Comic Genius right there - alongside Spike Milligan and Robin Williams. Still making us laugh after all these years. Have to love the brilliance of the Internet - giving younger people like me the opportunity to experience the humour of these brilliant comedians years before I was old enough to appreciate them. I now know exactly why my Mum and Dad would be in hysterics watching these guys. Thanks for sharing!
Back when the licence fee was worth the money. We have just a few like Peter Sellers today. Some of the most gifted people with immeasurable talent and creativity are tortured souls with eccentricities. But Peter's performance here, has probably never been surpassed since. And he was most definitely multi-talented.
Back then we had three channels. Talent was concentrated, quality was high, rubbish very rarely slithered through the commissioning process. Then the Tories pushed through deregulation 30 years ago to weaken the traditional broadcasters (especially the BBC) under the spurious claim of choice and we ended up with the sh%tshow we have today.
I have a couple of diary entries from 1980. They both take up a single page and there is a 3rd page that follows. The first page: Peter Sellers 24th July 1980 The 2nd page: John Lennon 8th December 1980 The 3rd page: All my heroes are gone now It was a very very sad year for me then and 35 years latter there is still a hole in my heart...
Possibly there have been others as good at performing different accents as Sellers, but it's the apparent ease that he slips in and out of them all that is unique and very very funny.
Ah the lat e great Peter Sellars. A tortured soul but one of the funniest and most amazing actors on the planet. Such a shame he died so early and the world lost someone so special. I watched just about every Parkinson but I don't remember this interview. It made me laugh a lot to watch this but it also made me feel sad because it was obvious that he was someone who was misunderstood and maybe quite lonely really.
This is one of the very few videos I go back to year after year after year. While the genius and the depth of his talent is for all to see, I always come away feeling so sad for Peter. Although his recalling of stories of his father and grandfather are humorous, his eyes tell a different story. I can’t help but think he could never please some people whose approval he craved. When the talk turned personal, again his eyes show hurt and disappointment in himself, but the words that come out of his mouth are always intended to elicit laughter. It’s spellbinding and heartbreaking all wrapped up in an amazing showcase of pure talent. I put him at the absolute top of comedic actors, along with Jerry Lewis and Jim Carey. Their abilities to seamlessly transform from one character to the next is unmatched. Lewis and Carey also appear so lonely and almost tortured souls. How is it that the funniest of people often never seem to find what they are really looking for??
@@TD75 Hi What is your definition of “ completely screwed up ?” I saw Jim Carey at Yuk Yuks in Toronto when he was 18. He was just an incredible diamond in the rough. Since then he went on to become the highest paid actor in THE WORLD. I loved Peter Sellers, but he was never close to the popularity of Jim Carey and believe me he had issues. This was pre social media so there is some apples to apples to that. Post social media, Jim Carey has gone to even higher highs but also some lows as well. Do you for one second think you have the remotest idea of waking up every day to negative stories written by people you have never met saying you were an asshole at a place you have never been to ? No you don’t, and neither does almost everyone else on the planet earth. So with tremendous fame and fortune comes all of this noise that is non stop. Answering the same dumb questions over and over and over while trying to be courteous. There is a reason they say be careful about what you wish for. I’m sure he wanted to put his amazing talents on display, and he has. Think of how many people, young and old, that he has made laugh hysterically. I have never seen him be rude or full of himself in any of the interviews he’s done or shows he has been on. I have never met him so that is all I can go on. I live in Burlington Ontario, where Jim and his family lived for a while, and am aware of the storey of his Dad Percy being laid off and the economic and emotional struggles the family had after that. So my question is who are you and what good have you done to question someone that I’m sure you have never met. I look forward to that lame response.
The greatest performance that never was: Peter Sellers as John Lennon. Likely Lennon was copping Sellers in some of this celebrated moments, but the likeness at times is uncanny.
That’s what I thought when I began seeing this interview. They were both manic depressives, almost ADHD. Not being critical, just being observant. I adore both men and wished that they lived longer than they did. They were highly intelligent and had so much more to offer to this sad and dysfunctional world.
The quality of his impersonations reveals the depth and capacity for observation he possessed! I suspect he would have been an excellent scientific researcher. Also, despite suddenly being asked to instantly switch from actively entertaining the audience to discussing difficult personal introspection regarding his failed marriages Peter transitions gracefully revealing the integrity of a self actualized man; as he states the truth regarding how difficult he is to live with, even taking responsibility for his infidelity. That is not the behavior of a man lost in his characters, as he is often represented as being, there.
Robin Williams is another clear example of this, actually i see many similarities between the two actors! A sense of feeling the need to constantly please and gain some form of acceptance.
@@garymorgan3314 I disagree. Sellers was renowned for being able to improvise on set. He was alleged to even be able to conjure new characters at the drop of a hat

