Some great comments, and some not so. Im a full time arborist, and come from a huge family line of arborists.
I'm a die hard husqvarna man all my ground saws are husqvarna. I climb with stihls.
But I now own 4 echoes 2 ground saws and 2 climbing saws. I have just brought 2 of the newer version echoes that you have shown in this video the Tes, version I run them on a 1/4pitch 12 inch stihl bar picco, great combination. Any way thanks for all your time and effort, Great clear professional video.

Definitely recommend this top handle husqvarna to the core but it's so light on harness Japanese quality build only used it for a hour but very impressed from west Yorkshire uk

@@MarkThomasBuilder I did watch another video of a expierenced tree man testing that saw out in a tall pine tree and he only used one hand a couple times. For the most part he was using both. That saw peformed nicely taking down that pine.

You won't be able to start it.
I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle czcams.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

14" if I changed the bar and sprocket like some are doing. While I think the Echo brand is getting really up there with the top handles they will not hang with the Husqvarna or Stihl pro rear handles.
I've seen ECHO really up their game in the outdoor power equipment over the last few years. I wouldn't be surprised if they put some extra emphasis on the rear handle saws,.
Echo has been making decent, but not top-of-the-line saws for decades, but for a saw this small I would use a 12" bar because the longer your bar, the more drag on the engine and less cutting power.
12" especially if you want to get riskier with one-handed ops, lighter and less kickback torque. Also due to 25 cc.
I have 5 Echos - 300-14 top, 310-14, 370-16, 490-20, 590-20. Always choose smallest to get the job done. Except the 300, oldest and always a flaky starter, and top handle only if absolutely necessary (above ground).
310 gets most use by far - one of very best values out there. Very easy to start cold and warm. If doing it again I'd get a 352 with a 14" - a little more power for hardwood and dead wood.
I prefer the newer design 490 to the 590 because it is much lighter, mostly for bucking work. 590 comes out for felling where I need a 20 with more power through light 'pinching' risk situations.
I will probably be getting a new top handle - 2511 now in the hunt, thanks for the video review.
For a 28, will probably go to a Stihl with enough power for a 32. 590 and above Echo are just too heavy IMO.

I really like this vlog. Good substance, great delivery. Had an ECHO long time ago, used it all up until it wasn’t going anywhere anymore! I got too old to crank on any chain saw, lawnmower, etc., .But, I had to go battery in my old age.Thanks for posting.

I just bought one and love it already. It's so light and easy to use! It's not a beast by any means, but it's more powerful than you would expect from such a small and lightweight chainsaw. Just keep a sharp blade on it and you'll love it.

A muffler mod and a 1/4 chain on it, and it's a beast.

My introduction to Echo was when I bought a Power Pruner in the 1990s. Echo made their engines then. That is a good thing. Later, Echo bought the Power Pruner company. Also a good thing. I have detected no interruption in parts or service re my machine, which is from the old company.
We would like to know the price of this saw, in your area. Even one sample price.
I have been looking at Echo's arborist saws. You did a good demonstration.
(Just one thing: please don't leave a stub when cuting a branch offf a living tree.)
As I read through the comments I see guys who want to be the exception to good rules. You are right. We should not use the saw with just a single hand. And to those guys I would suggest, if you do one hand cutting, don't write about it. If you are married or have parents, there are a few small things you keep to yourself. Let this be one of them, rather than chiming in, here, and leading others astray.
By the way, I got a serious chain saw cut with an 011, years ago. I was using just one hand to make a cut. Lots of stitiches! So, been there, done that.
Thanks for a good review of the little things. I'm not a real modern guy, but I appreciate the primer bulbs, rope loops and compression releases on so many saws nowadays.
Which bar/chain would I choose? I would get the 14" setup so I have more reach in the tree. But I always carry spare parts. So I would keep the 12" setup with me.
Would anyone like to talk about the spare parts they always take to the job? I take a spark plug,
Fuel filter,
Air filter ,
Fuel cap,
Oil cap,
Saw files,
Brush to clean files,
File guides,
Extra chain,
Bar tip grease gun,
Extra bottle of fuel mix oil,
and so on.
And tools.
These things reduce sudden trips to the store, a saw going out of service, and that sort of thing. It has saved me, and others several times.
Exceptions depend on the model of saw. I have been doing this since the 1980s. So there have been some real changes.

Thanks for taking the time to post that, there's some great advice there. I like how prepared you are. The last thing you want to do in the middle of cutting wood is make a run to the store.

