What a great video! I learned a lot from you today. I think one thing that stood out to me is an interesting perspective in the role of living prophets. It may seem that when Joseph Smith was translating the Book of Mormon he also sought to cater to a modern audience in his choice of words, but I don't think this was only a personal choice on his side, but part of the process of revelation. I think when it comes to translation of the word of God by the power of God, it's not just a regular "Google Translate" type of word for word translation, and it cannot be done just by anyone, but only by someone who is authorized by God to do so, because the main objective of the translation is to ensure that the truth comes out to the audience in a way that limits misunderstanding according to the audience's knowledge, language and world view. While this could make some people think that this kind of catering in translation is not credible or that it's not fully the word of God, or that it's tainted by the translator, I think when that translator is a prophet of God, acting with His authority, this kind of "catering" is absolutely valid. To me this only shows why the Book of Mormon is so important as a book of revelation for the people of our day. It also tells me why having modern and living prophets to interpret and teach about the scriptures is so important. The authorized guardians of the doctrine of Christ that are living at a particular time are equipped with additional insight to cater to the needs of the people of that time.

      Some short small things:
      1) The slaying of Laban is technically allowed by Mosaic law. Exodus 21:13 states that if one does not lie in ambush and God "delivers" the victim "into his hand," then God "will appoint [...] a place whither he shall flee." As God directed Nephi to kill Laban and appointed the Promised Land for his people, that rule is fulfilled.
      2) There's a lot of cool things about the phrase "And it came to pass." Definitely recommend looking into it!
      3) Highly recommend that you listen to Hugh Nibley's Book of Mormon lectures!
      4) In reference to Mary, it moreso refers to her purity (white representing purity). Egyptians regarded pale skin as beautiful and as a sign of royalty or nobility.
      5) The Brass Plates (secured from Laban) were records of the prophets and contained several prophets that are not in the Bible.
      6) The Great and Abominable Church is everyone and everything that is not part of the Gospel.
      7) The allegory of the olive tree is expounded upon in the Book of Jacob.
      8) The binary view is part of the Plan of Salvation. After we die, we are placed in Paradise or Prison based on our knowledge and acceptance of Christ and His Gospel. Those in Paradise preach the Gospel to those in Prison. They are also given the opportunity to accept ordinances done in the Temples on their behalf.
      9) The reason as to why the Book of Mormon is similar to the Bible's phrasing is because people are more used to that text.
      10) The Liahona is the compass referenced. It guided them and directed where they went.
      11) The plants, animals, and metals have some cool research. On that note, however, we have not extensive archeology in the Americas (North, Meso, and Sount). There is likely greater evidence that we just simply haven't found yet.
      12) The Book of Mormon was translated for this day. As such, it is for our understanding. This means that the word "Church" might mean several things based on the context rather than just the Greek word.
      13) Leviticus is cool. Numbers is boring.

Yeah! To ease your worries about the issue of skin tone I have a few comments.
1st typically we wouldn't associate wording like that example with mary, as the actual color of skin, I totally understand your immediate association with it though, we would say that this is more of a analogy using the typical associations of light and dark, but using skin color as the base for the analogy.
I feel okay with this reasoning, because at the time of writing, skin color didn't have the associations it does now, because of the history of skin color in our society as whole these passages can be difficult to read, but thats how I would interpret it.
2nd little thing in how I personally would think about it, if these passages have anything to do with skin color at all, it would not be how we think of skin color now. When we think white we think European, but in a small family in the middle east I would bet "white skin" meant something completely different cause I bet they had never even seen a European before. How we interpret and how the writers interpret "Black skin" is the same way. So I personally would just think of it like having a slightly lighter complexion or having a slightly darker complexion.
Overall, a great benefit I've found in thinking about issues like these is putting yourself in the writers shoes and thinking about these things from the writers point of view. With that a lot of the issues I've had with the scriptures at times have begun to make sense.

They got baptized, went to church, quite smoking and drinking which meant that they lost pretty much all their old friends. My folks have passed away after almost 55 years of marriage. My folks have both passed on within 18 months of one another and they loved each other as much as any two people could. The set a good example for me and yes, now I am a Latter-Day Saint.

There was a time I wanted to join the LDS church. But as a restless, spiritually seeking 19 year old, the poor missionaries didn't have a fighting chance with the standards I placed on them as I asked way too big of questions even for my own good 😂, so I never did join. (I was this way with every religion I've explored, not just the LDS, I've been very hard to satisfy spiritually speaking.)

