- Today's video is all about how to make an authentic Mofongo with pork chicharrrones! I love frying the green plantains just like I do whenever I make tostones and then mashing them with a garlic mojo sauce and sauted onions like the kind that I use whenever I make my Dominican Mangu! Give this classic Mofongo recipe a try and won't be disappointed. Don't forget to join the Chef Zee Family!

I’m Puerto Rican and black and unfortunately I wasn’t around my dad’s side of the family. I can cook, but I’ve been wanting to learn how to make food from the other half of my heritage. I’m thinking about making Puerto Rican food for Christmas this year and your channel is helping. So far the menu is Perníl, arroz con glandules, pink beans, coquito and now mmofongo. Thank you!!!
Puerto Ricans are Caribbean people, most have black since 98% of the population is mix with African some less some more but our culture is very rich and compatible with our West African ancestors.
I love what the Carribean has to offer when it comes to Platanos or in Ingles Plantains. Cuba is Fufú 🇨🇺 Dominican Republic is Mangú🇩🇴 and Puerto Rico is Mofongo 🇵🇷 that's is some real Carribean dishes. GOD BLESS THE CARRIBEAN!!
Hey actually for us dominicans is mofongo as well since the preparation from mangu differs, mangu is mashed plantains previously boiled in water while mofongo is mashed plantains in a pilon previously fried while you can add meat, garlic, oil etc to mofongo, mangu is good with butter and oil and can also be made with ripe plantains which is sweeter and softer
@@Aprilbird1991It’s not, mofongo is originally from Puerto Rico. I don’t know where the misconception is coming from or if this is on purpose, but mofongo originated in Puerto Rico as mangu originated in Dominican Republic. You can easily find this information online or books.
@@Aprilbird1991mofongo is a Puerto Rican dish. I'm glad everyone loves it, but credit where credit is due.
@@hectorrivera6624they didn’t say it was originally from dominican republic they just said we use the same name because the process is different from mangú 😁👍👍.
Mexican yoshi anyone

Thank you Chef Zee, for enabling us gringas to cocinar como Dominicanos!
Lol my pleasure! I hope that you enjoy! Thank you for watching!
👋❤😁 A Boricua here! I agree with perfuming the olive oil with garlic. Let that oil and garlic dance a passionate tango in the ollita or salten (small pot or pan). I add salt to my garlic and oil, and while mashing, I add cilantrillo, (cilantro) and very crunchy chicharron. Love it with ox tail!😁👍👋😊
I’m African and every time I’m craving for Dominican/Cuban food or want to cook it I always go to your channel, it looks so delicious and easy 🤤 I’ll definitely make it but without the chicharron since I don’t eat pork 🙌
Hey sis, I don’t eat pork either but you can make this with chicharon de pollo… chicken and the skin, but fry the skin .. it will be as good as the pork cracking!!! Enjoy !
@@jamilasalaam omggggg sounds really delicious I never thought of that!! Thank you for the suggestion ♥️
@@isatadiallo7458 you’re so very welcome 🌸
@@isatadiallo7458 I’ve made it with a fried egg in the middle instead of the pork. It’s instant breakfast and super delicious.
We did not adopt no gandules guisao.. are you crazy!! I dont know what you talking about! Since alittle girl in puertorico I would be with my mother picking gandules from the trees. We made gandules practically with everything! Wtf are you talking about??!! We make it as beans., soup, We add other things as well & Our Famous & Traditional ARROZ CON GANDULES!!!
In the northern Caribbean Coast of Colombia we have a similar dish to mofongo but instead of frying the plantains they are boiled. We mash the plantains, gently fry some chopped garlic and onion, add some chicharrón, mix all the ingredients together, make balls with all that mix and we call it, get ready for the funny name, cabeza de gato (cat's head) or cayeye. This recipe is made in Córdoba and Sucre, northern Caribbean Colombian coast.
Saludos. Amo tus recetas.
Probably with all the migration of Caribbean people to the Panama Canal.
My favorite.. will definitely be trying your way, I’ve never made it. But your recipes have never failed me

Hello Chef Zee. I absolutely LOVE Mofongo. I made a chorizo Mofongo, and it came out really good, but dry because I forgot to make the garlic sauce. I’m going to do it again really soon. Thank you for sharing.

