When the Burmese invaded the Ayutthaya kingdom in 1767, they vandalized most of the Buddha images (among other things such as essential scriptures, artworks, etc.) to demonstrate their victory over the Thai. That would be one explanation

Ayuddhaya was defeated and burnt down by Burmese over 250 years ago after being the capital for over 400 years. As you like Ayudhaya, you might like Sukhothai, the first capital city of the Kingdon, in the central north as well.
Mario’s glasses are so cool and btw if he wants he could become an archiologist. Doesnt need to wait for next lfe 😄👍🏻

Sukothai and Ayutthaya are different kingdoms, it stayed separate throughout its history, even when Sukothai moved its capital to Pitsanulok they had their own King separate from Ayutthaya.
Sukhothai people came from the regions of Loungprabang and Ayutthaya people came from the Lao region of Xiengkhouang

The Temple was burnt and ransack when the kingdom fall but I don't think they cut the buddha head back then, they just want the goods and treasure to take back to Burma to fight back the Chinese that they are at war with at that time, buddha head are too heavy and don't have much value at that time.
But later Antique dealers cut the head and sold it in the black market you can see a lots of buddha head in many wealthy house especially in Europe or America.
ps. You should go to see the museum in town or Japanese village or many Temple out of the town.

In the 50's on a lot of treasure hunting found a lot of treasure. The government could not stop them so, the start giving out permit but need to sell to the government that what I remember. Thailand always build statue with donation gold that why all over Thailand we have many gold Buddha statue. Some holes that you see used to be treasure inside but someone stole them. Later they found out but too late.

Ayutthaya was the largest and most powerful center of the Thai Kingdom in our history. This may explain the expanse of the temple/city structure you guys are walking around in. I know that this kingdom center was responsible for expanding the Thai Kingdom to its peak prosperity before it was destroyed by the Burmese forces. It actually had very strong political clout from way up north in the Lanna Kingdom all the way down to the Malay Peninsula and across towards the Isaan area where it meets the Khmer Kingdom at the time. Well that's about how much I'd like to go to for now 'coz it gets fairly detailed from here on out and I don't think my memory is up to it. Thanks for the trip back in time guys and great vlog!!!

The stairs in the main prang of Ratchaburana Temple lead the way down to the treasure chambers where King Chao Sam Phraya, the 7th King of Ayutthaya Kingdom (est. year 1416) , ordered to build them to store some ancient treasures such as golden rings, crowns, coronation items made from authentic gold which belonged to his father, Intha Racha, the 6th king before him. Unfortunately, 66 years ago a group of thieves blew up the prang entrance to steal what in there which caused damages to the old wall paintings in the chambers. It’s unbelievable that more than 100 kgs of gold and thousands of royal items were stolen that day and the police could retrieve only about 10% of them. One of the thieves revealed that once they were inside the chambers, around them were tremendous of gold and jewels and the amount of the treasures stored in there were placed from their toes high up to the ceilings! Just imagine that!
I was there before you guys maybe 9 or 10 years ago and they still allowed us to go down the stairs to visit the chambers and what in there was fascinating! The 600-year-old wall paintings still exist until today (yet all the treasures which were only 10% of the remaining were relocated to Chao Sam Phraya National Museum adjacent to the temple. And you can still visit the place to witness the antique items that once were in the chambers.

Oh! And in the chamber that the bats were in there was the first level where they stored hundreds of thousands of hundred-year-old buddha images and many more sacred items piled up from the floor to the ceilings and like the others only some of them were retrieved 😢 Just like you said in the video, some of those worth million today.

Mario did you guys go visit Wat Phu in Laos? It's more ancient part of the Ancient Khemer Kingdom. All of Thailand was before the Tai migration from China populated and took over the lands.. Notice I wrote Tai not Thai.

Hey guys i miss a lot of videos of the great heathen army of the siamese reign 🤣this is a great ancient place and yes Olivia its right there was a war between siamese and burmeses. The city was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, who made it the capital of his kingdom, often referred to as the Kingdom of Ayutthaya or Siam. In 1767 the city was destroyed by the Burmese army in the course of the Burmese-Siamese War, in which most of the royal family and 90,000 people were kidnapped,2 and the ruins of the old city now form the Burmese Historical Park. Ayutthaya. The new city was founded just a few kilometers east of the old one, about 80 km north of Bangkok. The capital was moved to Thon Buri.
By the 17th century it had become an important international port with great commercial activity. They traded teakwood, sandalwood, sugar, hides, ivory, furs, silks, and local handicrafts, as well as items from Japan and China.
I think olivia should interview a new monk in thailand with lovely glasses😅

Ayutthaya was established by a prince from Xiengkhouang northern Laos named Uthong. The famous Thai historian and linguistic expert Dr David K Wyatt says that the early kingdom spoke a dialect that came from Xiengkhouang northern Laos where the stone jars are. Uthong was King at the same time as FaNgum of Laos, Uthong even wrote that he came from the same lineage as FaNgum, when FaNgum established Lanxang after conquering Vientiane.
