    I’ve been doing ice baths 5 days a week for the last 2-3 months . And I find myself like doing it in the morning more because I feel fresh and more energetic for the day. Weird how people can have opposite affects. Great video!

    I started wim hoff method almost 10 years ago. Most bang per input for me was the first step. As follows: everytime you shower, in the middle of the shower you turn to all the way cold and do that for 1minute while breathing deep and slow. Then you can go warm again.
    After this i rarely got sick and havent felt cold since (i felt cold all the time, everywhere before)

    After a very long run, a 20 minute ice bath followed by elevating your legs for 20 minutes (ideally while wearing compression pants) can reduce recovery by a full day. I understand that a post workout ice bath may reduce hypertrophy, but you have to consider what is your goal. When I was doing this it was strictly for run recovery and it worked out great. It also helped me cool down and stop the muscle damage quicker after the workout and led to me feeling back to normal about an hour or so after the run. It also allowed me to have a light run the next day which also helped me to avoid a lot of soreness. In addition; since your body is very overheated after a long run, the ice bath is only uncomfortable for the first minute and after that is actually enjoyable.

    Cold adaptation is definitely a real thing. In the polar vortex winters in MI I spent so much time outside shoveling snow that by the end of it I was out there in a t-shirt and gloves at 10F and feeling comfy.

      @@elowynnbird The alternative was sweating my butt off while digging my driveway clear. I didn't set out to do it, just kept shedding layers trying to stay comfortable. After 30 days in a row below -10F, positive 10 felt downright hot.

    Don't know if you'll read this comment but after resistance training MPS (muscle protein synthesis) is elevated anywhere from 48-72hours so as ice baths dull MPS if you take an ice bath within 72 hours of workouts you will actually decrease muscle hypertrophy

      @@uniktbrukernavn exactly unless you space each training session apart by 4 days there is no world ice baths benefit strength athletes or bodybuilding. It may have some benefit for long distance runners and combat sports.

    another thing i think is interesting is that the body wants to adapt, so maybe it would be beneficial like you said to not do ice baths too often, to maximize the benefits. otherwise its just adapting to something unfun like cold water. or to switch from warm to cold water, or cold to warm water, idk
    and combining the ice bath with the wim hof method for cold weather tolerance is something that people have had good results with!
    that pre-workout formula is pretty interesting, i'd like to see more experimental data on that from people :D
    I myself have done a few cold showers that help wake up my mind when im feeling down and starting to get depressed, and same with the wim hof breathing method, but i can find it really overwhelming at times because i get dizzy from the breathing, and the tingling sensation is a bit overwhelming, but afterwards after my body calms down i always feel really refreshed and mentally centered, and calmer.
    And combining that with red light therapy would probly be great too! combining all the healthy ideas into a schedule that works out well
    I know bryan johnson is sorta doing that with his extensive anti-aging routine, as well
    and combining that with things like the "knees over toes guy's exercises for longevity could only lead to more positive results, i think. there's also this exercise czcams.com/video/0euDDJu6GnQ/video.html for longevity and endurance/stamina, and altho im mostly a non-weight exerciser myself, i respect the weight lifting too

    most research I've seen described is 'you only need about 11 minutes a WEEK..." not 5 minutes a day.

    In my experience, the biggest factor for HRV is stress. Cold exposure is stressful. I think it would be better to be shortening the cold sessions to just 2-3 min and only doing them a few times/week. I think the workouts + ice baths were increasing your stress and fatigue on your body.
    I workout MWF, T/R are my rest days and thats when I sauna and cold shower. My HRV is typically in the 60s pretty consistently. That way you don't have to deal with the pro/con of ice baths in relation to a workout and you aren't over stressing your body.
    There is also an issue with getting too adapted to the cold which takes away from some of its benefits.

      Agree. I was thinking the same while watching the video and spesifically on that part when he was thinking that overdose and excessive stress by doing too much stressful things at the same day might explain the results. Rather than cutting off workout or ice bath some occasional day,, he didn't mention shortening the time of ice bath exposure as a one alternative. There is a wide understanding among the ice bath/swimming community that when starting the ice bathing or ice swimming, (latter being in popular especially in Nordic Countries) you should start from very little first. First sessions should be just quickly dipping there or be in the water half a minute or maximum of one minute. Then, when you get more and more experienced and adapted, you can increase the dose and exposure periodically from that. Dude was starting from five minutes right away. Too much stess too much too often is always not that good idea. Progress could go even backwards.

      Honestly 5 minutes is ridiculous especially if you are not used to cold exposure. Even 30 seconds should be enough to get the effect you are after. And afterwards you shouldn't need anything fancy to warm up, your body is so awake that it should be warming itself. Feeling cold for a long time after cold exposure just sounds like too much time spent in the cold.

