It’s a great vid, but orioles. No. 😂
Love that based on a comment made on your page you stepped it up to try it again and to compare it. Great video
+LeBoof thank you! We thought it was about the closest we’ll come to being like mythbusters! Lol
i know that the person that made the comment knows what she is talking about and they are aware as well is my guess. her channel is a great place to learn costs affective ways to make crafting supplies.she would only have meant to help them and I hear they better understand pigment in this video, we like all that strive to save us money.good luck everyone
You can trust Pink Poodle. She’s a craft queen and total badass when it comes to diy art supplies.
We did! And she was right! We actually might be using her advice again soon 😉
I like how the woman was trying to be kind to the ugly plate. very sweet!
Jess is kind to everything
I used permanent marker and alcohol to make alcohol inks and I've had mine for a while now and they have been pretty good
We tried this in another venue dep and they worked pretty well
When you use cheap acrylic paint, the paint has a filler in it and not pure pigment of paint. Therefore it is always be cloudy. If you tried to use an expensive watercolor paint that is pure pigment you would get a clearer outcome.
Totally!
Great point👍
Thank You, Someone gave me that advice about high quality water colors as dyes, but I had totally forgotten it.
Have you tried RIT fabric dye?
@TammyAnderson-ob7sh I think we did in this video
Can you use these to make ALCOHOL INKS?
czcams.com/video/YIoyfkCpa84/video.html
A little tip. You can drop 2 BB's from a BB gun in the bottles to help mix while you shake them up. You want 2 because 1 can block the hole were hardly any thing comes out.
Awesome thank you for the tip!!
Great job! You both keep teaching us. At the same time you are learning as you go. Thanks
+Kelly Ulrich thank you we’re trying
THIS IS THE TUTORIAL I WAS SEARCHING!! Omg, you don't know how much time I expended looking for this hahaha
Nice video!!!!
@avendani7642 I have an updated video with better info! Here’s the link

Great tutorial, thank you. I also thank you for having details of colours used..
Thank you so much
i typed in youtube how to make your own ink, then i have a video of making ink using ink, very nice lol
Thanks funny, hope you find what you’re looking for
Thank you very much..I have benefited a lot from the experience
I've only seen two of your videos and I have to say I am impressed. I'm impressed that you are willing to try things, accept constructive criticism and try again. THAT is how we learn. Life lessons aren't learned from stagnation.
The commenter was right. Acrylics have a plastic-like binder. Alcohol is a solvent. They two don't mix. The results were from pigment, but the solids were separated out.
Thank you for showing how to try, learn and keep on going!
Blessings!
Su
Thank you so much! We’ve since learned we needed to use the epson ink refills because they’re alcohol based!
@@MakeShapeCreate Ahhh! That sounds like a winner. I have some, but not Epson. I can let you know how it turns out.
Terrific!
Great job! You both keep teaching us.
+Mr Tí Gaming thank you
you can also use methylene blue dye powder, or malachite green dye ppwder, mixed with alcohol
I don’t know, I tried using mica powder in another video but it didn’t work great
czcams.com/video/8WP78L_kK-A/video.html
Wow 😯 great 👍 attempt. Beats company made prices. I had planned to do this but you beat me to this. Thank You 🙏
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Your blue is a mix with titanium white in it. Try Thalo, or other more concentrated colors. The white has heavy particles that can clump and change other characteristics. White is also opaque.
👍🏻
Try this experiment with the Epson ink refill. I was told by a printer rep that Epson inks are alcohol based and that's why the ink dries so fast. This was an HP rep that told me this and he mentioned that HP ink is dye based (as you can see on the bottle of ink you have the link for in the description).
Oh wow we definitely will thank you
I have hippo sublimation ink for my hp2720. Would that work?? 🤔🤔
OMG! Thank you for that fantastic piece of info. I've always wondered why after using my epsom printer like once or twice the ink dried out! Im not a big printer user, so few and far between uses makes for dried ink for me!! That's priceless info my friend!! Huge thanks!!

