Western films can have such strange translations / Japanese movie titles. - Komedie
I used a reverse version of this activity for my students in Japan, thanks for the idea! They were all astounded that the movie they know as "Uncle Carls Sky Flying House" is just called "Up" in English.
@Yukikaze Logistics Ch
Americans have a thing for shorter titles, e.g. "Amelie" or "Ponyo"
i realize I'm kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released series online ?
@Abdullah Gideon flixportal :P
@Sebastian Valentin thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it !
@Abdullah Gideon Happy to help =)
I was so happy when I discovered that the Japanese title of the recent game “Resident Evil: Biohazard” was “Biohazard: Resident Evil”.
Well, Biohazard is the real name of the game and that's how Japan calls it since the first one in 1998 (iirc), it only got translated to Resident Evil for the exported version because "Biohazard" was not available in the US.
"The JET alt that stayed behind": a 2019 comedy starring Chris Broad and Natsuki Aso.
Even in France we sometimes translate english movie titles into... english. For example, "The Hangover" is called "Very Bad Trip" (lit.). Why!?
Probably because most people in France know what a bad trip is. Easier to understand than the word hangover I think.
Here in Brazil it's called
"Se Beber Não Case" which means "don't drink and marry"
And Hot Tub Time Machine is called "A Ressaca" which means... "The Hangover"!
In spanish its called: What happened yesterday?
@@kelkel6371 There is a French term for hangover, though, ("guele de bois"). It's not a phenomenon that is only known in the English speaking world.
@@reginabillottiIt is spelled "Gueule de bois". I know. I'm French. ;)
OMG I went to high school with Jason! I never knew he was famous lol this is so weird! What are the odds that one of my old classmates would randomly show up in a video I clicked on!? I guess it's a small world, after all.
I think it's easy to pass up how good you are at making up movie title mistranslations.
And I thought German movie titles are stupid. This is a whole nother level!
Little Bonus:
Example for stupid, irrational, horrible choices of movie titles for German audiences:
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall
"Never again sex with the ex-girlfriend"
- Alien
"Alien - The scary creature from a foreign world"
- Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
deutscher Titel: Voll auf die Nüsse, transl. "(hit hard) In the nuts"
And mein personal favorite:
Tomorrowland (deutscher Titel: "A World Beyond"... yeah, they just gave it a different English titel that's even more complicated like WHAT THE FUCK?!?!)
I lost my tea at "Voll auf die Nüsse"!!
And then we Dutch people go around saying Germans don't have humour!
@@theramendutchman Of course we have humour. We take our humour very serious here!
@@lars7935 Wait. That's not how this works?!
@@theramendutchman It is. You just don't understand our very serious humour ;)
Just wait until you come to Brazil, titles are weirder
I'm actually extremely happy that I did horribly on this quiz because I can now call myself Occasional Chicken Teriyaki. Well done.
Side note, I was sent here by Abroad in Japan, so thanks to him. Haha
I owe Chris a high five haha
I knew Sugar Rush because it's the only song AKB48 had on Spotify for a long time.
haha thanks this is an old video ^^

I'm as entertained by the choices as I was by the actual answers.
Love this vid, Dogen!
haha thanks man
11:53 If gamers didn't know this question they need to play Resident Evil 7: Biohazard....
Wait.
Hahahah - "The JET ALT that Stayed Behind" I am stealing this!
Hey! I found your videos from a few years ago last year and enjoyed them, glad to see you uploading again! fun video, Definitely will keep watching :]
+zzqsk ` thanks so much! sorry for the long gap :) a lot of new content coming soon!!
I love his "wait", so I watch this video everyday .
This was fun. Keep them coming.
+bluzytrix thanks Bluzy!! planning on releasing more things like this soon! :D really appreciate the support!
Seeing how you spelled Ben Affleck:
*_Look how they massacred my boy._*
1:42 It can't be 3), because the japanese wouldn't understand that depravity as ninjas.
Kevin Gogogo!!!!
+ShenLimTV thanks man!! will keep this pace up!
nice video keep them coming
+Daniel Adeleye thanks man! definitely will do! gonna try more in this style as well :)
Here in Brazil, movie titles have weird names too.
Sometimes they are confusing.
Would love to see you guys tricking!
That "wait" reaction needs to be a meme.
I only got two wrong, PURELY by fluke. Why can't I fluke my way through everything like that?
This is too funny. I had to make sure to stop drinking water each time before Dogen asks the next question.
All you need is kill
This is great!!
This was super fun! I didn't know any answer except for the Resident Evil one (a friend of mine is a well known Resident Evil 4 speedrunner... 😅), but I guessed a couple others correct (didn't keep score though).