It's an awesome saw that really goes to work on smaller stuff. I like the top handle and the light weight.

I have 6 chainsaws from my baby, this one, to a 71cc with 24" bar. This is my fave hands down. You just can't believe how powerful and easy this is to use.
One of my favorites too! They now have a TN version, which is a slightly thinner bar and different chain. It's faster and a little smoother, without the chatter.
Echo has been killing it with their chainsaws. We have a big wooded area in our property and we got this for light duty use. Performs phenomenal.
This saw can really take on a tree cleanup in a hurry.

My OLD Homelite XL top handle 10in Finally Gave up the ghost. I Have my Big saws But I Love little top handle saws. Deffintly going to look into one.
This is a great saw that quickly goes to work and is very productive for it's size. I often grab this saw before my other ones.
I have two Echo chainsaws, plus or minus $300 consumer models that I bought from Home Depot. I gave away my $400 Stihl with its weird starting mechanism and "green" features to my neighbor. Gave it away. I left the $500 Husq out on the side of the road after it had been to the shop four times in three months and the dealer refused to trade it back in. Literally pulled over on the side of the road and set it down and drove off. Both of those saws were supposed to be professional grade, but they stayed in the shop and needed constant babying. The two Echos I have from Home Depot could probably be dropped out of an aircraft and still start. The oldest one just got pulled out of my garage after being in there for almost two years without starting. I put fresh gas in her, pumped the little fuel primer, pulled the cord twice, and she fired right up. She has never ever failed to start and has cut lots of trees and even survived being loaned to my half retarded neighbor. For the remainder of my life, as long as Echo stays Echo, I will never ever own anything but an Echo saw. I'm ordering this for one of my kids for him to use on the farm.
Wow that's great to hear about your experience with ECHO saws. I know the company well and they're constantly innovating and making advances in outdoor power equipment.
I used to loan tools to someone who seemed to break everything. It's funny how the blame was always that the tools didn't hold up or were defective.
I have three of the 2511. They are awesome little saws. I run mine on motomix or aspen.
I haven't tried any of those fuel mixes yet. These saws are pretty amazing!

My first look at this saw made me wonder what the excitement is. Once I started using it, I couldn't believe how awesome it is.
Came across your videos somehow and really like them. We just picked up the Echo CS-310 14" chainsaw along with one of their trimmers. Also saw you had a review for the Weber Burger press and bought that as well.

310 is great but the 590 timber wolf is a beast. and ita 300 less then it was 5 years ago
I have a CS -300 top handle, 310, 370, 490 and 590 - so many because of two properties.
The 310 14" is the one I use the most, and the rear handle config is easier to control unless you are climbing - great little saw, especially at $200 new. If doing it again for a small rear handle, I'd probably get the 352 and put a 14" bar on it. A bit more power for hardwood or dead wood.
For the 20", the 590 is a beast but the 490 is worth a good look, 20" but slightly lighter bar, and a more modern Echo design and much lighter than the 590.
For 16 or 18, not too impressed with the 370 or 400 - they are old designs with marginal chain brakes in the cover.
For a top handle, I really like the 2511 in this video. My CS-300 is pretty long in the tooth, and has become difficult to start. The reduced-effort start on this new model is worth the extra cost alone.
Cs 310 is the best. Owned it for over 8 years still running like new

I have this saw and I swear it just out performed my Stihl MS-271 Farm Boss that thing is junk! I’m a Echo guy but I wanted to see what all the rave was about Stihl and I’m not impressed at all. Echo starts right up every time, the Farm Boss is very difficult to start and it cuts off. I used them both on a fallen tree and for its size it definitely out performed the farm boss I really should have gone with the Echo Timber Wolf!
My stihl hand held blower was in the shop getting the starter rope replaced for the third time so i got my 44 yo echo hh blower out and it cranked third pull . had not been cranked in 5 years !!! Thats quality for you !!!
@@MtPilot-mh3zl ... I live in Canada, so what I do in the off season I always drain the gas out, & put in VP (Small Engine Fuels) mixed (2) stroke gas with 'no ethanol' over the winter, ... in the Spring they START on the 2nd./ 3rd pull !
Kawasaki makes great (2) stroke engines as well. I have a backpack blower with one !

My father had an Echo, I wtched it take a fall off the back of the truck at 35 mph slide down the highway, picked it up and fired right off and a little bit of road rash.