    Solid focus dude 🤘. I've also been getting ice baths recently especially when injured or on rest days and one thing to note is that the cold water coming out of the tap will be variable depending on the season and where you live. Here in eastern Canada for e.g. in summer I would make ice by filling 6 x 6L plastic containers in a chest freezer and this brought the water to 12C/53F. In Fall this went down to 8.5C/47F. Rn in winter the water coming out of the tap is 5C so no ice is actually needed as the ideal range is 10C-15C for the therapeutic benefits. This is probably why it felt so much colder when you tried it 🥶

    I started taking cold showers in the afternoons/evenings every day starting this September until I got sick a couple weeks ago, I don't think I got cold from the showers I just didn't want to stress the body more while it was fighting something. It's getting pretty cold here as well so I haven't done it much recently, last one was three days ago. Overall I feel refreshed usually, it always feels warm getting out of the shower, the tolerance has been building steadily while the water is also getting colder. Jumped in a couple coldish lakes recently and being submerged is a totally different feeling.

    Dude we look and speak so alike it’s blowing my mind, a friend sent me your vid doing the splits years ago and I was like ok cool it’s me but in better shape, but now this one popping up a year into my personal ice bath journey, I had to reach out.     I believe that most studies in cold plunges the main consensus is aim for 11 minutes a week. When I first started I’d just try to make it a minute and then beat that next time and slowly progress to the 11 minutes a week. I would have never survived if I jumped straight to 5 minutes .
    I would do it every couple of days and have been doing it for about 2 months and now I’m on day 20 consistently every morning. I did them last winter but stopped when it got too warm out.
    I now can relax in it for 3 -7 minutes just depends on the day. I also got a stock tank that sits outside, the winter keeps it cold, no need for ice, more room than a bath tub and it’s nice to hear the birds and look at the sky in a meditative state while in there.
    I feel like if I had to do it in my house I wouldn’t want to because I’m already in my comfort zone . To each their own but in my experience the cold plunge has been the best thing I’ve done for myself.

      I love doing my ice baths, but I need to do it inside. I tend to have peaceful nature sounds on before hoping in to try and mimic doing it in nature.

    Here are some video suggestions for you:
    only plyometrics workouts
    exercises in cold environment vs hot environment
    intensily stretch after a workout (Ive heard it could boost muscle growth)
    contract and extend your muscles quickly. Its like plyometrics + flexing ( example: quickly extend and contract your arm, so your biceps and triceps)

    i do ice baths on a regular basis for a bout 2 years now (especially in the winters) im a professional parkour athlete and put a ton of stress on my body with 7 days a week workouts and a lot of other things that are more mentally.
    i feel like the ice bath is a destressor, as while im getting in i get a spike of stress, after about 20 seconds i start to feel very zen like, even feels like after sitting still for a minute i can feel an outline around my body wich feels warm (this goes away as i move). i have 0 thoughts in my head at that point and i get out when im fully adapted or start getting cold again. when getting out i have a numb feeling in both hands and feet but feel very warm after getting out
    i generally feel more energized afterwards and go into the day with i clear head without any worries. alltough on some days it feels like it drains a lot of energy and i can’t get into that zen meditative kindoff state, also going for workouts on these days i feel more heavy.
    i find an ice bath easier to handle then a cold shower. and it helps me keep up with the stress of all the other things going on and balances out everything.
    if i where to take ice baths in the evening i would not be able to sleep for the next 3 hours minimum, due to the release of adrenaline i think.

    My impression is that a lot of the benefit of cold shower/baths is from that shock period, which tapers off after a minute or so. Whenever I do a cold shower (which I do at the end of a hot shower), I just stop when I start feeling like my breathing is coming back under control. Or if I'm feeling ambitious, I'll do a few cycles of a Scottish shower with each cold phase just getting me through the shock phase.

    I've used simple cold exposure then waiting until shivering violently to dress up and then once warm going for a long run. I tend not get DOMS as I take a heaping teaspoonful of MSM in the morning. I got good gains on the track speeds.

    I think ice baths would be really useful during a multi-event competition, like between races when running multiple track races in a day. You'll get that reduction in inflammation and be able to start fresher after already exerting your muscles.

    Can you do a biphasic sleep experiment for maybe a month? You would go to sleep when the sun goes down, trying to keep artificial light at night as low as possible. The low amount of night should make you naturally tired. Then, you wake up in the middle of the night, preferably four hours after going to sleep. You stay awake for a couple hours then go back to sleep until the sun rises or there is light in the sky. It works best if you naturally wake up in the middle of the night instead of having an alarm to wake you.

    On my channel, Scott Lives, I made a few videos on ice baths back in 2021. I did them every other day back in late 2020 when the gyms were closed. Another fun thing to explore is that doing ice baths just for your face is supposed to be good for your skin, an aging/beauty hack. I do ice for my face occasionally. Anyhow, this is the best ice bath video I have seen yet, way more thorough than mine were.