I think many people approach the scriptures looking for a "way out" for themselves to not abide by any principles or precepts, or to look for what's wrong with them. In other words, I think they're looking or a belief or a pattern of living closely aligned to their own or on their terms. The precept of the bible is the need for "the natural man" to change themselves following the precept of the Lord (Old Testament) or Jesus (New Testament). After all, the beginning has "the fall", and it's metaphorically speaking towards the distancing of Adam and Eve from God, and the need for Christ to be that anchor point where we head back into God's direction. Doing this requires self-introspection and humility in the changes we seek to incorporate into our minds and bodies to follow Christ, and abide by His teachings. He IS the path, the way, the truth and the light, right?

There's a lot I've been running from and things are starting to come back full circle in a sense. Surrendering to a savior is not something I've been ultimately interested in because of the kind of traumas I've endured from those in control. 32 And now, behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech.
33 And if our plates had been sufficiently large we should have written in Hebrew; but the Hebrew hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfection in our record.
34 But the Lord knoweth the things which we have written, and also that none other people knoweth our language; and because that none other people knoweth our language, therefore he hath prepared means for the interpretation thereof.
Joseph Smith didn’t coin the phrase reformed Egyptian, and there would be no other form of this language to test against, as this was a language that had evolved over 1000 years of the Nephite culture in the Americas. Go back 1000 years in most cultures that have migrated from their mother country and you will find major changes to that language. As Mormon (the prophet historian who’s mission it was to collect the most important information from a larger collection of the words of the prophets and record-keepers of the previous 1000 years and painstakingly record them on sheets of gold to last through the next 1400 years buried in a hill, unweathered by the elements) himself said - there would have been no errors if they could have written in Hebrew, but even that language had been altered by them. However look into the Algonquin Nation’s language - a Native American tribe in Eastern USA, and you will find remnants of the Hebrew language there, as well as a history that correlates with Book of Mormon teachings. Search up Wayne May on CZcams - he has done a ton of research for the physical evidence of the Book of Mormon. But it is the spiritual evidence that is the key, and why the LDS Church leadership have no official position on geographical location, etc of where the Book of Mormon history takes place - as that is not what’s really important in coming to a belief in the truth of the message in this record which gives the world another witness of Jesus Christ. And really, why is anyone upset to have more information on the subject of Christ, let alone all the great words of wisdom in the Book of Mormon?

In the original gold plates, that was probably a completely different word. But, since the BOM was translated for meaning, it wasn't translated as "the ball thingy which guides us" it was translated as "the compass" because that's what people would have been familiar with and it makes it easier and simpler to read so that you don't have to get hung up on weird nuances like that and can focus on the central message of Jesus Christ.

Those interested in learning more can go directly on the Mormon's very own website and search under "gospel topic essays". These essays prove the deception clearly...
Even though the Mormon church has now admitted (though extremely whitewashed) these things ... they still don't teach their members or children or investigators that Joseph smith had 34 plus wives, many of them teenagers as young as 14, sister combinations, mother daughter combinations, and even women still married to other living men... and they won't teach them the book of Abraham literally has nothing to do with the papyrus Joseph used to "translate" it - in fact the papyrus dates 2000 years AFTER Abraham was alive AND they mention NOTHING about Abraham in the least - they are proven simple Egyptian funeral documents.

From my view as a Latter-day Saint, I think you are really to be commended for actually trying to understand the Book of Mormon, and for taking a respectful tone as you discuss what you are learning. You are right that the Book of Mormon is not boring. I am reminded of the story of an early member of the church, who, upon reading it, was reported to have basically said, "either God wrote it or the Devil did, and I am going to find out who". It is something of substance that has to be dealt with. For me, after reading it repeatedly, I am very interested in the feelings I continue to have as I try to digest the essence of the message of the book. I hope that you have peaceful moments as you continue to read, when even interesting details of history (a history in itself that is unique) can start to take a bit of a back seat to the connection with God that really strengthens as the whole of the message is absorbed. All the best to you in your reading and pondering.

Unfortunately for Mormonism.. the actual truth is .. your feelings and personal experiences don't make the Book of Mormon "TRUE" ... otherwise, the Koran would also be a "TRUE BOOK" because millions upon millions of Muslims say they have the same EXACT feelings - with the same EXACT testimony - when reading the KORAN as Mormon have reading the Book of Mormon. So so sad yet so revealing...
The actual truth is honesty and integrity are far more precious then proven lies designed to make you feel special and important ...
God has proven the Book of Mormon to be obviously plagiarized from several other books including approximately 30 percent directly from the 1828 King James Bible. Translation errors found in the 1828 King James Version match exactly with the Book of Mormon errors. Proving the author of the Book of Mormon directly copied the words from the 1828 King James Bible.
Proving - yet again - definitively the Book of Mormon was plagiarized between 1828 and 1830. Not to mention the endless anachronisms continuously found throughout the Book of Mormon from metal coins, armor, wheeled chariots, steel weapons, plants and domestic animals, etc etc etc. ... dating the book in the early 19th century.
Anyone actually honest with themselves and with God clearly can see God slapping them in the face with the obvious truth.
In my 50 years as a active "temple recommended holding" Mormon, I read the Book of Mormon dozens of times on my mission in NZ and dozen more times through out my life ...through years of study, pondering, prayer and fasting - God had touched my heart, mind and soul.. the Spirit of God has clearly and plainly spoke to me saying "The Book of Mormon is a massive sham" ... "God will not be mocked" .. God has clearly revealed the Book of Mormon to be false in every way it can be looked at.