My cs490 got pinched as a tree twisted when fell I had to let it go and get out of Dodge, it slammed my saw into the ground bending the bar but that was the only damage nothing on the powerhead took damage the new bar was like 60 bucks totally worth it lol

@michael lee i have had mainly echos and stihls. The echo i have now has out lasted any of the stills. It has a 14" bar, and most of my work is relatively small diameter, but if i come across larger stuff it does just fine. Also like he showed the carburature filter is great. Takes a fraction of a second to clean and cleans perfectly as opposed to the sponge filters.
@michael lee Im glad I stumbled upon this comment. I have one stihl that I bought in 2003 and never had a problem. I bought a bigger stihl in 2016 and Im not impressed. Im really glad to hear someone else confirm this.
@michael lee Do these small echo saws put out plenty of bar oil on the chain? I have noticed my stihl doesn't seem to keep the chain lubed.
@michael lee Thanks man for all the info. Ill get the exact model of mine in the morning. I know its the 14 inch stihl ..and i bought it in 2003. It has the quick chain tension adjustment that requires no tools to tighten chain. I think its a MS 180 trail boss

Yes, it would be a great choice. Not too heavy and the 12" bar would be enough.
I’ve owned the CS-271T for a few years and it looks similar to CS-2511T. The 271T has been a great performer and starts easy in all weather. I use 50:1 pre-mix fuel since I can’t get no-alcohol gas in my area.
Glad to hear it performs well for you! I have to drive a little further to get the non-ethanol fuel, but it's worth it.

This is the saw I use everyday for my trimming and pruning. I just use a custom oilmatic chain, and this saw is better than any 201tc. Hands down
I wasn't sure how much I'd use it at first. Now, I use it all the time and it's one of my favorite go-to saws.
@@MarkThomasBuilder it's definitely my daily unless I'm doing a bigger scale removal, In that case I'll use the 201. The echo x series is definitely a pleasant surprise for its low cost. My only issue is that I have to get custom mad oilmatic chains.
25cc vs 35cc.....for removals a 200t or 201tc is the only choice....i put this thing in a similar class to the 192t and 193t.....i just dont think i will ever like an echo as much as a stihl or husky i just dont think they are even half as good but everyone has an opinion i guess, cheers.

A little side note on one handing a top handle saw: Forensic anthropologists excavating a medieval site can tell who the swordsmen were by the tendon scars left on the bones. These scars are from years of sword practice, not the result of a bloody encounter. The human body adapts to extended activity. The same thing happens with arborists with years of experience. Their arms adapt to running a saw one handed. Like sword fighting, it is fatiguing so they don't do a lot of it. Contrast that with Joe Sixpack who thinks that sitting on a bar stool makes him the equal of any man and an expert on winning supper bowls. In a tree, your next mistake could be your last. Many people just don't know they are not ready to do certain things. Maybe they realize that they are not going to successfully ride down the street on a unicycle on their first try, but using a chainsaw, that's gotta be in the genes. Its not, but the human propensity for self delusion is boundless. There is no substitute for experience or good judgement.
Good judgement is key. It also helps to be a natural climber and too user.

You fired up that saw and it definitely sounded like an echo.
it's kinda got a different distinct sound compared to other brands of saws to me husqvarna's sound like dirt bikes and echo has a "deeper voice"
Just by sound(I get that video distorts things a little) you couldn't tell it was a 25cc saw it sounds the same as my 50cc, the difference came when you got into your cuts.
Pretty solid review though, I like when someone just sticks to the product at hand and doesnt interject a ton of personal opinion or "views" that goes a long way....
Those are some good observations on the sound it makes. I recall thinking my big Husqvarna 371XP sounded like a dirt bike the first time I heard it.. This little saw is one my favorites. It's handy to bring along firewood cutting projects.

I love this saw for a wide variety of tree projects. We had more storm damage trees this summer and this was my go-to as well as my CS-501P

13:00 IOW, the Compression Release is timed to WORK! Sounds good but hey ...
I'm an old soreback, from working in the woods. I like the 5.2#, 3/8x12" but for longer reach I'd take a longer, 1/4" chain and bar even if I had to go custom on the bar. There's a rear-handle available for balance if we can tolerate the extra 4-5 oz or so. We only use the far end of the bar anyway. It's not like we'll ever use it to beaver through a 36" Doug Fir.
I really like this saw, but it would be interesting to test out the rear handle version. I'd probably go with a 14" bar on a rear handle.

