  • Every garden should have a Catmint (Nepeta) as there are many varieties to choose from. Add it to your herb border and use in cooking or plant it for the pollinators, it's blue-grey flowers and fragrant foliage will keep bringing you and the wildlife plenty of joy. And as a bonus it's tough and super easy to care for! So - get planting!

    It looks beautiful! This is my first year growing nepeta and I have loved how great it looked all summer long even in the heat of the summer :)

    Thank you for showing pruning/cutting back. Exactly what I needed because my catmint was starting to fade. 🌿

      You're very welcome 😊
      The plant is so tough, and 1/3 of a cut after the first flush of flowers is going to give you another burst, smaller flower spikes, but more of them 💚
      You can also give it a small sprinkling of chicken manure pellets or fish blood and bone, and water it after 💚🌿

      So worth to grow 💚😊 A pleasure to see how the bees love it 💚. I also have a smaller version '' Kit Cat'' which is also beautiful 🐱

    I've bought some seeds which I planted about a month or two ago and now have four plants in pots in the greenhouse , as I planted them late the packet says that they should be overwintered in a cold frame and then planted out next year . Not sure which variety it is and we're hoping the cats like it , luckily I am intending to plant them against a south facing shed wall . Thank you for an interesting video and the dog giving a paw was a highlight for me . 🙂🐶😺

      Well done for growing them from seed 👏 😀 you will appreciate the plants way more once you've grown them like that. They are a stunning and bee friendly plant. This summers growth (quite wet) astounded me.The variety I have (six hills giant) has been really loving it and even after our first frost just yesterday, still is looking gorgeous. I'm really tempted to propagate it and plant another area with it 🐝 🐝 🐝 bees absolutely love it 😍 Thank you for your lovely comment, I hope your nepetas will bring you plenty of joy 😊 and best wishes from us 👩‍🌾🐶🥰

      That's so good to hear 👏 🥰 as the bees will thank you for it, I think they are stunning plants and mine is totally covered with bees, they're not going near salvias or lavender when the Nepeta and Lupin are flowering 💚🌿

    does this particular variety have a strong smell that attracts cats? I love this and would like to plant around my trees. not sure how well it might do around the base of my magnolias (zone 9 in houston tx)

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi, the Nepeta gigantea "Six Hills Giant" is supposed to have a strong lemony scent, but in reality, it doesn't. Also, it is not attracting any cats per se. They definitely like the soft soil in the kitchen garden beds 🤭🤭 But bumble bees and butterflies 🦋 adore the plant, I'm planning to add more of it to the garden areas 😍
      Leave a couple of foot clear circle around the trunk of your magnolia tree 🌳 and plant the catmint then, you can also get smaller varieties than the Six Hills Giant 💚🌿

    How did you retain the roots to stop it spreading? I have very free draining soil & don’t want it taking over like mint but would like a hedge like yours 👍

    • @spudsandroses

      Hi! Our ground is quite stoney already but the raised bed side is pure stone/gravel from area being filled when the house was built. I have the Nepeta area slightly raised and on the veg side I have a heavily mulched footpath but nothing else as a barrier. I'm hoping the no composted/manured ground is enough to keep it from spreading 🤞 if you think you need to create a more solid barrier underground then you probably need to go down to 2feet-thats how deep they spread in my rose planters 🌿💚

    I wish I could understand your accent. I'm looking for tips on how often to water a newly planted nepeta.

    • @spudsandroses
      @spudsandroses  Před rokem

      Hi, no worries at all 😊 the watering applies to all perennial plants the same, not just specifically to Nepeta - every newly planted plant should be kept moist for the first year, especially during the dry seasons.if you check the soil moisture below the top 1 inches of soil (2,5cm) and it is dry, then its time to water. If you get natural rainfall regularly, then the rain probably is doing the watering for you 😊Hope it helps 💚🌿