He uses his studying of the Book of Mormon, then RIPS on it in his other channel. Just giving you a heads up. He is not the nice person I used to think was good as you do in your comment. Example, He really Rips on the Book of Mormon saying it isn't necessary and says the BIBLE is all that is needed. While you and I understand that the Americas were isolated and needed their own church, leaders, and writings, the pastor clearly discriminates stating Book of Mormon NOT AT ALL NECESSARY and CONDEMNED it. You and I realize that all should have the word of Heavenly Father, However, the Protestants feel that is an abomination. It clearly offended me with his Hypocrisy and disingenuous comments on this channel. I have stopped watching his videos and only comment as in this situation. He is as has been stated "The DEVIL in Sheep Clothing". I suggest you watch the Conference talk from 1977 by Legrand Richards on youtube. He referenced a talk he had with a Catholic Cardinal. The Cardinal stated: It is either you or us because the Catholics X-Communicated the Protestants LONG ago when they apostatized and started their own church. It is a WONDERFUL talk. There are so many religions in the world. Among Christian churches there are so many variations, with varying degrees of truth in each. I found them all to be confusing as I was growing up. My parents told me to find my own church and/or religion when I grew up. I took it seriously, that finding truth about God and Christ was important. I didn't even know if they existed for sure. After my son was born I felt the need to have religion in our lives to give us direction. I sincerely prayed to know. I told God that I didn't want to waste one single minute in any church that wasn't the one He preferred. I am so blessed that I didn't have any bias toward any specific church. Nothing seemed strange to me because it was different than I was used to. With this open mind and heart I waited for the answer to my prayer. I received the answer as to which church I should join. I learned what the Holy Spirit feels like when God answers our prayers. I am glad that I didn't reject the answer to my prayer because of preconceived notions. Tabula rasa is a good state of mind to be in when we begin to seek answers from God by prayer.

@@PetBunnyDebbie There is a Math Procedure to find the true church of God.
      1. The church must be organized as in the NEW Testament. With, Prophet at the head, at that time Christ, 12 Apostles, etc. You can reverence from the New Testament. It MUST be a NON paid Clergy. This is Why Christ was killed. The many churches were ANGERED at Christ destroying the Merchants in the Church buildings and temples in addition to taking away followers. It can't be a popular church. The church in the NEW Testament, and Old Testament, was generally hated, despised, and persecuted. The church must have some KIND of Claim to the Authority and the Priesthood. Catholics claim it, but the new Testament makes it clear there was a complete and total death of the church and priesthood. Once the Priesthood was Gone, a Proper Restoration by Christ and Melchizedek was necessary. So, any modern church must be a RESTORED church with PROPER Priesthood AUTHORITY . There is only ONE church on earth today that meets all the requirements. And, that Church is both HATED and RESPECTED. Don't let your emotions sway you. If you find a church that is Identical to the Foundation of the Church at the time of Christ, priesthood, Non paid Clergy, No collecting Money at church, Helps the world, it generally hated by most other religion you have a good starting point. Last, The Lutherans church belongs to Luther. The Church is going to be named after Christ or it is a church of man. It some how will be distinguished as a modern restoration of the original.