We just made an updated version of this video here czcams.com/video/WFzqwtB-8kI/video.html
Thank you ❤
This video is very helpful
Glad it helped!
Thanks for sharing. I learnt alot.
We have an updated video that would be more helpful
We made The Perfect ALCOHOL INKS!!!
czcams.com/video/WFzqwtB-8kI/video.html
I like you guys yup have fun with each other and that’s cool and thanks for doing the experiment so I don’t have to
Glad you liked it! Check out the video this and next week! Think they have a similar feel!
Would the paint work better with a different type of paint, like watercolor discs or Tempura?
I think tempura paint would have a similar problem with the alcohol breaking it down and not truly mixing with it! Watercolors I’m not sure, the disc are a good idea! Might have to try that in the future
You could use the paint and alcohol as a effects liquid,
What about color pigments used for toning wall paint, for example? That could work and they are really cheap.
It just depends if they’re water based or not
Best video I have seen so far
Thank you but we just made an updated version! Hopefully it’s more helpful
czcams.com/video/WFzqwtB-8kI/video.html
awesome!
Thank you!
Sorry, i have several questions.
How much alcohol did you use in the final one? How much bang for the buck in the final option if you were to use double the quantity of ink than you used, to make the colour match with the store bought alcohol ink. & In comparison to the store bought alcohol ink bottle, what's the price difference then finally? & Finally did you use it on yugo paper and what were the results in comparison with store bought bottle?
I believe it’s in the video and the description! I believe it was like 3/4 of an oz off the top of my head! I’m sure adding more printer ink would “enrich them more”!
Thanks for sharing the detailed experiments! Will the inks ( the vivid printer inks) work on cotton fabric? Just curious if you tried that yet.
It should!
question, I was trying to sell some unused old ink that was for an old computer can you extract the ink using the needles like you would refill ink cartridges. then i don't have to worry about wasting printer ink and reuse it to make me alcohol inks
Not sure, I think it’s just be easier to buy the refill lol
Can thia be used on alcohol markers? For refilling marker
I’m not sure, the printer ink itself might work for that
hi guys just found your channel subscribed immediately, great job, I have a question along the same lines i want to make some alcohol ink but i only have sublimation ink, do you think you could do a test on that and see if there is any difference and then maybe heat it up to see if the colour changes at all, thanks tracy
+Tracy stephens-wood thanks you! We’ll definitely look into that! We always have idea boiling
@@MakeShapeCreate cool cant wait
Hi, Will surgical spirit work for the alcohol? Thanks
I don’t know! We used hospital grade alcohol that was 99%
just thought also if you wanted to fill those bottles how much of the alcohol that you use would you fill say about three quarters of the bottle.
We used 1/2 oz of alcohol to the measurements we included in the video and the description
Awesome idea. Will this homemade ink last on projects? Thank You 🙏

What was the name of the second stuff you use to make the other colors I love it the second stuff it's beautiful
The printer ink? The link for it is in the description!
Hey guys great video! I'm really interested in watching if you have a video on how to make a sinker with white acrylic by chance. Or what are your thoughts?
I don’t know what this is? Please explain!!
@@MakeShapeCreate artists use an alcohol ink called a sinker to get the colors to move into epoxy.
Piñata Blanco Blanco is am excellent example. Some brands even call it a sinker but I guess it only comes in white.
I've done all those alcohol inks so thanks for the recipe..very handy and not available anywhere else. Any ideas how to make white or how it's made as you can buy it. I want pastels and the colour wheel says about adding white. Thanks

No thank you❤️❤️
I need help I cannot find the answer anywhere maybe you guys would know LOL can I use resin dye the liquid kind for alcohol ink just that and alcohol?
I don’t know, probably.
I mean I would think so also do you think it would be about the same ratio as the alcohol and the printer ink maybe or more dye I have searched this for 3 days now and I've had no results anywhere LOL
@@mistitull5423 you probably won’t need as much dye as it would more concentrated than the ink will be!
And estimated ratio for a 1 oz bottle of alcohol to ink
Sorry my bad 5 ml bottle had to double check what I ordered already bottle-wise LOL
He was so nice, but every piece of advice he gave her was 180° opposite of what she should have done when mixing the colors. 🤣 I was cracking up because I could hear in her voice that she was thinking "ummm really?? I don't know about that, but okay.. I'll do it." 😂🤣😂🤣 She was spot on though with her natural instincts with color mixing.
Cool video, you two. You can tell you two get along great!
Thank you so much! We do she’s great!
You think this ink would work being used refilling ink cartridges for a printer?? All your stuff was vibrant and fresh! beautifully done. The two of you are a lovely couple, I can feel in your video the respect and love for one another! keep on keeping on with your crafty selves

@@MakeShapeCreate Oh my goodness...are you kidding me...ya'll are a hoot, so glad I found ya'll!!!
We are too!!
Stick with the printer ink but add a binding agent. Then it wont separate, and it will stick! There is a binder sold with alcohol inks , it's just clear. Then you add some to the inks your making.
What would be a binder? Glycerine?
I’m watching this because I have got to make orange today! Yikes! I have a binding agent in my shop. So thanks you guys and Charley G! Fingers crossed!
I hope this helps
@@JT-mq6oc yes 2-3 drops glycerine to 1-2 oz IPA 99% add ink to desired depth of color.

