training miles. I am now a lot older running my own farm in the middle of the desert where growing anything is nearly impossible. I wish i was 40.. i missing watching you and running .. thank you!

I been waiting for this colab for a long time. One of my favorite athletes and one of my favorites brands, making a classic Rapha film. Match made in heaven. At 41 I also find my self seeking activities that I can connect to, which means spending more time in the mountains.

The shaky video of Anton running up Grant Teton together with Kilian underlined by a great song from Animal Collective is still one of my favorite Trail Running Clips. This man is a legend and is good to see him on a bike doing what he does best….moveing on while talking about this crazy and beautyfull life🙏

Feels like Rapha have got their mojo back, this style of emotive personal connection has been missing for a long time, felt like the brand became faceless and lost it's identity since the end of the Continental era. Good to see stuff like this coming back

Tony has been a long-time pillar of purity for me, but fell off my radar in the last few years. This vid was perfect medicine for the phase I'm working through right now. Glad to see he's crushing hard as ever, and articulating better than ever the challenge to balance beauty, transcendence, and hardship that most of us are well acquainted with.

I never put any comments out there ever, but definitely just want to give perspective on this. I’ve been injured from over training for over four years. I’ve been on long runs in the prettiest places where I don’t remember any of it because of obsessive based focus. Seriously enjoying a walk can make just as good memories as you being on god level fitness in the mountains. There’s so much out there in the world. Do everything, just be grateful you get to do it and don’t piss on people who just want to do chill paces all the time. It’s very much their life.

    • @nickwilsonxc

I highly doubt Tony’s intention was to put down runners who run at slower paces. If you also have a history of over training and pushing your body to it’s limits, you should be able to relate to what he’s saying as much as anyone, that there is indeed something rich about giving it your all from time to time. If there wasn’t something of deep value to be derived from that experience we would undoubtedly choose the easier route every time rather than push our bodies to their breaking point. I agree with you that there is a time and place for both mentalities, and I’m sure Anton would agree with you on that as well. He loves being out in nature and taking in the beauty of the landscapes as much as anyone does.

Great to see Anton again. One thing that makes me wonder about our culture is the swearing in this short video. For the last 15 years of podcasts, films and other public appearances I literally heard Anton swear 2 or 3 times. He’s such a smart and educated guy with interesting opinions. He’s always been known as a well spoken, well read and quite erudite. Do we really have to lower our standards and normalise base language in the public space?

Wanting to find cosmic connection, yet disparages “stopping to smell the flowers.” “It’s not meaningful if you aren’t challenging yourself” yet the video ends with something about convincing yourself that riding your bike for hours is a good idea?
I celebrate your investigations but you haven’t gone far enough inward, you haven’t accepted some hard truths about the world. Not everything is contrived, but ultra-endurance sport sure as hell is.

The poor 1st world tourists that have the curse of nothing in life "needing" to be hard, chasing the tail of meaning in life with expensive contrived hobbies. If you've got this same curse, and find yourself as miserable as this Anton, and are looking for motivation or menaing, here is one idea. Take a hard look at the supply chains of both physical material and human labor that afford you the privilege that gives you this disease of excess. Slowly start cutting yourself off from the wealth pump, taking back more direct responsibility for the things that support your lifeway. You dont have to do it all at once, you dont have the knowledge or skill to even try, but you can work in that direction step by step, all the while learning just how much skill and effort goes into prviding for a life well lived, and that none if that is contrived, just outsourced to someone or someplace else. You'll never again be unmotivated or bored or feel confused about how it is that you are "somehow connected to it all" you'll just start becoming literally connected. The whole ide a is to "belong" to your environment / community This guy spins tales about living closer to the bone and off the land, lol. The guy is a tourist.