Sadly many ex-LDS become Atheists or Agnostics. There is no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Ancient Christianity is proven to have never fully fallen away and the "Great Apostasy" to be false. Jesus said clearly that the gates of hell would never overcome His Church and that His word will never pass away.
As a former Atheist the Bible was proven true even as I came to it from an antagonistic standpoint.
If a text or record claims to be both ancient and holy, it needs to pass two tests. The first test is related to antiquity.
It must do this before it can hope to qualify in the second test which is if the test is truly holy or from God. Having gone through my own experience with the Quran, writings of Ellen G. White, and the Last Testament I can honestly say that while prayer might be one way to determine if an ancient holy book is holy or at the very least spiritual, this can never prove if it is true. Spiritual yes but true no.
To determine if it is indeed true it must first be verified if an ancient holy book is ancient first. It is beyond foolish to attempt to answer questions about divinity before we answer questions about antiquity. If a text is lying to us about events in the ancient past, it cannot be from God, period. No matter how powerful a supernatural conviction hits us or feelings of peace. After all, a book cannot be holy or divine if it is lying about ancient history. This is something I learned with the Quran and the Great Controversy. They are both proven false on the basis of history thus they are proven false no matter how powerful the spiritual conviction. The Old Testament and New Testament are a completely different story.
The New Testament has over 5,800 ancient Greek manuscripts supporting its authenticity, archeology supporting it definitively, literary evidence in countless extra biblical witnesses (for and against Jesus), dna evidence, added on top of the spiritual evidence.
Two BYU professors have shared startling statements on the authenticity of the two collections we now call the Bible.
“One can disagree with the textual assumptions behind some of the modern translations of the New Testament and still not be overly concerned with differences that are immaterial. For a book to undergo progressive uncovering of its manuscript history and come out with so little debatable in its text is a great tribute to its essential authenticity. First, no new manuscript discovery has produced serious differences in the essential story. This survey has disclosed the leading textual controversies, and together they would be well within one percent of the text. Stated differently, all manuscripts agree on the essential correctness of 99 percent of all the verses in the New Testament. The second great fact that such a survey demonstrates is the progress that has placed the world in possession of manuscripts very near to the time of their writing. One would have to be a student of ancient history to appreciate how much superior the New Testament is to any other any book in its manuscript tradition”
Lloyd Anderson (Brigham Young University Professor)
Manuscript Discoveries of the New Testament in Perspective,
Papers of the Fourteenth Annual Symposium on the Archaeology of the Scriptures,
      Presented April 13, 1963, pp. 57-58
"When we consider the ancient methods of transmitting texts by hand, we realize that the Bible went through a remarkable process to make it into this century. The Dead Sea Scrolls stand as a witness that the Old Testament has been passed down through the centuries with a respectable degree of accuracy."
Donald W. Parry (Professor of Hebrew Bible at Brigham Young University)
The Dead Sea Scrolls-Window to the Modern Bible
      Ensign - December 2014
We can trust fully in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. It does help to read the Apostolic Fathers and the 2nd and 3rd century Church Fathers because it proves that the Church never fell away fully. At times there has been need to return to the original view of God's unmerited favor and the free gift of Eternal Life with Him. However the Church itself as the body of Christ (not a specific organization) has always been guided by the Holy Spirit and never lost the authority of Heavenly Father, it never fell away.

Hi Jesse. I've been a member of people not treated well by Mormons, and I have enjoyed reading your CZcams comment. I enjoy following your journey of posting a CZcams comment.
Anyways Jesse. I'm curious about your feelings on the failed DC84 Temple prophecy, where Joseph Smith makes a prophecy that their generation will not pass before a temple is built in Missouri. Then the Mormons are ran out of Missouri, and the temple is never built, and still isn't built. God predicted he would see "a cloud rest" upon the temple. How do you explain this failed prophecy?
Also why did Brigham Young steal a wife and mother from her family, impregnate her (while sending her real active husband away on LDS missions), and then ignore her after she had his baby. How do you contend with the fact that Brigham Young impregnated a woman who already had a husband and two children with her own family? How can you possibly say Brigham didn't trick a woman into committing adultery? (We are talking about Zina Diantha Huntington).
If you have any explanation for why Zina and Brigham's child wasn't a product of adultery, I would love to hear your explanation.

I stumbled upon this this morning. I am a Latter-Day-Saint. I am also a Lamanite (Mexican). The white thing... we who are of color have within our own culture a prejudice, if you will. There are "black" Mexicans (those who are very dark), and "white" Mexicans, who are obviously lighter skinned. My grandmother was so fair that she was able to sit at the front of movie theaters back in the late thirties and early forties, while my grandfather, a "black" Mexican, had to sit in the back (they were from Los Angeles). I personally feel this is what they are speaking about when they describe Mary as "white". In our cultures, lighter skinned people were looked upon more favorably.

Hi, I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and thank you! I would like to address two of your concerns. 1) 1st Nephi 11:13 - refers to the word 'white', cross reference that with 1st Nephi 12: 10-11, also refers to the word 'white'. Nephi uses the word white as we would understand pure, or clean, those would be synonyms and you could essentially read 1N 11:13 as "exceedingly fair and" 'pure', or "exceedingly fair and" 'clean'. And 1N 12:10, "for because of their faith in the Lamb of God their garments are made 'pure or clean' in his blood". Same for verse 11. Imagine the level of cleanliness Mary the mother of Jesus Christ had to be for Jesus Christ to be born of her, I believe she was virtuous. 2) the word 'compass' in 1N 18: 12 & 21 refers to the 'ball' or 'director' referred to in 1N 16: 10, 16 that worked according to Faith and Diligence and did not work when the families faith and diligence dwindled, you're correct, a magnetic compass that aligns north-south wasn't available at that time.
    Hope that helps your concerns!

