    This fight wasn't close from the first minute. James was too heavy to keep fighting at 168 and Roy was probably the best 168 lb'er ever. This fight was his coming out party as the best fighter in the world for a decade. He was just incredible and if he'd have retired after the Ruiz fight or even the first Tarver fight, I think he'd be seen by many as the GOAT.

Tarver just juiced the fuck out of his win and even used roys name ot glorify his career knowing roy was in shit shape

      Toney is still fighting as well, and has a fight this year. Like Jones, he is a shadow of his former self; yes, jones relied more on his athletic ability than toney, but it goes to show you that when both lost their athletic ability, both of their performances went downhill fast. Both Jones and Toney need to retire, way past their primes.

    This is the fight in which I thought I might be watching the greatest fighter of all time in terms of pure ability in Jones. His speed and athleticism was without equal with great power to boot. With that being said Toney was out of shape for this fight which is too bad because I believe he may have had the superior all around skills and is a defensive all time great. Roy in his prime at 168lbs beats anyone and forget about when he was at middleweight. Nobody in the history of boxing beats him at that weight including Sugar Ray Robinson who's best weight was probably 147lbs. That's not a knock in SRR who's the greatest P4P fighter ever but I'd take Jones at middleweight in a fight between the two.

      I agree

    • @carolinareaper2063
      @carolinareaper2063 Před 6 lety +3

      Ray Robinson would have tested Roy's chin and Hagler would have as well. We all know what happened to RJJ once he started to slow down and his opponents were able to catch up to him. A weak chin is a weak chin and a weak chin never wins against a poweful punch. SRR had the hand speed, the timing and accuracy to connect with Roy and he also had the power to put him away. Hagler was an animal in his prime and had a relentless attack. His ability to switch stances in the middle of a combination would have thrown Roy off and his jab would have a key to the fight. A prime Marvin Hagler could brawl, box from the outside, was a great infighter and had the footwork to cut off the ring on Jones. He would have given Roy a lot of trouble and I'm not talking about the version of him that had almost 70 fights and faced Sugar Ray Leonard. A young Hagler was a whole different story. I agree that RJJ was one of the most physically gifted athletes of all time and that goes a long way in boxing but the other two were also physically gifted in their own right but had more overall skills to bring to the table. I can't say who would have won out of the 3 in any given match up between them but I do think it's ludicrous to put Roy above the other two so clear cut.

      That was pretty well known actually. What wasn't as known was that James ballooned to over 220lbs before he fought Jones. He was terribly out of shape going into camp, essentially he had fat camp and not training camp.

      +osbornehunter Ha ha. Okay, let's do this. I was at this fight. I'm happy to point myself out in six different clips in this vid alone. Don't mean shit, but it's real. Roy told me James Toney was his toughest ever opponent, so I give MAD props to Toney just for that alone.
      To answer your question, if the points you are talking about are 10 per round, beating your suppossed toughest opponent for 12 rounds of abuse, then yeah. He fucked his ass up. Roy was the man and Toney was the woman. I don't give a fuck whose team you on or what you think you saw or heard....let;s stick to the facts. Roy beat that motherfuckers ass round after round. It was an ass-whoopin of epic proportions. All things considered, it top 10 greatest beatdown I've seen in my 40 years of boxing. Real shit. We'll just have to agree to disagree that the objective is to win the fight and Roy did that CONVINCINGLY.
      What you think Toney was, is, or will ever be a better fight than Roy? Once again, Roy is the man in that relationship. Common fucking knowledge..

      +Nitro RCNerds And anyone else reading this, I know Toney is a ;'cute' figure with his witty ghetto quotes and shit, but just go watch the fight or the highlights or (as RJJ always said) "better go ask somebody" ha ha. It was one of those fights where Roy had so much control he decided to beat his ass for 12 rounds instead of putting him out. I've said my rah-rah shit....now go check out what happened if you haven't seen, else (and I have to say this).....ya'll musta forgot. ;-)

      ***** look what Tarver did to Jones. I'd say that is an equal comparison in the sense that Hagler was pretty shop worn and at the end of his career when he fought his last fight against Leonard. Jones was past his prime but had some good fights after Tarver.

Forget the weight , its a professional sport, everyone either makes the weight or not, mo execuses. Roy Jones, again like Tont a legend, super speed, great footwork, and he beat some top fighters , Virgil Hill, Talesco[A hard light heavy weight], B-HOP [who was in his prime]. Both really top of their game fighters, both legends!!

    This (Roy vs Toney) fight was before everyone found out how to beat Roy. You just hafta get him into a corner or against the ropes and then just keep nailing him until he goes down. You may get hit a few times, but keep pounding Roy until he goes down. That's what many dudes did later in Roy's career to beat Roy. Roy is just to hard to beat if you try to box with him at the center of the ring.

    • @Asian2706

      “You may get hit a few times.” Don’t you think a “few” times isn’t enough to get knocked out? 😂 Especially by Roy Jones, arguable the most powerful puncher not naturally a heavy weight? 😂 I’m sure you couldn’t take 2 punches from Roy if that’s what a few means to you 😂

    Toney fought at that weight or lower for over six years prior to his fight with Roy, often struggling to make weight. Why is weight suddenly considered a factor? Just because he had his ass handed to him? Besides, it's not like he gassed in the later rounds he was dominated from the opening bell.

    • @BrownBomber92181
      @BrownBomber92181 Před 3 lety +1

      Its an excuse him and his fans love to use. The reason y he struggled to make the weight wasn't because he suddenly grew out of the division, Roy was naturally bigger than James. It was that James didn't have the discipline in between fights. His manager Jackie Kallen would have him fight every 6-8 weeks or so. Because she knew if hed have any sort of layoff that he'd either gain a bunch of weight, or he'd get caught up in thr streets. He actually had a 4 month layoff leading into the Jones fight. Which nowadays isn't a layoff at all, but for James it was. He went into camp at over 220 lbs