I lost use of my entire right arm extremity, but I am looking around for a small chainsaw to have on hand when I am overlanding and driving off road trails. I may sometimes come across fallen tree, branches, or brush that I may need to remove to continue down a trail. Any input from anyone???
This is very light and the manufacturers say it's a 2 hand saw. If you watch professional arborists, they use top handled saws with 1 hand. You could look into a Milwaukee M12 Fuel Hatchet Chainsaw. That's even lighter, but a smaller bar.

I saw a lamberjack with this kind chainsaw and it was a petrol one, it's more for having it in one hand so you can climb a tree and quickly cut off certain branches before then you cut the whole tree with a big chainsaw
Yes, it's lightweight for climbing, but powerful for taking the limbs off. An overall great saw.

I one hand-cut with all of my saws since 1984. Most of the time it's for reach and efficiency.
I see lots of tree pros using one hand for limbing. The chain on this one is designed for less kickbacks, from what I remember reading.

I still remember how much work cutting branches with a medium saw was! and cutting large diameter wood is easier with a bigger chainsaw!

It's a great little saw. They introduced another model called the TN version which is supposed to have less chatter. I'll have that on here pretty soon after testing it out.
I wish this saw came with a smaller gauge bar and chain.. would be much easier for the saw to keep a high rev while cutting. Echo should take a page out of the Stihl top handle saws.

For people watching this video, very well done, but to critique slightly: cut with the meat of the bar when you can, not towards the tip. Obviously you don't want to risk digging in the dirt, but if ur able to use the weight of the saw while cutting its much easier work. User fatigue is the #1 reason for chainsaw accidents.. even though this saw is quite the featherweight! Just my 2 cents
Thanks, that's great advice! This saw is so small and compact, that it almost requires more safety precautions.
That is right
While that helps if the chain isn't great and when the item to be cut is well within reach, it is actually the opposite most of the time. The force and stress to the user increases the further you have to reach because of torque. Hold the saw close to your torso and then hold it on a reach. You'll feel the clear difference.
Another very popular chainsaw youtuber says to use a long bar and "stand up and buck" for a somewhat similar reason. Don't add any of your body weight or arm weight when you don't have to.
A sharp chain and correct raker height means very little force is needed for the tool to do its own work. The part of the bar used won't matter much at all in that case. If you need more than the weight of the bar, you'd reduce fatigue by putting on a sharp chain and sharpen the first one later.

@@scaf_007vs3 No disrespect intended. I'm simply saying that having the power head up against the cut causes more reach on the part of the user in many cases, which takes more energy to do. To be quite honest, I used to do the same quite often, for years even, until an older log truck driver (former logger/faller) convinced me to try what I'm describing when limbing. It really did help me reduce fatigue, and all of his guys said the same. Now that I'm old I help others try it too. It works for those that work with me as well. Although it works for me, it might not work for you and I can respect that. If someone did that on our crew, I would tell them what my option was but if they preferred their own way, I'd be ok with that so long as it wasn't causing any problems. I would caution with my suggestion you always have to be cognizant of the tip location to avoid kickback, but It hasn't been an issue for any of us here since we know to avoid the upper tip.
I'd like to get one just because it's so light but to me the best echo climbing saw is the cs 341
I haven't run the CS 341, but it looks like a nice top handle saw.

The ECHO saw is 25cc vs 35. It also weighs 5.2lbs vs 8.16lbs for the Stihl. I think the ECHO saw has plenty of power, especially for an arborist or tree climber.

I have one of these saws with a 14 inch bar,, :expensive though it is a bit better than my CS-310.

Amsoil Saber. Synthetic 100:1 mix ratio. Far superior to any old school 50:1 mix. Been using it in my saws for 40 some years. Phenomenal, noticeable difference in performance and equipment longevity.
Interesting, I've never heard of anyone running that blend. I haven't tried Amsoil yet, but I hear it's good stuff.

Yes, I agree that this has sticker shock pricing. It's an amazing saw though. ECHO has cheaper options that will work for you.
You get what you pay for, and as a professional, it really pays dividends having an ultra lightweight and portable saw. Most of your pro grade saws have magnesium cases and metal parts where a consumer grade will have plastic parts.

It is absolutely one hand saw. The whole purpose of the top handle is that it allows you to hold a branch while cutting it.. I've had one since they became available and I love the saw.

While top handle can facilitate one handed use, the primary purpose is to reduce the length of the power head so that a climber does not have awkward arm movements when so close to a trunk and limbs to be cut. One handed use is mostly discouraged, and you can still experience a major benefit to two handed use when you look at it that way. Climbers are much slower to reposition the saw with rear handles, so that's why a top handle is so beneficial even during two handed use.