My understanding is that Lehi also named his sons from multiple languages, which made me think he might be a merchant (along with his wealth and Nephi's knowledge of how to make tools from ore. If I remember correctly, Laman and Lemuel are Aramaic in origin, Sam and Nephi are Egyptian, and the two sons he had after they left Jerusalem, Jacob and Joseph, are finally of Hebrew origin. And, Nephi talks about being taught both Hebrew and Egyptian, and later in the book it's mentioned by Mormon that both languages were modified by their people, which is what is meant by "reformed Egyptian", and that they would have written the record in Hebrew if the plates had been large enough, so the Egyptian was more compact than the Hebrew.

The 9th Article of Faith comes to mind. While we believe all that God has revealed, does reveal, and will yet reveal, many of our Christian brethren believe the canon of scripture to be closed, that God has said all that He needed to in the Bible and that it is complete as is. Then there are those that seem to embrace darkness, peddle evil, hurt and harm others intentionally, seek selfish gains, abuse and harm people, that have hard hearts and no or little love in them. They represent the church of the devil, evil, and spiritual/moral darkness. I have friends and such from all walks of life that radiate Christ like love to those around them. Sometimes these fine humans don't even know how much of that light they share. Just my two cents.

It's actually nice to hear about my Church from a fresh perspective, without the threat of attack. 😊 I also really appreciate that you dedicated time to read the Book of Mormon. A couple of insights ... I read some other commenters mention these subjects, I just want to expand some more:
    1. The compass is definitely not the type if compass we have nowadays. It was 100% dependent on Lehi's family's righteousness. And it was guided directly by the Lord, not by magnetism. 🙂
    2. It is concerning that Nephi kills the wicked King Laban, but a couple notes on that. First, in Chapter 4 verse 10, Nephi states, "And it came to pass that I was constrained by the Spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart: Never at any time have I shed the blood of man. And I shrunk and would that I might not slay him." In the next verse it says that the Spirit told him again to do it, which he did then. Nephi did NOT WANT to kill, which personally I believe makes all the difference. If he HAD wanted to kill, that would have meant that Nephi himself was evil. Additionally, I want to emphasize what it says in verse 13: "... It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." God loves His children!! You know that. What would have happened if there were no flood in the time of Noah? Thousands or maybe even millions of people may have dwindled in unbelief, then subsequently been lost for eternity. But God is merciful, & if He wants to remove someone in the way of another's salvation, He may choose to do so.
Thanks for what you're doing! 🙏🏼

Hello Paster Jeff, wonderful approach and I love hearing your reactions. There are some things you may want to keep in mind as you consider this translation. First, Joseph didn't translate this the same way scholars translate the texts of the Bible. In fact, most of the time he wasn't even looking at the plates. He said that he translated it by the gift and power of God (he was a 23 year old farm boy with a 3rd grade education and lived in the frontier). Those who scribed for Joseph said that when they would stop for the day and pick up the next day, Joseph would never ask to have anything read back to him--he just picked up from where he left off. Since he wasn't a scholar or very educated, when he translates something like "Church" he isn't translating from Greek and not trying to translate like a normal scholar would from the reformed Egyptian characters. But, words would come to him that made sense to him in his setting and life experience. So, Church would naturally come to mind for him for a congregation or even synagogue. Here's a couple more points for you:
    1. The Compass in chapter 18 is the Liahona that Lehi found earlier in the story
    2. Regarding 2 churches (one of the devil and one of God), as you continue reading the Book of Mormon you will find passages that clarify this a bit by stating that anything that leads away from Christ is from the devil and anything that leads you to Christ is of God
I'm interested to see the rest of your journey. Since you are a trained bible scholar, you are probably familiar with Hebrew poetry. Pay attention throughout the Book of Mormon for Chiasmus (a very common form of ancient near east poetry). Some of the most beautiful and complex Chiasmus is found all throughout the Book of Mormon. Something that wasn't even understood by scholars of the west in the nineteenth century, and certainly not by an untrained 23 year old farm boy. Lastly, Joseph translated the entire Book of Mormon in 65 to 80 days with no notes--according to dozens of witnesses.
    Thanks again!

I really admire your approach to this, even if it is just to gain understanding. I have studied The Book of Mormon and the Bible my whole life. I will say this, they both have parts that cause some questions. You may see something about horses in the Book of Mormon that causes you to question it, or you might read a story in the Bible about a talking donkey that makes you wonder if that was real. I find that the approach is key. Am I reading this to build my faith and come closer to Christ, or am I reading this to be critical? I have seen many academic arguments and evidences that support the authenticity of The Book of Mormon. I have seen many arguments that try to refute it. I'm not saying that questions shouldn't be pursued and answered, but if you focus on those things you may miss the point. I believe it is ultimately our personal responsibility to seek out God and understand how we are to act in relation to him. I wish you well in your journey.