Have to love the brilliance of the Internet - giving younger people like me the opportunity to experience the humour of these brilliant comedians years before I was old enough to appreciate them. I now know exactly why my Mum and Dad would be in hysterics watching these guys. Thanks for sharing!
I always loved Peter Sellers...well done Parkie...showing us what a genius he was..🌞
He had mastered the art of conversation and story telling, genius.
My rule of Television: The total amount of quality remains the same irrespective of the number of channels.
complete and utter brilliance there will never be another .....
Brought a tear to my eye when he played the ukulele. Proper genius.
I found I remembered all the words. Sang along.
Thank you for this upload. Peter was without peer. Sadly missed.
I have a couple of diary entries from 1980. They both take up a single page and there is a 3rd page that follows.
The first page: Peter Sellers 24th July 1980
The 2nd page: John Lennon 8th December 1980
The 3rd page: All my heroes are gone now
It was a very very sad year for me then and 35 years latter there is still a hole in my heart...
Absolutely admire PS really miss this immensely talented man 😂
Certainly got a lot of bang for your buck with Peter Sellers, amaaaazing!
I love these classic Parkinson interviews form the 70s , there's something so magical about them ...
Mortimer Before political correctness had got a grip on Western culture, so people were more open and free to express themselves.
TV was for adults back then. Now it's to keep unemployed people in a constant state of "duuuuuuuuh".
Amazing. All those chord changes and I don't think he looked down at the fretboard once ! Great stuff.
He looks happiest making music . . .

Hi
What is your definition of “ completely screwed up ?”
I saw Jim Carey at Yuk Yuks in Toronto when he was 18.
Sellers is a legend. You can kind of tell that Robin Williams was influenced heavily by him.
I Don't Have Man Boobs Kind of also followed the whole depressing life, died young thing too :(
Not in the same league.
Also Sellers not an improvised.
Imo..
That’s what I thought when I began seeing this interview. They were both manic depressives, almost ADHD. Not being critical, just being observant. I adore both men and wished that they lived longer than they did. They were highly intelligent and had so much more to offer to this sad and dysfunctional world.
When Peter Sellers acts silly people laugh ,when I act silly people roll their eyes.

I'm so glad that I found this. Absolutely amazing and brilliant! Genius may be an overused word but Peter Sellers was definitely one!!
Peter Sellers was a genius and left us too soon, and so did Robin Williams, another talented genius. They made the world a better place.
Nobody could touch this fella for impersonations, Such a talent.
Robin Williams was a close best
I like what you did at the end there..."being, there." One of the best movies of all.
Once every six months I come back to this. If I was a psycologist I would prescribe this video to people suffering depression
Robin Williams is another clear example of this, actually i see many similarities between the two actors! A sense of feeling the need to constantly please and gain some form of acceptance.
ALAN BOOSH Yeah i see that now. Pity both of them led such troubled, sad lives.
Difference, a big one, is that Williams almost never acts. Sellers, contrariwise, is no improviser.
@@garymorgan3314 I disagree. Sellers was renowned for being able to improvise on set. He was alleged to even be able to conjure new characters at the drop of a hat
@@fergusdonaghy3124 That's interesting Fergus. I wonfer if he "had these ready" or whether, like Cook, he flew.
My favourite of his is 'Being There' where he reissuing the self-indulgence.
Ta for food for thought!
The"Laurence" skit so brilliant. Alec Guiness walk and talk just amazing. Thanks for posting.
Sellers er bare helt fantastisk, tragisk med hans fortidlige bortgang.
