    I can believe the "AW" combination is /a:/ from throat, but as for the "ONG" combination is still /a:/ is hardly used by speakers,

    the packaged chicken broth ...hmm... it doesn't look, smells or tastes like a chicken broth...might as well shake a whole chicken above a boiling pot of water and call it a chicken broth. Especially this brand.

      yes, merging ɔ with ɑ to ɒ
      The author doesn't merge but you can if you want to, it depends on the state you live in. About 70% of Americans merge them I guess. Maybe a bit less then 70, but definitely more than a half

      What I understand is that in the East coast stalk and stop are pronounced with the different vowel sounds, but in the west coast is pronounced with the same vowel sound as in stop a:
