  • C.P.Cavafy's poem 'Ithaca', recited by Sir Sean Connery and with music specially composed by Vangelis.
    ITHACA [1910, 1911]
As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
    Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensasion
touches your spirit and your body.
    Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
    wild Poseidon-you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope that your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
    with what pleasure, what joy,
    you come into harbors you're seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
    to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
    sensual perfume of every kind-
    as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and learn again from those who know.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you're destined for.
But don't hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so that you're old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you've gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would have not set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca won't have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you'll have understood by then what these Ithacas mean.

I have my Ithaca. A tragic and beautiful woman from Greece. I traveled half way across the world for her believing we were meant to be together. Even though we no longer speak I found my home, my people, and my life.

This poem is about far more than Greece... This is a mystic poem creating a metaphor for one's life by using the imagery of Homer's story. The journey is far more valuable than reaching the end. 👁🙏

Because Greek is unparallel the most beautiful and rich language of the world. It is a language which was invented to explain the meaning of the universe, engaging with astronomy, science, drama, historiography, philosophy and of course political ideas such as democracy. Greek is the only language that is able to describe anything with only one word. This is the true legacy of for the moderns Greeks, our language.

I'm not sure if Ithaca is death. Maybe it's a lifetime's target, a long time goal to achieve. For which of course the `marvelous journey` is the most important part: Fighting for it, expecting it, visioning it, devote fully one's body and soul for it.
For me, a Greek person being now away in Germany for in[de]finite time, Ithaca is simply Greece itself: My poor bleeding mother, my bitter home country from which I left disappointed, to become wiser with years and maybe appreciate and go back...

@@innosanto Of course there is. That is the whole point underlying Cavafy's masterful poem. But you don't need to read it all. It is enough to know that the Odyssey is about Ulysses's ten-year journey back home at the end of the Trojan war - victorious, on his way home to his faithful wife waiting for him, but first he must pass through incredible, fearful adventures and temptations that shape him as a man, much more than his glorious participation in the Trojan war had done.
Read also Tennyson's "Ulysses". A completely different take - it happens AFTER Ulysses reached home - but just as epic.
Ulysses is regarded as the archetype of Western man: clever, crafty, impetuous, alyays looking for something better.

Ale bynajmniej nie śpiesz się w podróży.
Lepiej, by trwała ona wiele lat,
nie oczekują wcale, by ci dała bogactwo Itaka.

This is just awesome. Last year I took a literature course entitled "the Heroic Journey," and the professor showed us this video. We also read the book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" and watched movies based on the heroic journey like the Matrix and Rocky. I learned a lot. It was a great class.

Yes, that is how I discovered this poem-I read a book about Jackie. The book mentioned this poem was read at her funeral. I looked it up and came across this rendition. Chances are this rendition has greater impact with the music and the professional tones of Sean Connery, than the rendition that was heard at the funeral.

Atm, I'm reading The Odyssey of Homer.
I need an Ithaca to journey back to, so I can mature my soul, as Cavafy points out in this absolutely flabbergasting combination of music, text, voice, and meaning.

Socrates said, " Know Thy Self "
To become more aware you must first search out your unique abilities, capabilities, talents or gifts and then nurture them to fullness and enlist them to make a difference for the greater good.
Find time for quietness at least once a day.
Feed your mind with the myriads of wonders found in books and poems.
Become LOVE and finally experience your freedom !
Ithaca awaits within to be brought out for all to see - the all in all within and without.
    Become!
