The Sad Story Behind Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

The Moonlight Sonata is one of Beethoven's greatest works. It was dedicated to his student, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi whom he was in love with. Sadly he was forbidden to marry her as he was without rank.
It was the poet Ludwig Rellstab who nicknamed the sonata several years after Beethoven's death.
To this day, it remains a symbol of heartache.
