  • In this video Mr. Swarthout goes over the difference between farsightedness and nearsightedness. Included is a description of why this vision problem occurs, what can and cannot be seen, the types of lenses used for vision correction and how the lenses change the path of the light rays entering the eye.

I am nearsighted as well. My eyes suck, they have since childhood. All I see is silhouettes at a distance without contacts or glasses. The really strange thing is although my eyes are still awful, the eye Dr. says my eyes have improved by about 30% in the last 10 years. I never did anything but rotate wearing contacts and glasses like I always do. I figured eyes got worse as you got older, not better. As far as "farsightedness" goes, it seems weird as hell to think that some people basically have it switched. I couldn't imagine how it feels not being able to see close up.

i have a question about a person with myopia : so they put concave lenses so they can get a clear vision. But what happens if the eye accumulates WITHOUT a concave lens when the object is near? (I know that the eye without the accommodation with an object that is near makes a clear vision, but when the eye accomodates does it make the vision worse? (because there is more breaking of light?)

Can the diverging lens used to correct myopia cause eye muscles to strain more when reading at short distance?
I am short sighted and started recently experiencing a problem where when I wear glasses to see far objects, i cant focus on small letters while reading. I have to look outside my lens or take the glasses off and the small letters become clear even at short distances. Do i have hyperopia and myopia as well?
This is a recent experience and I never faced this problem while wearing glasses to correct my short sight. I have been wearing glasses to correct short sight since I was 8 years old and now I am 43.

Diagram for the 1st case is wrong........Eye is able to bend parallel light rays easily but isn't able to bend the diverging rays coming from the near objects.
As a result, it is able to see far object clearly as they are focussed on the retina whereas it can't see the near objects as it isn't able to converge them sufficiently due to low converging power of the lens.