    Yeah, this is one of those things I don't think I'll ever do. I don't mind the outside cold weather too much, especially when I can be active and get my internal heat going nicely, but just sitting still in freezing cold water is a no go.

    It all depends on your training schedule. I'm an evening lifter, so i like cold 1st thing in the morning, i go to work, come home an eat then an hour or so later i lift, then hit the sauna, warm shower then sleepy time. Generally 5 times a week, i take 2 days off from everything except my walking.

    Heat and movement betters your recovery. The adrenaline that you get from an ice bath. Heats your body up more. So I feel like 5 minutes is way too long. You don't want to get cold. That slows down your blood. That inflammation repairs your body.

    I think that from begining like 1 minute then 2-3 minutes are enough for beginner and everything from that point is worse for beginner, also after im doing it post workout im really liking it so much more.

    Personally for me this would more than likely make my condition worse i have Degenerative disc disease L4-L5 lateral tear and bulging disc also arthritis in my hands and feet but for me i love a nice hot bath it helps my recovery with my back and workouts.

    Here's the real effect. I live in Roseburg Oregon where it gets around 35 to 45° right now. But you know what I wear? A tank top and shorts most of the days or at least the tank top and some joggers. Walk around like that every day you don't have to worry about taking a 20 minute ice bath.

    I did cold showers directly before my workout and I got the craziest pump I ever experienced.
    With a good warmup is this probably a smart way to do it

    Uma coisa que ouvi falar vindo de canais de pessoas formadas em educação física e terapias é que não se deve tomar banho gelado depois de fazer musculação e não tomar até 10 horas depois de ter feito musculação. Pq o banho gelado tira a inflamação que ocorre nos tecidos pq a inflamação pós exercício é ir vai gerar a hipertrofia!

    Did you happen to measure the temperature of the ice bath water? Cuz I was thinking you can get cold ass water for free straight from the tap and then just stay in it longer so the amount of torturing is the same

    I think ice baths can be a good way to relieve mental stress, in the way that when your mind is running w too many thoughts, that shock of cold water puts your right in the present moment and focus on breathing.

    HRV goes up significantly when you are breathing deeply, so that's why it's going up while you're in the bath. Do breathing exercises sat in a chair and you'll have the same effect. Mine goes up to 160 when I'm box breathing

    at an apt i lived years ago they would close the pool for the winter cuz it cost to much to heat but the hot tub would be open. i would jump in both. felt the best i ever had going from one to the other

    I live in the north west of England and been doing ice bath since the end of summer put ice in but now since it winter and I do it out side I don't add ice because I dont want the water to be so cold it's become dangerous but the ice formed by it self someday I normally do it after breakfast then when I come out I normally have a cup of coffee and relax in bed before a work out it normal work for me

    I have a potential experiment for you. Try getting physically warmed up by wearing lots of layers 30min-60min before your workout. I think it can help save time on your warmup in the gym. I have a few injuries and i try to only workout with my body physically warm so i always do this . At least close to breaking a sweat. Idk how practical this is and i am just a gym rat but it makes sense to me and im curious what others think.

    You should DIY a cold plunge, take a 55 gallon drum cut the top off and keep it outside (to not blow all your money on ice🤣)

    Ice bath experience is quite close to panic attacks and it has helped people to handle panic attacks. It is not like full remedy but it is helpful and could talked more.

    Just for reference, it looks like Wim Hoff was doing "cloud hands" which is part of the Yang-style Tai Chi set. You can look up how to do it a bit better if you'd like now that you know the name but a quick tip is to pretend you're holding a stretchy ball in your hands and rotate around the ball as you go side to side.

    There are a few phases to an ice bath. I feel like I have to be in it for quite some time before my body actually calms down. Usually 10 minutes for me. It gets worse before it gets better.

    ive taken cold showers every morning for around 6 months now and its never gotten easier. i dont rlly think there are any benefits but discipline and a little energy boost in the morning
    granted cold showers arent nearly as cold as an ice bath still cold nonetheless!

    In terms of HRV you are better taking overnight measurement for longitudinal data point, rather than a one off moment. HRV is also very individual. I am 55 year old male and although I exercise I am no athelete. My HRV averages (when we’ll recovered around the 90 to 100 mark. That is just individual genetics as the usual range is around 40 for someone with me demographics

    After doing cold showers for quite a while iIsubmerged for longer, especially the face and neck, and now I have angina. So just don’t overdo it, otherwise it’s great.

      That means you probably have arterial blockages near your heart.
      Try getting a CAC scan if possible to see if you have any arterial plaque.

