  • The Hurco VM10i Plus is an upgraded, higher performance version of the best-selling VM10i 3 axis machining centre. This machine has a 12,000RPM spindle with chiller, the dual-screen Max 5 Hurco control, 20 bar coolant through the spindle and a swarf auger. The package delivers BIG machining centre performance within a tiny footprint.
Varlowe Industrial Services Limited is a family run business, based in Wolverhampton, offering a one-stop-shop for complete industrial services and installations. Now into its 21st year of operation, Varlowe is able to offer specialist pipework, including gas, industrial fabrications, welding services, mechanical and electrical installations and more recently, precision CNC machining services.
Owner and Contract Manager, Steve Varden is proud of the diverse customer base, listing hospitals, theme parks and major automotive suppliers as regular clients. Coverage is UK-wide, employing skilled tradesmen with fully fitted vans.
For Steve Varden, the decision to bring CNC machining in-house was a commercial necessity. In order to achieve the levels of supply quality and speed that his customers demand, he needed to take control of the process and become less reliant on subcontractors.
Whilst happy to acknowledge the aesthetic benefits of how great the Hurco machines look lined up in his super-clean workshop, he insists that the reason for choosing Hurco is because of the financial benefits. “The pricing of the machines is good, they are reliable, reasonably local to us, nice sales guy; Colin and the training is second to none. If I call for an engineer, they are here next day, no problem”. It means that Varlowe can concentrate on the services they perform best, whilst knowing they can support their customers with confidence in their machinery.
Varlowe take on specialist one-off work such as jigs and fixtures, prototype work and special purpose builds. Batch sizes are rarely more than 10-off. Materials machined vary greatly from engineering steels to plastics.
Describing the recently installed Hurco VMX60i, Mike Boylan of Varlowe says “It’s a fantastic machine that gives us the extra capacity that we didn’t have in the past, particularly for a variety of larger parts” and of the Hurcos in general “Great quality, small footprint, gives us everything we need to do 3 and 4 axis milling and turning”.
When it comes to programming, all operators are fully trained on the Hurco controls, meaning that one-offs are programmed directly at the machine, quickly and easily, avoiding bottlenecks.
If needed, CADCAM is also available. The second screen on the WinMax control is then seen as a big benefit, allowing the toolpath and finished component to be viewed on one screen, whilst the program is viewed on the other, eliminating human error.
Regular servicing and the use of in-house CMM Inspection ensure that all accuracies are maintained on the machines. This really helps throughput and the efficiency of the production process.
The latest investment into new machinery now brings the number of Hurco machines on-site up to 10. Bringing the precision CNC machining in-house has allowed Varlowe to take control of costs and margins and thereby free money to invest in their people. Thereby maintaining and developing a skilled workforce for the future.
