- C.P.Cavafy's poem 'Ithaca', recited by Sir Sean Connery and with music specially composed by Vangelis.
ITHACA [1910, 1911]
As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensasion
touches your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope that your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors you're seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind-
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and learn again from those who know.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you're destined for.
But don't hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so that you're old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you've gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would have not set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca won't have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you'll have understood by then what these Ithacas mean.
I have my Ithaca. A tragic and beautiful woman from Greece. I traveled half way across the world for her believing we were meant to be together. Even though we no longer speak I found my home, my people, and my life.
Well, thank you so much!
I got the same story Ian, I fell in love with a greek woman but my soul was conquered by Greece.
Ah .....the journey isn't over .
God bless .
I want to write the second verse to Cavafys' poem. I think I almost have it.
Welcome and enjoy !
RIP Sean Connery. Your journey was long and marvelous and you arrived at the island old, full of experience. Rest now in Ithaca.
Old, but young in heart and spitit.

This poem is about far more than Greece... This is a mystic poem creating a metaphor for one's life by using the imagery of Homer's story. The journey is far more valuable than reaching the end. 👁🙏
Well said.
Kavafis wrote it for each person who can feel the meaning of this poem and the moto life that provides regadrless nationality!
ok! But there is always Greece the soil for this flower.. The metaphoric soil!
❤@@ntinetaspi as you say.... those times were auspicious times when these masters walked the streets.

For me, Greece is not just about the crisis, the bankruptcy, the public debt, etc. Greece is also a beautiful country with a wonderful people which is able to do such marvelous things like this poem by Kavafis. The world owes you very much! Thank you!
Greetings from Portugal
Thank you for your kind words!
Thank you!
greece is an incredible country, i go every summer since 2 years ago, sadly europe treats greece not remenbering history, our democracy comes from greece, our sciences come from greece, our filosofy comes from greece, roman empire was the engineer of greek science. We forget our past. greetings from spain....
Greetings from Athens Brother!!!
Thank you for your comment. Cavafis was a born and raised in the Alexandria of Egypt, in a Greek community which thrived for many decades, while living in harmony with the locals. My father and my grandmother were born there, these people had and have a special culture.
R.I.P Sean Connery..
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.

A masterpiece of Greek poetry and Sean does it justice
This is my favorite poem in my life. It is not necessarily the best translation but reads easier for the less knowledgeable. I love hearing Sean Connery read anything. Listening to him read my favorite poem was fun.
This really keeps me going. Have to re-listen every now and then to spread my wings back again.

if you could just hear and understand this poem in its original language.. GREEK.. is 1000 times more wonderful..!!!!
Because Greek is unparallel the most beautiful and rich language of the world. It is a language which was invented to explain the meaning of the universe, engaging with astronomy, science, drama, historiography, philosophy and of course political ideas such as democracy. Greek is the only language that is able to describe anything with only one word. This is the true legacy of for the moderns Greeks, our language.
No need to disagree with you. However, English is necessary so others can grasp the essence of what is written by OUR Cavafy... as much as it gets. please enjoy, travel and reach your goal.
The message goes over as well with the English.
Being a Greek, I agree with the uniqueness of the Greek language. HOWEVER, Sean Connery gives the best narration, in my opinion, ever.
RIP Sir Thomas Sean Connery.
Wonderful! A metaphor for the human journey through life
A metaphor for the targets that we set out for
A metaphor of death, which can't give you anything. Live your life as fully as you can.
C.P. Cavafy is the greatest of Greek poets !
All the essence of the Greek spirit in one poem !!!
I am Chinese and I knew this amazing poem by accident.I thought both of the poem and the voice are excellent,I love this poem!!!!!☺
How did you discover it?
Brian Lemaire I just input "ithaka" in CZcams
brings tears to my eyes .SO meaningful ,so
powerful , the essence of life..
I'm not sure if Ithaca is death. Maybe it's a lifetime's target, a long time goal to achieve. For which of course the `marvelous journey` is the most important part: Fighting for it, expecting it, visioning it, devote fully one's body and soul for it.
For me, a Greek person being now away in Germany for in[de]finite time, Ithaca is simply Greece itself: My poor bleeding mother, my bitter home country from which I left disappointed, to become wiser with years and maybe appreciate and go back...
No Ithaca is not death. Ithaca is home, Ithaca is your goal and whatever you or your soul are longing to return to. Have a read of Oddysey and the journeys he went through for 14 years before he came back to his Ithaca. Even better visit the Island and then you will understand my friend. "Ithaca's" are about life ;-)
@@calliope8muse well said .
Ithaca shows you where to go and how to get there and then you come home to her what is next?
Definitely get in touch with mom. Don't let the Lystragoinians keep you from her.
Rest in Peace Sir.. you have inspired legions of us to be classy, controlled, brave and gallant. Rest in Peace, Scotsman.
I read this poem to my newborn baby and she looked at me with stars in her eyes

Omer myth of Odyssey and Kavafis allegory. What a moment! Destiny and destination, eternal archetypes, the meaning of life, the truth itself in front of us.
The masterpiece of human existence: The sad Kavafis delivered us the most optimist, open, epic and free way to live our lives. Touched. Life is different after reading and understanding this poem.
Kavafis...The Greek poet, who is the greatest among all poets in the world...RESPECT TO THE ONE AND ONLY...A GREAT HUMAN BEING...HIS LIFE ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY...
R.I.P. Legend...May your Soul travel easily to Ithaca...
terrific reading by Connery of an excellent poem by the great Cavafy. Vangelis atmospheric music helps a lot as well.
One more reason now that this video brings tears in my eyes. RIP Sir.
a true inspiration for all who seek their own Ithaca... good luck to all and remember to enjoy the journey...