    So for the next video. Throw a bucket of ice water over your head before every workout and see if you get similar results. I wouldn’t do ice baths but just dunking my head before workouts. I’ll try that.

    i love the thesis of this video. i have been skeptical of the benefits and the answer was maybe obvious-everything in moderation. imo this “biohack” is actually just a unique form of meditation that requires you to focus on breathing and the cold rather than other things. it’s a shame that it’s actually stressing your body out in the process lol

    20-30 minutes of light cardio right after the ice bath is the way to go. Use light exercise to recover from the ice bath. That’s the only way my lifting workouts later in the day have become unaffected by taking ice baths.

    You should try sleeping on the floor, I’ve been doing it for a few weeks and I feel way more energetic in the morning, it’s easier to fall asleep, and it’s really good at fixing lower back pain

    Cold causes white fat cells to utilize their stores of vitamin A to transform into brown fat cells where they begin burning their own energy stores to create heat. So your fat begins to burn itself. Cold also causes a very high growth hormone increase as the body expects it will need to start burning more fat and shivering muscles for warmth, like a bear or other hybernating animals during winter seasons where food becomes scarce the body has this fasting ketosis effect to boost energy and fat burn during those months where it cannot find enough foods for energy.
    This makes ice baths very synergistic with extended water fasting and cardio, therefore taking the bath when you are fasted before eating in the morning and then doing cardio would be best. Instead of eating and lifting weights icebaths benefit cardio and fasting catabolic states much better than the anabolic muscle building stuff.
    The opposite causes problems because as soon as you eat your blood thickens with all the nutrients you ate so then the vasoconstriction of cold causes slower blood flow and potentially even strokes and clots it can kill somepeople especially cigarette smokers and obese peoplewith high blood pressure, while also not being able to utilize the fat cells and growth hormone for warmth due to glucose and insulin taking the wheel instead duringthis time if food was ate prior.
    Similar to the effects of caffeine or cocaine, if you are fasted those are perfectly fine but if your blood is too thick the vasoconstrictionof those substances actually makes you more tired since oxygen isn't reaching the brain and they also cause strokes and clots
    Think ofan ice bathin that same catagory as a stimulantconstricting vessels, you don't want to over eat before so it works best on a cutting diet rather than bulking and the after fatigue is the same as coming off caffeine and cocaine or other stimulants it is adrenal fatigue and also a slight dopamine withdrawal which can be alleviated with things that increase serotonin like 5htp and milk or coco, or vitamin b6 that blocks prolactin and makes the brain feel ok with less dopamine
    In general if you're taking ice baths while cutting or fasting and doing lotsof cardio not only the experience itself will be much more beneficial but also the lethargy and after effects would be lessened.
    If you look at wild animals you would notuce cold is much more powerful in assisting a catabolic food scarcity state rather than anabolic relaxation muscle building. The focus of cold is burning fat for both warmt and energy while preserving muscle but not necessarily building muscle. When a bear wakes up in spring it is much skinnier and suuuuuperhorny and virile due to an extreme increase in growthhormone and reduction in things like aromatisation from fat cells and prolactin release. It wakes up with so much aggression qnd energy and hunger ready to have explosive sex with every female it finds and murder every other living thing. A bear before hybernation is very different than one after hybernation. Basically every spring bears turn into ultimate killing machines and sex gods.
    The cold and fasting are to thank for that lol.
    Sorry this was long, I hope it helps somepeople understand the natural purposes of cold/ice baths and how the body uses it particularly for cutting while people often make the mistake of trying to use it for bulking were it doesn't shine very well and could potentially even hurt gains because it's making the body want to burn and cut like a strong stimulant like cocaine instead of helping with anabolic stuff
    Like if you take too much preworkout you're basically ruining the point of the weight lifting because all the stimulants make you morecatabolic than anabolic especially with cortisol increases and reducing sleep. Taking ice baths while trying to bulk is like smoking methamphetamine and expecting to eat more food and gain weight, it's two opposite things working against each other. Triggering a shit ton of adrenaline and dopamine and HGH and cortisol are all extremely stimulatory catabolic hormones but then expecting to bulk andbe catabolic is backwards, it's just creating a lot of adrenal fatigue and calorie burning that counters the attempts at bulking. To bulk you need to maximise recovery parasympathetic anabolic states which means avoiding adrenal hormones like dopamine norepinepherine and cortisol in favor of testosterone and serotonin-melatonin

    The evidence suggests a number of things you need to be aware of. Most people go too cold and too long. Inducing a hyperthermia state isn’t the aim. You want the “cold shock” effect and so 30 to 60 seconds is enough. Again 12 Celsius is cold enough. Remember that we are warm adapted apes from an evolutionary point of view. It might help recovery but you will lose much of the hypertrophy gains. Also for best results on study suggested 20 mins sauna then 30 seconds plunge and repeat has real benefits. Doing the whole Wim Hoff thing is more to do with breathing and everyone’s wish to look tough.