I see your point, but don't really think the analogy with the talking donkey works. Whether one believes the donkey really spoke by the power of God or not, the fact remains that donkeys actually did exist in that time and place where the story happened. But with horses in the Book of Mormon, it's well established historical fact that there were no horses on the American continent at that time. It's one of many anachronisms that are good reasons to question the historicity of the Book of Mormon.

The same is true with reference to the existence of horses in the "promised land," or indeed, that of any given species at any place in the world at any given time. Science, research, exploration can only determine if they *did* exist, not that they didn't.

This is so exciting! I'm so glad you're sharing your journey as you search for truth. Thank you for taking us and our Restoration scripture seriously. (I can't wait to hear what you think about "A Bible, a Bible" in the next video!)
6:41 I have never heard anyone assert the Virgin Mary was Caucasian based on 1 Nephi 11. We understand it to mean she was spiritually pure and clean, not necessarily white-skinned. In support of this definition, Joseph Smith updated 2 Nephi 30:6 in the 1840 edition from the original "white and delightsome people" to read "pure and delightsome people". (That said, there are other references to skin color later on that aren't as easily explained.)
9:20 The bit about the two Churches is a favorite passage of mine. I don't interpret that as meaning congregations or even organizations, but referring instead to people's alignment - how Lewis' "Screwtape" in Letter 2 describes the Christian Church "spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as an army with banners." Either a person is aligned with the Lamb and working for God's glory, or they are aligned with the Devil and working against the Lord. Every church on Earth (I'm including Christians, non-Christians, and atheists, and even us LDS) contains people who fall into both camps.
11:19 The binary Judgment, analogous to Heaven/Hell, is as far as the Book of Mormon explores the afterlife, with one exception - that being Alma's description of this same dichotomous judgment which is qualified with the addition that it ONLY lasts until the general Resurrection and subsequent Final Judgment. The concept of the 3 Degrees of Glory, which occurs AFTER the Judgment, is not found here.
16:15 As others have pointed out, the "compass" is the Ball or Director given to Lehi, which was later called the Liahona. As for other items listed such as horses and barley, I suggest you look to the work of FAIR (Foundation for Apologetic Information & Research) and FARMS (Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies) for some excellent resources.

In the most recent video Jeff posted, his 2 Nephi walkthrough, he points out over and over that much of the text would be right at home in Deuteronomy, or in Isaiah, or among the Pauline Epistles.
Is it so impossible to believe God is speaking again? Imagine for a moment that God called another prophet in these days. (After all, Revelation 11 suggests this strongly.) What do you imagine that would look like? How would you recognize him as a prophet? What qualifications would you expect him to fulfill? Would his words be considered scripture? @@anonymoustruth5950 See, the thing is, WE WOULD AGREE WITH YOU. There is only one Gospel. Jesus is the only way whereby we may be saved. I feel like we might be talking past each other.
I imagine you're referring to Galatians 1:6-9? And that since we are preaching "another Gospel", we are accursed. But what IS the Gospel? Is it the specific set of WORDS that make up the Bible, or is it the MESSAGE those words convey? Even though the BOM uses different words, it contains the same message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
But maybe your objection is that there are teachings in the Book of Mormon that aren't found in the Bible, that every new scripture produced must be in total agreement with the scripture that came before. If that were the case, what would we do with Revelation, that contains so much material not found in previous scripture? What would we do with the New Testament at all?
Although maybe you say that the Bible is the end of God's word, and that disqualifies the Book of Mormon from containing the true Gospel. But where in the Bible does it say that? You might point to Revelation 22:18-19, but that only refers to the Book of Revelation itself. (Similar to how Deuteronomy 4:2 only refers to the Pentateuch.) Nowhere in the Bible does God say He will never speak again. If the lost epistles of Paul to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 5:9) and the Laodiceans (Colossians 4:16) were found, would they have place in the Bible?
I understand that you don't accept Joseph Smith as a prophet, and reject the Book of Mormon on those grounds. But to call it another Gospel? Please listen to WHAT the Book of Mormon is SAYING about Jesus Christ, and qualify it or disqualify it based on that--the MESSAGE of the words.

      9) The BOM was never prophesied in the Bible, but neither was Paul prophesied of in the Old Testament. If there was a Biblical prophecy that there would never be further scripture aside from the Bible, that would mean something, but you can't prove a negative.