Is it suitable for resin artwork?
Yes!
I brought some cheap Alcohol ink , they do not work on tiles. Is there any way to make them better? more usable?
You can try scuffing up the surface before adding the alcohol inks, but you’ll need to seal them afterwards
Can I fill this in alcohol markers?
I don’t know, I’ve never used them!

Can i use this inks in inktank printer
If it’s the ink that is used for that printer sure!
@@MakeShapeCreatehow can I make optical variable ink
Have you ever tried liquid candle dye to make alcohol ink? It isn't water base
We haven’t
Great comparison! You work well together. It would be interesting to know how much the homemade ink costs against the manufactured ink? 🥰
That’s a hard question because the alcohol is cheap normally, and the printer ink is like $15, the little bottles are less than $10 for 30! Rough estimate is the the homemade ones cost about 80¢ or less to make and you have more of everything to make more if you want, verses buying that is a dollar to $5 and up! Thanks for watching! We have an updated version of this coming out in a few weeks!!!
Can I use denatured alcohol?
I believe you can as long as it’s over 90% alcohol
@@MakeShapeCreate lol yeah it is... it says "fuel" on the can...
This is the link to the printer ink! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077QVSKD5/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B077QVSKD5&linkCode=as2&tag=makeshapecrea-20&linkId=c5d258c4da4ef18cb9ad46fbff7d66d3
You can take the ink cartridges put of cheap markers and sissolve into alcohol as well. Just use as little alcohol as humanly possible....u can always add more, but if there's too much alcohol it wont spread properly
If you want your alcohol inks to adhere better and remain glossy after they dry add a few drops (2-4) of glycerine to the alcohol and ink solution!
Thank you so much
I strain all my ink. Use the little coffee filters that go with a Kruig.
I made some with food coloring. It's not to bad
Nice!
How can i make optical variable ink
I’m not sure what that is
Love the whole idea of making these paints. I got lost when you pulled out those bigger bottles. Are they large acrylic paints? Also, when you put that you added 3 ml's of a particular paint it didn't look like you added a full 3 ml's to the alcohol. I am a nurse and 3 ml's would fill the entire syringe. Just a bit lost on that part. Is it more like 3 drops? Thanks for making this great video. Love you guys. Also, is any type of acrylic ink good to make these alcohol inks, or is any type of acrylic paint, cheap or costly, fine to use for making these alcohol paints. I so thank you both for sharing your expertise with me. I can't wait to get started. Again, thanks a bunch!
Those were the syringes that came with the ink refill kit, they aren’t medical ones! The large bottle were printer ink refills not paint! Love you too!
@@MakeShapeCreate thank you for your response! So when you guys say 3 ml's is it truly a full 3 milliliters? A standard syringe, like one I would use to give a shot is a full 3 cc's So finally, I want to know if I should really add a full 3 milliliters of alcohol per the directions or a few drops? I apologize if I sound dingy but I just want to get it right when I make these wonderful alcohol paints. You guys are funny, love your interactions and of course your response. Take care and take it easy.
Yes these are the actual measurements we used! You might add a little extra to make them more vivid

I’m sure there is! We’ll need to look into it!
Maybe white acrylic paint? 💕🐶🐶🐶🇬🇧🇬🇧
We actually did try this in our first attempt but we have an idea for white alcohol ink😜
Maybe try making it with a tube of titanium white gouache???
We can use Bathik dye power for this
Not sure what that is!
I was wondering if you could use Rit dye, which is what the batik powder is, but it also comes in liquid. Do you think that would work?
Not sure but that would probably be more expensive
Can you make alcohol inks from EYESHADOW (Old eyeshadow you don't use? How much to the alcohol inks?) Thanks much love from Riv
I’m not sure! Give it a try
Hi Guys! I was so excited to try this after watching your demo. I mixed the 91% alcohol and the inks per your instructions. The color values looked beautiful. But that's where the beauty unfortunately ended for me :-(. Even though I shook each printer ink before using AND shook each alcohol ink I made, they granulated a lot...esp the purple. I did some research and learned that printer ink is now made with tiny plastic particles instead of dye. I think that may be the problem. So going cheaper backfired but it was worth a try.
We have a link to the ink we used in the description! Sorry that you had a bad first try!
sounds like you got pigment ink instead of dye ink. epson dura-Brite and Claria inks, for example, are pigment. most Canon inks are dye based, although they do make a couple of pigment inks. (many of their individual ink tank printers have a separate pigment black used for text) if you get a printed sheet wet and the ink runs, it's dye. if it stays put, it's pigment. so, double check for pigment vs dye when purchasing.
how do you make a white alcohol ink?
We are still not sure! I tried here with so so results