I recommend getting the newer version, the 2511TN. It cuts the fastest and smoothest.
Compare that Echo 58v electric to this small 25cc Arborist Saw. They are similar in price, electric is more with extra battery.
That's a good idea however, the 58v is much heavier.
I bought a corded saw for $30. I know the cord is inconvenient, but man you save a fortune!

Gave ya a thumbs up but ya missed a few thing's. The air intake is not a "fine screen", that is an option that bolt's on. The recoil handle double as a fuel or oil cap wrench, try it. Last is the chains they come with suck, best thing is to swap sprockets and bars but if ya don't want to do that get the felling dog and bolt it on. At least it keeps it from jumping if you bury the bar while cutting. You can own two of these or 355 for the price of the Stihl 201 which I hear nothing but bad shit on. Don't believe any of your rear handle echo"Pro Saws" are going to hang with a Husqvarna or Stihl.

The ECHO website shows that the fine grid starter cover prevents debris ingestion. I'm thinking about getting the felling dog. Thanks for all the advice!

Great little climbing saw it feels like a toy but cuts very well. Cost me $630 after tax. Excellent balance but overpriced handle a 14 inch bar no problem if you let the saw do the work
Ted Mix I found the price online in the $400 price range. Did you buy it here in the states? The saw definitely is made for tree climbing and limbing.

Damn, back in the late 90's I used to buy Echo top handled saws for about $240. No match for my Stihl 020T, but good enough to get the job done.

For some reason the Echo website makes no mention of the HP this saw puts out. That makes me nervous about getting one because I thought that would be a bragging point! I've seen info online that it produces 3.5 hp which is hard to believe but if someone has sacred knowledge about this saw please share.
Install a 1/4 pitch bar and chain kit if you want something that resembles performance out of this saw.
Great video! Trying to convince my hard headed mom to buy gas instead of electric and a mile of extension cord on the acreage. She don't like gas because she thinks they're impossible to start.
I've found some older ones hard to start. If you use non-ethanol fuel (Rec-Gas) and ECHO Red Armor Oil, you're going to always start it within 5 pulls on average I bet.

Yes and no, the bigger saws like the cs 620p does but the 355t and 2511t have outboard clutches

I haven't ever noticed how long it runs on a single tank, but seems decent. One of my other saws, a 371XP seems to cut just enough rounds to fill my 6' full size pickup. It always seems to sputter on the last log or so.
is there anything quieter? i go camping where i should not be camping and any chainsaw noise would be bad...
I've reviewed a battery powered ECHO and Milwaukee chainsaw that is much quieter. Someday, I'll have to compare them in a video.

Picked up one of these after losing my 330T. (Don't ask).
So what I notice is that it "chatters" when cutting. Like in this video at 10:30. My 330t did not do that but was a bigger saw. Maybe its just the light weight? Not sure really but I find it annoying.
Also my 330t had the choke and kill switch all at the thumb with no "primer bulb" that can go bad. In my opinion a way better design. I never had starting issues with that saw.
So now on this saw I have to find and push primer, then go to other side to flip on the choke before pulling. Why would they make this more complex? I'm confused by it. The 330t (which they don't make anymore) was just better with the single control for everything. I step back in my opinion. oh well.
I do love the light weight. Not sure yet how long the small tank is going to work but will see when I really put it to work. Also hope that single bar nut is enough to hold the bar so I'm not constantly having to retighten chain. Time will tell.
I looked at my video to see the chatter you're talking about. I'm guessing it's the weight and possibly the type of wood. I was cutting an elm that had been standing dead for awhile. When I use the saw, I don't find that chatter to happen all that often. I do however own a battery pole saw that chatters all the time and it's an issue for me. My other 2 pole saws don't seem to do that. 🤷♂️

@@MarkThomasBuilder - General rule of thumb is 3 to 4 tanks of fuel before you work it hard. And make sure you let it idle for 45 to 60 seconds even if it's 80° outside, it allows the piston and cylinder ample time to be thoroughly warmed up so you don't have to worry about having any smoking or lack of power issues due to low compression. And that 2511 really wakes up with a muffler mod and some tuning. And if you really want that bad boy to blow your socks off do a big bore kit and that sucker will be screaming and wanting that more aggressive chain!
A tip for breaking in any new chainsaw is to run a richer fuel/oil mix. The extra lubrication will help to wear down those imperfections more gradually. Chainsaws are used under heavy loads so you don't want to put a lot of strain on the engine during the break in period.