Made this today it was delicious and easy! I also can’t have garlic because of my IBS, so I used garlic infused oil which I can have, and it was so good and still gave the mofongo the garlic taste! Thanks for the amazing recipe!
SO happy that you were able to find a substitution that worked! I'll definitely keep this mind. Thank you for sharing.

Love mofongo but you don't need guisadas for mofongo. You can easily enjoy mofongo with soup. It's actually more traditional with soup. In Puerto Rico we like to have bread with soup but sometimes we replace the bread with mofongo. It's amazing try it.
Been waiting for you to show me how to do this! Lol
This is the right receipe
I’m rating this right now and baby it’s so good I came to find a recipe video here I am

Another great dish 👏
Thank you !!
Love me some mofongo de camarones 🍤
Cool.
PR and DR cuisine are very similar, and this dish mofongo is made in both island nations. beans (habichuelas) is a term used in DR and PR only. other Latinos call it frijoles.
Is similar but not the same Dominican took this recipe from PR in the 60 when they started immigrating the island this recipe is original from Puerto Rico not DR
It originated in 1859 in the recipe book Cocinero Puertorriqueño
The original name to this recipe is
Mofongo Criollo
Sad to see that no credit is given to PR
and is only said is a Puertorrican and Dominican recipe when is not
@@tarivincenty9163 the real recipe is African and they belong to both islands ❤️.
@@tavroaar8173 Lies!!! That's like saying Mangu is ours too🙄
@@foxsy69 Mofongo is Puerto Rican and Mangu is Dominican. But they are both of African roots and therefore can belong to both ♥️
@@tavroaar8173They cannot belong to both, that’s not how it works with national dishes. It’s a fusion from fufu made in Puerto Rico, you can’t change history. If we claimed mangu y’all would be pissed.
Delicious
I like how slowly explain the recipe.
Thank you! That means a lot!
Another great dish chef, will you be doing any traveling where you visit authentic Latin restaurants ,I loved your Cuba episodes
Yes. I would love to do this again! Just waiting for things to settle down so we can travel again
You should make a video making peppers stuffed with ground beef, I would love to learn how you would make it! :)
Yummy
Definitely a mofongo de chicharron with a side of gravy from pollo guisado or carne de res guisado! Keep them coming Chef. Do you have a pata y mondongo cocido yet?

Awesome. Question, when you put oil in onions with the salt is that olive oil or curb oil? Thx!
Mofongo is life!
Yes it is!
@@Chefzeecooks I like it con el caldo de pollo but I don't want to make that myself. Do you have any store bought options para el caldo for the mofongo?
Looks easy enough. Now I just gotta know how to make chicharron lol
I just got into bed after a full dinner and this just made me grave mofongo.
Lol I've been there. Thank you for watching!!!
Que marca de sarten usas me podrias decir gracias
I like you a lot Chef Zee♥️♥️
Looks delicious! Could you make a Morongo with shrimp???
This looks so easy to make I’ll omit the pork bc I’m vegan but I’ll figure out what to substitute it with. Thanks 🙂
You can omit the pork and it will be vegan and OUT OF THIS WORLD! I make it without meat all of the time and you never feel like it’s missing something. That garlic sauce will take you places 🥳💕🔥
@@Chefzeecooks thank you so much! Even your arroz con gandules is vegan (I substitute the chicken bullion for vegetable bullion) 🥰
Omg I never thought to do that. I definitely will try that ASAP. I like to eat plant based a few times a week. My husband calls me “come hojas” 😂

YAY NYC., THE HEIGHTS !
can u do a video on white rice and red beans on the side
I would love to try this dish, and understood plantain is a major ingredient needed, is there an ingredient i can substitute plantain with cause is not accessible.
You can also put the planting in the microwave I think like for 30 seconds and it’s easier to peel the skin off
Mmmm deliciossooo
Thank you!!!