      11) We believe Hell is a real place. There's a temporary version for before Final Judgment, akin to the Catholic teachings of Purgatory; and then there's an eternal version which will be occupied AFTER Final Judgment. We generally teach that "fire and brimstone" is a metaphor for how it feels to be there, but we call it "Outer Darkness" and it's for people who knowingly fight against Jesus Christ.
      12) Yes, we believe God loves everyone--we are His children. But that does NOT mean we all will be saved. Jesus says so: "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 7:21). We just believe everyone should have the same opportunity to accept salvation.
      13) How do you know?

Your video just showed up on my feed, and it is refreshing to hear your insights. My interpretation of the two churches is this; a church or organization that brings you closer to Christ is Christ’s church. If it doesn’t, it is the church of the devil. I struggled with the wording of those verses for years until I was finally able to understand it like that. I believe that there are many people who may not be a member of the LDS faith who will be saved, and there are many who are members of the LDS faith who won’t be saved because of their choices and actions. God is just, but He is oh so merciful and loving. As we love Him, and show that love through our choices and actions, He will see that and bless us accordingly. Matthew 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. All who follow Him can be saved. You talked about Joseph Smith’s vision when he was told to not join any church because they were all an abomination. But do you know why God said that? He said that the preachers drew close to Him with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. That is why they were the church of the devil. Not because they weren’t the restored church of Jesus, but because they were not focused upon Him who is the life giver. If someone is trying to teach you about something they don’t believe, the truths are going to be lost, right? Which was the case here. Anyway, I don’t know if you will actually read this comment, but if you do, I hope it helps with your understanding.

Unfortunately it doesn't go both ways. Joseph Smith brought you a new god, a new jesus, and brought you to believe you your self may become a God. Joseph's writings made it quite clear that there is zero connection between mormonism and Christianity.

I’m so glad I found your channel! It’s a breath of fresh air. I haven’t seen anyone else say it, but your question about the compass when it was mentioned. It’s talking about the Liahona, a compass given to Lehi (it was outside his tent) from God that would point them to the promised land as long as they were faithful in the commandments of God, if they weren’t faithful the compass (Liahona) wouldn’t work.

Thank you so much for doing this channel! I have great respect for you exploring another faith, especially when many others dismiss us out of hand. I think it's interesting to note, at the time of translation, Joseph Smith had never read through the whole Bible, and he only had about a third grade education. In my mind that just cements even more that there was no way he made this all up. Thank you again for putting in the time and effort to do all that you do

You know how when you watch a great movie, and you sit down to watch it with someone who's never seen it, and you can't WAIT to see their reaction when it gets to the good parts? That's how I'm feeling taking this journey with you. I can't wait to see your reaction. I'm so glad that you've decided to pray as you go, to invite the Holy Ghost to teach you as you go. The Holy Ghost testifies of truth, and it is through His power that we “may know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:5). The Holy Ghost teaches us all things and brings to our remembrance all we have learned of the Lord and His gospel (see John 14:26).

Excellent summary Pastor Jeff! I also have slowly made my way through 1 Nephi along with you. I found some interesting things very similar. I also have read it in the 1830 edition of the Book Of Mormon, and that was fascinating. What I found interesting was the way the books differed in the definition of God. I have a 1982 copy of the Book of Mormon I am using to read along, and I actually listen to it online, so I do not miss anything! I do not know the scholastic criteria you have been trained in, but I have been reading the KJV Bible for many years. I am a history addict, and I love and have studied archaeology and geography. I have worked among different religions as a missionary, and find this journey a long time coming. I have encountered the LDS culture in my missionary work in the past and among friends like you have. I love the people, they are dedicated and committed. I communicated I would follow along reading this with your venture. Thank you for such an articulate and respectful video. My first thoughts were that the beginning of the Book including the introduction, and witness testimonies were unique. That the first edition calls it a 'Authorship' and not a translation, Joseph Smith being the 'Sole Proprietor'. I am guessing that may be because he wanted exclusive rights to it's ownership after printing.I did not see this on my 1982 copy. I got a bit stuck in the section of scripture concerning the Urim and Thumin being the means for translation. I will not get into that here, but I have done extensive study on this subject, even before reading about Joseph Smith. Non the less, I enjoyed my first read with a few deep dives, and will keep going. Thank you for your kindness, and I keep all in my prayers.

I can answer this one. It had to do with the publishing laws in New York at that time. Someone's name HAD to be listed as the author for it to be printed. This does not mean that Joseph Smith wrote the book.

