It was top in the Reality Show category, at a time when that category had begun to dwindle out. And the reason was that it was the one reality show with actual celebrities, not reality show nobodies.
And sure, part of the reason for that was Trump bringing his fame to the the show. Because typically someones with Trumps relative level of fame back then, would not bother working in a reality show. But Trump was broke. No bank wanted to lend him money, so that show was his way to wealth again.

I don't watch those shows because of the misnomer 'reality show'. Most are elaborate game shows while others are highly edited manipulations of particular situations.
