    I worked in a machine shop while going to school, and did a lot of tapping of threads. these taps are ok, but the tap and die wrenches are crap and the dies are round. it seams like all the cheep or affordable sets use the same cheap cast pot metal or Chineseium tap wrenches and round dies. Round Dies slip in the wrench when threading and wear out the set screw fairly quick. all the cheep sets are like this. Eastwood, Hazard Freight, Craftsman, even Tekton, which is one of my favorite tool companies, are all probably made by the same factory in china. Good Dies are hex shaped and do rely just a set screw to hold the die in position while tapping. using a set screw to be the point of force, rounds off the set screws allowing round dies slip in the cheap wrenches, and the cheep pot metal wrenches also break really easy. Irwin makes some of the taps out there, but they cost about twice as much has these cheep sets. Another great choice is Gear Wrench, again its about twice as much, but they will save you untold hours of frustration over the cheap sets and broken tap wrenches or broken taps. if you are on a budget, Home Depot sell a 77 piece kit that is make by Apex Tool (the same company that makes Gear Wrench) and is identical to the smaller Gear Wrench set, but less money. I normally love Eastwood products, like the QST30/60. it was truly innovative for weekend warriors or hobbyists. I wish they would do the same for some hand tools like taps and dies. so for me its a hard pass on these.
    Eastwood Guy in the video also fail to mention that you will need a full set of drill bits in Letter, Number and Fractional sizes to properly use it. for example, a 3/8 - 16 threaded hole requires a 5/16th drill bit were 3/8 - 24 thread hole requires a Letter "Q" size drill bit. and a 1/4-20 inch threaded hole requires a number "7" drill bit. also when cutting threads with a Die, the metal rod needs to be a certain diameter. this is why the guy in the video was struggling with the tap and die wrench. the rod was slightly too big.

    GearWrench complete tap and die set. BEST investment I ever made. The ratchet function has already saved me from an almost impossible tight space.

    Great video and great presenting skills. Metric is sooooo much easier. Bloody English and Yanks. My first time that I will need to use a tap/threader. Pitch gauge...nice.

    Would have been great if you would have actually provided the chart that gives you the drill sizes for each size tap.

    Do you have to drill it out to use a tap or will it just fix the threads already there?

    • @eastwoodco
      @eastwoodco  Před 2 lety

      Both. You can tap a freshly drilled hole or you can "chase" threads with a tap.

    The better dies are the hex ones, you can spin them with a socket, easier to hold in a vice to clean bolt threads up.

    I've got a good set but most of the stuff I'm seeing is cheap garbage not even worth spending anything on. And then the old good brands when you go back and read the reviews it makes you wonder..

    You just said you you use the dies to make the female threads,dies are not used for making female threads,that's taps are for,a tap is used for making female threads and a die is used for making male threads.