My inn is called ITHAKA here in the Catskills of NY, I named it this as I have been coming here since before I was born and now in my mature age, am back, forever, never to leave.
keep Ithaca always in mind. This is the journey of life. Keep going! Thanks for sharing!
How full this poem is of hope and longing, and an exhortation that one's destination is not home, but the journey toward that home.
Ithaca´s promise will never fail us. The eternal search for knowledge.
Thank you
I think I accidentally broke my repeat button. I love this so much!!
Such a beautiful scenario.
Vangelis is ALWAYS excellent.
Sean Connery is CLASSIC.
Thank You !!!
This poem has the tears of my life and when I can't anymore I remember Ithaca
Connery's voice adds a wonderful dimension to this marvellous poem by Cavafy. Thank you for posting :-)
Maybe the best and the most meaningful poem.Cavafis is superb.
A lovely tribute now to Sir Sean. Thank you for the joy this brings every time I listen. RIP Mr Bond.
I just wish you could all listen and understand his poems in greek. To listen to the beauty of his words. His poems speak to our souls.
Rest in peace GIANT Sean Connery. 31 October 2020. You were one of a kind Sir..
Maybe the best and most meaniful poem.
What a diamond of a comment.. !
Very fitting and inspirational in these troubling times..
Thank you, God bless and may you Rest in Peace in God's Kingdom Sir Sean Connery

Every word has meaning when read by Connery. He is truly a talent.
I listen to this on the days I need reminding. Wings, indeed.
God is not the God of the dead but the living. See you soon my friend Sean.
now I understand james joyce and his book of Dublin ...ULYSSES !
is there some connection with the odyssey? If yes then I really want to read it.
@@innosanto Of course there is. That is the whole point underlying Cavafy's masterful poem. But you don't need to read it all. It is enough to know that the Odyssey is about Ulysses's ten-year journey back home at the end of the Trojan war - victorious, on his way home to his faithful wife waiting for him, but first he must pass through incredible, fearful adventures and temptations that shape him as a man, much more than his glorious participation in the Trojan war had done.
Read also Tennyson's "Ulysses". A completely different take - it happens AFTER Ulysses reached home - but just as epic.
Ulysses is regarded as the archetype of Western man: clever, crafty, impetuous, alyays looking for something better.
Even in English this poem is a masterpiece! ..RiP Sean Connery...thank you for the memories !!
A Poem....Life! There are no trial runs here...One go, make it worth it!

Good night to an amazing man. We will miss you Sean.
Ale bynajmniej nie śpiesz się w podróży.
Lepiej, by trwała ona wiele lat,
nie oczekują wcale, by ci dała bogactwo Itaka.
amazing voice and music! thanks Sean, and Vangelis.

The most beautiful poem ever.

Simply soothing for our souls. A map for life, a prescription for truly loving yourself.
This is just awesome. Last year I took a literature course entitled "the Heroic Journey," and the professor showed us this video. We also read the book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" and watched movies based on the heroic journey like the Matrix and Rocky. I learned a lot. It was a great class.
Awesome. The music blends very well with Sean's voice.
This poem was read at the funeral of Jacquie Onassis
Yes, that is how I discovered this poem-I read a book about Jackie. The book mentioned this poem was read at her funeral. I looked it up and came across this rendition. Chances are this rendition has greater impact with the music and the professional tones of Sean Connery, than the rendition that was heard at the funeral.
"Keep Ithaca always on your mind" and at the background Hagia Sophia....
one of the greatest poems ever written by man
RIP! and THANK YOU Great man.
Rest In Peace Vangelis thank you for all your amazing Music including Chariots of Fire and this

Sean Connerys' voice blended with Vangelis' soulful music lend the perfect atmosphere to Cavafy's lovely poem.
This video is mesmerizing. I am in a trance when I hear it and I can't hear it enough.
What a wonderful journey...timeless
My English teacher is making me watch this
With the sad news of Vangelis' passing, this music is all the more poignant. Bravo, maestro; your Ithaca is waiting, and we will not see your like again.
very, very, very beautifull poem by Constantinos Cavafys, we are all in this journey to ithaca(ithaca is death in case someone didnt understand the meaning of the poem) and we should get the best of it.
So extraordinary! The poem, the voice, the music..
My favorite poem, always a part of my mp3 player.
Atm, I'm reading The Odyssey of Homer.
I need an Ithaca to journey back to, so I can mature my soul, as Cavafy points out in this absolutely flabbergasting combination of music, text, voice, and meaning.
Marvellous!
Just amazing, sends goose bumps down my spine
"Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you'll have understood by then what these Ithacas mean."
Cavafy's (bitter) irony at its very best.
I will talk about the poem thats the meaning as Konstantinos Moschonas said below! His voice is tremendous, the pictures are amazing, the poem is beautiful, the journey is incredible, the feelings are so powerful, thank you for this uploader these 4:26 minutes made me think what life means...
" The journey is our life. Ithaka is our death. Think of the poem by this view.... "
Maybe not our death, but our final moments before death.
My favorite view than all. Well done. :)
Ithaca's are the targets that we set out for in Cavafy's alegory;)
Precious
Thank you !!

What a beautiful rendering of this heroic poem.