They totally do!!

No idea
Can you use these in Resin? 😮I tried only using acrylic paint before as a newbie with Resin and turned out the acrylic paint didn’t dry?😂
Absolutely! We actually did on a few projects!!
Why do you use a plate instead of a piece of paper? the materials are for art work, right? Great video, thanks!!!
I’ve just always seen them used on non porous surfaces!
@@MakeShapeCreate Yeah !! I am just learning about this amazing technique and you are right. Paper is not the right surface. I didn´t know it five minutes ago haha Thanks !

Where would one buy bottled printer ink. How costly is bottled printer ink?
I get them on Amazon, here’s the one we got in our updated video!
amzn.to/3JeSafI
how i make alcohal ink for inkjet printer
No idea lol
Try testing it on Yupo paper next time, as we get no sense of how the 'inks' you've created behave in a real piece of artwork... Blobbing it on a plate doesn't really help! 😂 The colour is only _part_ of the measure of what makes a good alcohol ink, tbh. How it blends, spreads and mixes with other inks - essentally, how it behaves on the substrate - is also key.
We’ve used them in our resin projects too! Just not in that video!
All the videos I've seen so far use Sharpies... is there a reason you are not using them?
We’ve never tried sharpies, I don’t think they’d be very vivid but might be wrong
I would say because there is usually more then one way to go about making something . Just comes down preference and cost .
I'm a graffiti writer and just happened to stumble upon this and I just wanted to say that acrylic paints are water based and you cant dissolve it in alcohol
but other than that good vidya
Thank you!
can you guys make a video of making an ink which can be viewed through sun glasses, is it made with glow in the dark pigment
Glow in the dark stuff is usually powder pigment vs liquid or alcohol based so it wouldn’t dissolve I believe!

Try adding a few drops of glycerin. I know the blending solution needs glycerin, so the inks probably do too. Also, you used WAYYYYY too little ink. The colors should start out pretty intense.
Thank you for the tips!!!
What are alcohol inks?
+F-ZEROKID they are an alcohol based ink that is designed to dry pretty fast! You can use them with acrylic paint to get cool reactions but most people use them in resin to get cool effects!
Can we use 71% alcohol ?
I think you need to use 90% or more

I know you used the paper plates because they were inexpensive, but if you want to see real results, you should also use some quality paper to see how your creations look there too. Just my opinion.
In a later video we tried yupo paper
And mica power
And mica powder?
If you want to make a more stable product use vodka as your alcohol you will get a copic result.

Looked like you were using 50% alcohol. That means the other 50% was water. Now try using higher alcohol content. 70%, 91%, and 99%. You will get a better solution the higher the alcohol content. Should get rid of those little clomps of pigment that don't dissolve. You will also have different solutions for different effects. There is also distilled alcohol. Primary colors are Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow not red, blue, yellow like we were taught in school.
No it was 99% medical grade

Using acrylic paints are a no no. Over time the water will separate. When that happens the only thing you can do is let it air but then the isopropanol/alcohol will evaporate. Resin and water dint mix well.... Pointless.. only way to make your own inks is to use high quality make-up 😉😉😉😉😉😉 LOL I'm not saying. you're thinning with the wrong solvent for acrylic, it's curdling on you
What should we use?
@@MakeShapeCreate distilled water. you can thin with higher solvents but if you wanna avoid all the toxic stuff DISTILLED water is the best move.
straight acrylic from the craft store will curdle with alcohol based because it's water based and it will separate if not immediately over time. you can get liquitex mediums to thin it or use pouring medium but they affect dry time
@@MakeShapeCreate I'd say if you wanna try making an alcohol base, try denatured alcohol and acetone but WEAR PROTECTION
