sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you split it? pretty new to tying and have yet to use zonker strips for anything other than, well, zonkers. Really nice tie btw

Not dumb at all. I take a regulations 1/8" zonker strip and I put the end in my vise, with the hair pointing down, skin side towards me. I take a curved autopsy scalpel blade in my hand and and carefully drag it down the skin splitting it. Xacto blad would probably work just as well. Hope that helps

So why do you tie the strip down near the bend if youve already stabbed it through? I tie my own version of this and its pretty unnecessary for my tie, just wondering if there is a purpose aside from lashing it down. Dont get me wrong though bruv, this is a great pattern.

I do it because the varying skin quality and thickness. I have had the tail break off in the past prior to the fly being worn out. It also gives me a "hard stop" to back the dubbing up to while maintaining a consistent length.

    Great pattern dude!!
What size leader/tippet would you recommend for this?! I've got a 9' 5wt.
Thanks and have a great week!!

      Thank you!
It's going to depend a lot on the fish and the water you are fishing. I'm limited to a single fly and am lucky enough to have some nice bull trout locally, I will typically use 5x. If you are indicator nymphing you can probably get away with heavier tippet and just add some shot

Fly fishing is a leader no weight attached! The idea is to bring the fish up in the water column to take the fly not weight the fly

Your idea of fly fishing. That’s your idea. And most of us fly fishers will admit, your idea is stupid.

Certainly that is one way to look at it, but imposing your interpretation on the rest of us is silly. The sport has evolved a lot in the last hundred years

Not all insects are in or on the top of the water column. They're floating all through it. Bottom to top. Common knowledge, friendo.
