My 2021 rapeseed harvest turns out to be even worse than I expected

  • Growing OSR in the UK has become an expensive gamble after the banning of neonicotinoid seed dressings a few years ago. I had hoped my crop had recovered from the early cabbage stem flea beetle but then a disastrous flush of weeds took over much of the crop after the heavy rainfall in May/June time. In this video, the combine reveals how bad it was..

@andrew scott if there is no driver shortage, how can you explain that EVERY big haulage company is at least 20 drivers short? 20-30% of the drivers in the UK were eastern europeans, now from brexit and IR35 they went in another country, and that left a very big gap. And now is not a big shortage, you will see in 2years,when a lot more british drivers will retire and the last of the eastern europeans leave the UK, then will be a even greater shortage.

This video brings back happy memories of the mid to late 1970's. My Dad finishing work and then straight away taking me to the cornfields near our home so I could watch the combine. I'd happily watch whilst chattering away, until they put lights on and then he would insist on taking me home. Of course, those cornfields are long gone with houses built where they used to be. It's crazy to look at Google maps and see where all the beautiful fields were.

Thank you for also showing how much of the harvest needs to filtered out via the return flow of the combine. Think your Case combine is a wonderful machine, doing an excellent job though, the harvested OSR product result looks still good. Nice to have weather apps these days, as it allows to do little bit of planning notwithstanding high variability. Wishing you together good luck with continuation of the harvest of wheat and so on, just after the showers may have stopped. Kind of an all wet season 2021. This channel has so much potential and I would love to see multiple uploads a week, from day to day odd jobs etc not just when something big is happening. The popularity of clarksons farm and with light of their being a second series you should really look to bask on the popularity of that. Really enjoyed the dynamic with the phone calls between Harry and Charlie, it added another dynamic to the channel and made me very immersed in the film. Just a suggestion on the audio, maybe it’s worth putting a shotgun mic in the cab with a wind protector to get a bit higher quality, however I do understand the need to keep everything quick and easy. I’m a huge fan of both channels as the content is really original and realist in its style, I would love to see this channel get to the same size as h’s garage. I’m a film student at university and would love to have a go editing one of these episodes if that’s something that would be of interest Harry! Take care

Hi Harry. I've really enjoyed watching your videos - I've just caught up to the most recent one after starting at the beginning a couple of months ago and I've learnt so much about such an important topic, I really appreciate you taking the time to make them. I'm a veg grower in Somerset and I fully empathise with the challenges posed by nature and the financial precarity of farming life - our farm is under 5 hectares so we don't have any subsidy to back us up but we grow 40 different types of veg so are thankfully less likely to ever lose a whole crop.
One thing I keep coming back to is the glypho question - I remember in one video you acknowledged people's concerns but said the health worries were just based on one case in the US and it was nothing to worry about. I wonder if you've read the evaluation from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organisation) which looked at 1000 peer reviewed studies and found glyphosate to be "probably carcinogenic to humans"? www.iarc.who.int/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/MonographVolume112-1.pdf
If you have and have dismissed it then it’d be really interesting to know on what basis, and if you haven’t it’d be really interesting to know what it makes you think about using it.
I understand how crucial a part of modern arable farming Roundup is, particularly if you’re trying to sequester carbon and improve soil life through no-till (and I’ve done enough weeding in my life to be almost tempted!), but given its prevalence in growing the crops we are all eating every day and your large and growing audience for whom you are often a first window into farming for, I feel like it deserves a more in-depth look, like how you’ve revisited and challenged some of the narratives around beef.
Anyway, I hope your crops get away well and all the best for 2022.

Good video! We can now see why all farmers are unhappy, when you want a bone dry field next to one that is absolutely soaking! Also, love the organised chaos of harvest time - Thank You and Charlie for giving us the inside look.
Re machinery: I was going to ask what you think about the main brand you run, but actually as a business running very complex machinery, your "brand" choice must be heavily tied to excellent and during harvest almost instant support from your local distributor/machine shop - perhaps there's a video idea in that - Good Luck!

An informative and honest video, many thanks. It will be interesting to watch the seedbed preparation for the wheat crop following OSR. The challenge being the level of rubbish and its treatment. Sadly, as you showed, you cannot combine anything that is not of a similar size to OSR, it will block the combine. You lose the benefit of cutting and chopping the crop which will mean it will now have to be chopped separately (an extra cost for seedbed preparation) and then incorporated more extensively, potentially even ploughing. This will take you away from your desired soil management practice and potentially introduce additional establishment crops. I look forward to seeing how you will approach this. A small footnote, I farmed in the 1980s and I always drilled OSR at the beginning of August; it established well, however the additional leaf cover meant I was plagued with pigeons!

My friend Tommy and I have just repaired the drive shaft on one of those Manitous it was a pig to do. So don't let it get to old. They can get a bit trouble some.

Against the clock, well we’ve all been there (albeit in different situations). Your combine driver, aka son, requires delivering to refreshments via the artic Rolls Royce when its all over. Good to see that Range Rover still in service, if I didn’t live in London I’d have one.

Sorry to see that the harvest didn't go as planned, but that wheat is looking more promising.