Though this is not an official Church published definition, one member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in years past defined it this way:
The titles "Church of the Devil" and "Great and Abominable Church" are used to identify all churches or organizations of whatever name or nature--whether political, philosophical, educational, economic, social, fraternal, civic, or religious-- which are designed to take men on a course that leads away from God and his laws and thus from salvation in the kingdom of God. Any church or organization of any kind whatever which satisfies the innate religious longings of man and keeps him from coming to the saving truths of Christ and his gospel is therefore not of God."
I think this sums up pretty nicely what I understand these scriptures to mean

As to the two churches that Nephi mentions and more specifically the great and abominable church, I think about CS Lewis and how he treated the last book of the Narnia series. That one character who was sincere but was following the wrong tradition. Forgive me it’s been a while since I read the book. Many details are shadowy in my mind. But that character believed what he had been taught and was sincere in living according to what he knew. He was a joyful soul and wanted to be best he could be. If we change the word church to kingdom and get away from trying to identifying which church is the evil church and instead look at who is living according to what he/she know to be true and living to improve his/her life compared to he/she who is trying to do whatever it takes to get ahead and gain power and riches, I think that is more accurate. Both kinds of people are present in every denomination and tradition. More the goats and sheep idea. A matter of the state of the heart. This is fascinating. Thank you for sharing this journey

The problem that I have with people going off their feelings to make a decision on judging if the Book of Mormon is true or not, is that feeling can be very deceiving. I mean don’t you question that there was no horses, wheels, wheat. Steal and hundreds of other problems, not to mention that there is no evidence, not even a single coin that proves it. I would love to believe it but the overwhelming evidence as well as the overwhelming lack of evidence tells me otherwise. I had to ask myself, would God allow so many problems?

    • @kd3738

@Jose Sanchez You are basing everything on a feeling. Biblically, you are standing on shifting sands, my friend (Proverbs 14:12 and Jeremiah 17:9). A drug user, a pornography addict, a hedonist, a philanthropist, a nationalist, and a devout religionist, all have powerful and confirming emotional experiences, but truth isn't established through emotions. In the Gospel of John chapter 8:32,36, we read that truth sets you free and that truth is found in the Son. Which Son? The one found in the Gospel of John and throughout the Bible (John 5:39-40). Jose, I would encourage you to repent (Acts 17:30) and put your faith/trust in the Jesus of the Bible (Acts 20:21). He alone can save you from your sin and from Hell/Outer Darkness (Matthew 7:21-23; Matthew 25:31,46; John 14:6, Acts 4:12; 2 Corinthians 5:21). Jose, you can have forgiveness right now (Ephesians 1:7 and Colossians 1:14) and you can have eternal life right now (John 5:24 and John 6:47). This isn't based on a feeling, but upon God's promise. He isn't like you and me; He doesn't break His word (Romans 3:4).

With all respect, you can find a bible verse that fits anything you want. I’m talking about Joseph Smith and the fallacies he wrote that are false without question. Start with the happiness letter that was written in his own hand and go from there. Don’t you find it odd that people were excommunicated because they said Joseph wrote the Book of Mormon with a rock in a hat? Now they have to declare all these ridiculous things because of lawsuits. Just read the church history on the LDS website, it’s a game changer. Sorry but there’s to much information that has been exposed. The LDS’s days are numbered.

The only infallible way to know the truth is to ask God, the source of all Truth. Most all of us have had the witness of the Holy Ghost via feelings that come in no other way -- as we read the New Testament. I am always amazed at how scripture scholars in Jesus' day (the Chief Priests, Scribes and Pharisees) missed that Jesus was their long awaited Messiah. How did they miss Him? They trusted in their own learning, and their own wisdom. They made assumptions based on what they knew and came to wrong conclusions. Let go, Let GOD! I trust the Holy Spirit to lead and guide. The feeling of love, peace and joy that has come in no other way to me... I cannot go to God and ask Him if something is right or true if I've already made up my mind that it isn't. To be fair, when I was handed a Bible, I was not told it was false, or that I needed to be careful about it...I was told to read and pay attention to my feelings. When I read the Bible, I feel the Holy Spirit witness that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of the World. I feel the very same feelings when I read the Book of Mormon. I know that witness comes from God. Jesus taught the way to know...John 7:17 "If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself" 1 Corinthians 2:11 "... the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Jesus promises us that if we ask we shall be given...He wants us to ask. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-7

Amazing video!! I’m a member of the Church and a recently returned missionary of about 3 months. There’s a couple things I’d like to clarify but to not over clutter I’ll refer to one. So the idea that no unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God is completely true, so defining Heaven exclusively as the place God physically dwells would make the 2 lesser kingdoms a state of ‘hell’ in a sense. I’d personally refer to them as such being you will never be able to stand before God the Father after your judgment. But this is not to say that Gods light (all light) cannot shine into distant parts of existence albeit in a more dulled and partial way to light other places with a certain glory depending on which glory is inherited.
To clarify even further, God cannot dwell in the 2 lower kingdoms because of the imperfection of those who reside there. If they did, they would have to flee like shadow near a bright light.
