I remember my teacher explaining the history of French Revolution with this song and exactly this video and honestly Iâm glad he did, because every time I hear this song I remember what he told us âThe humanâs worst enemy is the human itselfâ
Thanks for sharing this. â„ïž
The song is not about the french revolution. They just picked the picture for this music video.
He sings about a king in general and his religious believs
@@markbrix9385 no the song is about king louis XVI who was king under the french revolution, The lyrics are his lost final speech that he held before he wad executed but no one could hear it because the crowd was screaming and shouting

@@arjun2302 Eh. This version seems like a nice homage to the song, but the official video captures the energy of the music better.
â@@ConservativePunkTV Si te fijas este video tiene mucha similitud al de Enjoy the silence de Depeche Mode
This is literally one of the greatest songs ever written.
Absolutely agree with you. Some of the live versions give me actual goosebumps watching them. They should all have been awarded an Ivor Novello for this masterpiece.
I was listening to this on the bus as I entered Jerusalem (after travelling from Galilee) for the first time, when I paused (just after the first line of the chorus) I could actually Jerusalem's bell's a ringing, it was a very fitting thing to listen to at such a beautiful moment.
That's pretty awesome.
Not as much so as a nation that locks up people for not believing in the state religion
But did you hear the Roman Calvary Choir singing?
@@99certain45 I agree with you. Every person should have the right to choose and exit any type of religion.
Fuck all religions
That painting Chris Martin is carrying around, the cover art for their album, was created by Eugene Delacroix in 1830, depicting Lady Liberty in living human form leading the people while waving the French flag. The Revolutionaries are portrayed as the heros. But the lyrics are loosely based on the lost final speech of King Louis XVI before he was executed. The speech is lost because his words were drowned out by the screams and boos and the drums of the hate-filled crowd. The lyrics somewhat humanize the king, it reminds us that we're all just human inside, no matter what our position or title is (just a puppet on a lonely string, oh who would ever want to be king?). The song is of regret, sorrow, apology, he knows he'll be damned to hell (I know St. Peter won't call my name) and acceptance of his fate.
The name Viva la vida (Spanish for Long live life) came from a painting Chris saw by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. She suffered great physical pain, an injured spine, polio, yet here she was painting a big beautiful masterpiece, and as Chris stated in an interview, he loved the 'boldness' of it.
Thanks for explaining . I appreciate it

The video is better than the official, more represent the lyrics
That's sort of the problem with it. Viva la Vida is a song steeped in metaphor. I see the lyrics represent the potentially sad process of ageing, and losing the energy of youth. The fact that this video is so literal sort of breaks that for me.
off course
representation doesn't mean literalness
the video is in homage to Depeche Modes Enjoy the silence video, Chris Martin is a fan.. both videos are directed by Anton Corbjin Depeches visual director. x
Yes, but I think that both have its own essence. You know, both have the king with the swanky clothes walking throght lonely landscapes, but that's all.
The Enjoy the silence have more naturalistic landscape and with the exception of the portable chair, it feels timeless and bring satisfaction.
By other way, this one use more urbanistic landscapes and that make the king looks obsolete, a memory of another times, and the portrait of La liberté (pretty ironic, in my opinion) make the king more miserable, you know, in the Depeched Mode video the chair is all the the king needs, in this one, the portrait is all the king gets. It makes, in my opinion , a more melancholic enviroment in this one.
This is just my personal interpretation, but I got to express it somewhere. Sorry if that bother or borers you.
Anton Corbijn is a genius. I can see his masterwork "Enjoy The Silence" coming back here.

The song of Luis XVI, minutes before being guillotined.
Alvaro A. Was he a bad guy?
Jerome Momin What happened was during the time of Louis and Marie Antionette was that the public were poor and they weren't giving anything to them and the public got outraged. It caused the French Revolution and they were both decapitated for the way they treated people. The rebels wanted freedom and that's what they did, if you know how to type and to know about Coldplay, may I ask how have you never heard of the French Revolution before?
IM NOT THE ONLY ONE !!!
Alvaro A. "now in the morning I sleep alone, sweep the streets I used to own" doesn't make sense if it were based off him

Notice this video ends near a beach which looks very similar to the one from the yellow video, which was their first hit, reminding me of the lyric "Let's go back to the start", from the scientist, incorporating their three biggest hits at the time into one song.

I just wanna say this video is so much more impactful than the original. It's like someone came out of time and saw how his former kingdom is moving on without him. This is how you make an emotional video
This is the first time I have watched and heard the song. Feels like I've been reborn.
1:05 LET ME INNN
LET ME IIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNN
2:43 the combo of that infinite view and the sentence"but that was when I rule the world", is breathtaking, like if each of us was once able to do something imposible, great job.
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you're gone there was never
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Woahahahah oh, woahahah oh
Woahahahah oh, woahahah oh,
Woahahahah
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
