The Answer in Progress team needs to come back to the show ASAP, the entire mood and atmosphere was just brilliant.
Next Season of Citation Needed
They frequently cheated on their "performance art." Their moto appeared to be, "It is the concept not the performance." I do not think they actually walked, just met up 90 days later.
certainly removes the "performance" of it all..... not that that matters...../s
It's like my space programme. I went to Mars and came back last year, I just didn't bother with the middle part.
@@RFC-3514 Each jump is a Mars mission.
Please do not shit-talk Marina Abramovic, she is a very talented and influential artist, I happen to have met her in Belgrade about a decade ago, she is a very nice lady.
great wall of china is 13,170 miles long (21,196km). The Ming Dynasty section is 5,500 miles (8,851km) long.
They started the process to walk the wall in 1983. They were given permission in 1987 and then retracted before being given permission again.
They started their walk on March 30 1988. Abramovic started in the east heading west from the dragon's head, Ulay started at 'the dragon's tail' in Gobi Desert. They were separated by 3106 miles (5,000 km). This would mean approximately 1550 miles each. In the 90 days they averaged 12 Miles (20km) a day. Supposedly it would be another 22 years before they talked again.
- information gathered from two articles including an April 25 2020 guardian article about their walk.
Interesting numbers, thanks. But there is something that doesn't add up:
If they averaged 12 miles or 20 km per day for 90 days (which is still a decent average walking pace - for comparison pilgrims to Santiago de Compostella usually average 20-25km/day) they would make 3600 km (or 2250 mi), which is actually short of their starting seperation. So they must have skipped parts - or have had an average pace of 28 km/day, which is a bit doubtful as that would put them in higher performance tiers (people who train regularly for years).
@@hebl47 I suspect the numbers aren't completely accurate, and some cheating was done along the way. Especially since the article states they stayed in hostels some nights. This would have taken them off course a couple of miles a few times making the trip even longer.
I would be surprised if the path is worse than the Appalachian trail in the US which serious hikers get between 10 and 25 miles a day on.
@@icarus_flying1994 Good idea with the Appalachian trail. Some interesting resources there. But that 25 miles a day is quite on the hardcore side. Here's what a hiking site says for average people (and many comments on forums seem to align with that mileage):
"Most hikers start out slow, averaging eight to 10 miles a day. They will eventually work up to 12 to 16 miles a day."
The look on Tom's face just before he said "The Proclaimers" wins this one
I just wanna say i really appreciate the effort that was put into the subtitles here 💗 I wish more CZcamsrs would correct their subtitles to be correct let alone color coordinated ones 🤯💓 amazing ! Keep it up! 💖
Tom did make a good choice by choosing caption plus as a company to do this with the subtitles that move so they don't cover anything important and the color coordination.
What a great group of people! Saw Sabrina in the thumbnail and knew this would be good - even better to have Taha and Melissa there as well!
Marina Abramović and Ulay were powerhouses in doing art that is conceptually simple, but too extreme to replicate.
Some works to read about that truly made an impact on my idea of what art could be: Rest Energy, Breathing In/Breathing out, Rhythm 0, The Artist is Present (the art work described later in the video). It is some heavy material though.
I find her really hack, lame, uninspiring
I’ve just looked this up - it’s crazy
Ulay turned up & had apparently impregnated his translator 😂
First one of these that I actually already knew the answer to. Really fun watch and so amazing to see Marina Abramovich get some recognition for some of her amazing work. There's a documentary on her performance that was mentioned later in the video, The Artist is Present, in which they also cover this 90 day breakup and I truly recommend it to anyone who found this vidro interesting. It really gave me personally a whole new view on performance art and even art as a whole and Matina really is fantastic for doing all that she has.
Quick heads-up for Tom and the production team: I think the description of the video got replaced with the description for the Ringo album video-it doesn’t seem to match the content of this question. I enjoyed the video nonetheless!
Thanks, now fixed.
5:00 I was listenin to this and knew it from the start havin heard it before and legit made a face of a knowin grin after Tom said this and then burst out laughin when i heard "You're making a face" xD
Assuming they both started in the same place, near one of the poles, could they walk east and west and meet up after each completing a half circle around the pole? I think that works.
If we go with the Proclaimers-style "500 miles", it looks like it would need to be the south pole (too much water in the north), and they would need to do start 87°41'54"S (around 87.69° South). That line of latitude has a circumference of about 1000 miles, so they would meet each other after each walking 500. And if they walked 500 more, they would be back at the start :D
Would be really cold though, do not recommend.
What’s funny is that “Documentary Now” did a spoof of the Marina Abramovic documentary and everything they try to do as a joke *is less crazy than what Abramovic actually did in real life*
Love is tired 💀💀💀
The 500 mile joke killed me 😂😂😂
Tom mentions walking for 90 days, and how much would they do in a day. I think he vastly low-balls with 6-7 miles (if I heard him correctly) - at an average walking speed of 2mph, that's only 3 hours of walking. Many retail workers will do that in a typical shift. If you walked for the better part of a day, say 6-7 hours, that's at least 12 miles, and 90 days of that would be around 108 miles. Which a quick Google says is maybe 1/3 of the widest distance of the UK.
Did you get the decimal point right there with the 108? Isnt it 1080? 90 days of walking feels like it should take you much further than across little Britain.
On the Camino de Santiago people typically walk 20-25km/day.
@@BajkonurBobbyyes it’s 1080 miles
Oh wow, a case of "stuff I learned in school (art class), comes back to be useful"
If you can call knowing the answer to a youtube quiz show "useful"
Hmm, I think this one was missing the usual twist or je ne sais quoi that most Lateral questions have
4:47 - Cat!
I agree it would make a lot more sense to start in the middle and walk away.
For peak symbolism, walk across a demilitarized zone (or heavily guarded border)
I got this one instantly. Yay me!
Anyone else annoyed the cat wasn't given its own screen time?
I'd say starting at opposite ends of the great wall is a bit of hyperbole as its 13,000 miles to cover on foot in 90 days. Just a brisk pace of 144 miles a day.
I was hoping it'd be the North/South Korean DMZ
Oddly enough my first thought was the Berlin Wall and that they started at the wall and went in separate directions away from each other
Met in the middle and dropped dog poop on each other shoes. See Steve Martin.
Marina is responsible for the more famous Rhythm 0 performance artpiece as well!
I walked 53 km in a day recently, in about 12 hours… took over 80,000 steps!
Melissa over there still figuring out how to get audio lmao
Taha, I missed the portion of the question that talks about 'meeting up.' Where did this come from?
Bureacracy makes love so difficult!
Funny how in an episode where Tom talks about how young people don't know the Beatles any more, one of those young people picks an art performance from over 30 years ago that's pretty obscure compared to the Beatles.
Did anyone else also think the great wall of china ran North-South? I was of the same mindset as Tom, but I just looked it up and it is indeed East-West
I was confused, because I thougt they started without an intention to break up. I thougt they figured that up on their Way 😅
Why were they thinking that they have to meet up after the 90 days?
The way I understood the question was that they broke up, went in opposite directions for 90 days and then each of them did whatever they wanted
Lateral thinking…
I guessed it _immediately!_ 🏆 (Except for the marriage part.)
"Was it the Vatican?" *laughs in Marina Abramavic*
Was expecting something a bit more interesting 😊
They should have rappelled down opposite sides of the wall after they met up.
5:31 If Tom were the host, yes, you wud get the pt; reluctantly xD
what episode number is this?
I had the same idea of Taha at the begining
Also if near enough of one pole they can start from the same position and meet up while walking east and west each (but it's really cold)
That seems really slow paced. Like you'd have to walk for an hour, walking half speedish, take two hour breaks after every hour of walking, and take an 8 hour sleep rest a day
How would you work this out?
I really don't understand this at all. Where are they getting this info that isn't found in the question?
The 'host' for each question receives a sheet of paper that contains: the question text, a list of suggested clues, the 'model' answer, an explanation of the answer, and any other background notes that may be useful, interesting or amusing.
They so didn't like each other that he (Ulay) sued her for breach of contract and claiming credit for their shared work as wholly her own
Very hard to follow this video
"Wanna walk the Great Wall of China and get married in the middle?"
"Yeah!"
*One Eternity Later*
"...I hate you now."
"I hate you more."
"Are we still doing the Great Wall thing?"
"Duh, we're getting paid, aren't we?"
"...are we? I don't know how performance art works."
"And that's why I hate you now."
Also, I now have the Proclaimers in my head, so... thanks for that 😂
I wonder if this inspired the writers of Deep Space Nine to create the Bajoran breakup ritual...
I glanced through the comments quickly and didnt see this mentioned. Decades later Marina was doing performance art at MOMA which entailed sitting in a chair alone onstage. Everyminute a new person would sit across from her. They would stare at each other in the eyes without talking for that length of time. unbeknownst to her, Ulay sat in the chair after several other people had taken their turns. They stared at each other. Tears started streaming down her cheeks. They touched hands. then time was up and he left. she gathered herself and continued staring other strangers in the eyes.
Dove...
Oh Tom 😬
Now I wonder if Tom believes Mongolia is West or East of China.
like lil yachty once said, they were taking the walk to poland
They did in fact walk waaaaay over 1000 miles, so they one upped The Proclaimers xD
Neither Melissa nor Taha had anything constructive to say, as much as Taha tried 😖
"Maybe that's why they broke up, because they were bad at performance art"
As someone who has some background knowledge on Marina Abramovich that sentence really annoyed me more than it should have. She really is a fantastic performance artist and it's a shame not more people know about her.
Happy that he retracted the statement at the end.
Surely it would have been more epic to start at either end of the Great Wall of China and just pass in the middle without acknowledging each other and just continue to the other ends of the wall.
Aaaagh i can't focus on the show because of the cat
Which is **not** a bad thing for me
Love is blind…. Divorce is 2020
Is this show just the worst possible questions to get in a job interview?
For them to both walk 90 days and meet, it would be the rough average of 25 miles per day, for 180 days. It would be a stretch of about 4500 miles, which is only possible in a straight line between Siberia and Thailand, iirc.
90 day fiance is already a t.v. show, and it features a guy who puts mayonnaise in his hair.
North Pole?
Ummm, aren't there far more important things to ponder like curing cancer?
Didn’t hear much from Melissa….. 🤔
Marina is probably the single greatest performance artist of the 20ths and 21st century (so far) and among the most important on the conceptual artists of all time and her work with Ulay was critical for this. I wonder if they met during the 2015 lawsuit.
"Performance artist" is a really weird way to say Satanic devil worshiper. 👹
Marina Abramovich is amazing. Possibly the bravest person i've ever heard of. Walking 2500 km in 90 days might be the one of the easiest things she's done