It would have been nice to have the actual Japanese titles in the second part of the quiz, I really wanted to know those. 😁
Thanks for watching!
I've actually read All You Need is Kill, and it's great. Some notable differences from the film and a more resonant relationship than what you get from Cruise and Blunt. Edge of Tomorrow is still good though
That was actually a great quiz. :'D Got 14 right, though I never thought I'd learn so much by guessing Japanese movie translations.
+TsunTsunSweetie So glad to hear that you enjoyed the quiz! :D That's quite a high number...one of the highest I've heard so far! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy more new content soon :)
I'm really good at guessing. =w=)b No problem, looking forward to it! Thanks for your hard work~
+TsunTsunSweetie Wish I could have borrowed your skills for the SAT. haha
Incidentally the new video is up! Thanks again for the support!
I find myself in thine description of a weeaboo once again Dogen-san. Truly, thou shineth a light upon my twisted, Japan loving person.
I am apparently a Weeaboo-- though I just started using the patented technique of guessing like I was a running my answers through Babelfish about 3 times mixed with a dash of 'wut.' Captain Supermarket got me pretty good.
HAHAHA excellent description. Captain Supermarket is definitely my favorite.
Hey! Mr Dogen. You speak English very well‼️ :)
9:00
Its been a couple years since I heard Link scream his lungs out, thanks for that
spread the love brother
Every time I heard it, I cracked up!
By the second part Jason had understood japanese naming thought process of making the least sense possible in the titles.
Am I the only one to pause to read subtitles, just to see how much I can understand from them, even though I don't need them because I speak and understand English?
Leave It to Beaver is called Beaver-chan and nothing prepared me for that
Doomtrain was the coolest GF in FF8 hands down!
definitely the most unique and original! I'm a Tonberry fan tho lol
I personally really like Diablos. But Shiva holds close to my heart as she has always been amazing through out the series.
Some of Japanese boys in my childhood called TMNT KAME NINJA.
I knew about half of these from Chris's video. XD
~:~
Dogen
That was a fun watch. But not uncommon in other languages. German movies used to have really bad titles. And some of them still do. The funniest ones to me are the ones that add subtitles (as in alternate titles) or also change it to a different English title, though usually less nonsensical. An example of the first one would be Ridley Scott's "Alien", which was turned into "Alien - The Sinister Creature From A Different World". An example for the second one would be "Taken" with Liam Neeson, which was also changed to "96 Hours" (in English). The sequel was "96 Hours - Taken 2". Huh?
This isn't just a German thing in Europe, either. Alien once again turned into "Stranger - The Eighth Passenger on the Nostromo" in Polish. Or "Electronic Murderer" for a James Cameron classic with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Also, I think All You Need is Kill was originally a light novel. At least that's what I read about 15 years ago. Though, to be fair, it feels like light novels are specifically written to be turned into manga/anime. The protagonist was a 17 year old Japanese boy, not Tom Cruise. Hell, it had a nerdy, swirly-glasses-wearing female mechanic. If that's not anime bait, I don't know what is.
What if you get 4, 8, 12, or 16 answers? What are you called?
Did anyone else come back after Dogen's recent video?
So thats why the credit scene is sugar rush from akb
In Germany we also sometimes have strange titles:
Fast & Furious (2009):
"Fast & Furious - Neues Modell. Originalteile." - Fast & Furious - New model. Original parts.
So, for the resident evil question, I dismissed biohazard since re7 is called that, but that made me think. What is it actually called in japanese?
Biohazard: Resident Evil
This is all I could have hoped for lol
Wait.
EDIT: I love when you seem like you're stifling giving away the answer by showing an expression to the other guy and look like you're holding it in very actively.
EDIT2: The video answered my question about WAIT I guess, you must've had this video on backlog to use the reaction haha
lol yea we had a lot of fun making this video :) Thanks for watching!
Most of my answers in the first part were correct and I actually thought about them for a little bit. Should I be concerned?
I honestly didn't understand anything! What's this?
16: Weeaboo. But I think the original title was Occasional Chicken Teriyaki. xxD
Idk John Malkovich' Hole does track as veing the title for that movie. Little blunt but gets the concept across
Got 12 correct answers, including the bonus questions, I thought I would do better
I actually new Sugar Rush thanks to the AKB48-Song with the same title for the movie :D
i got dealt psychic damage when i reconnected with an old japanese kindergarten friend and found out that inside out is called inside head in japanese
I did decent on the quiz, not because I have any special awareness Japanese pop culture, but because I chose the most ridiculous one and got it right.
This might have been mentioned before, but the point system at the end is a fail itself... having 4, 8, 12 or 16 points lands you in 2 categories...
Or am I just stupid? That could be it too.
I've been yelling the answer of the last question. Manga, ladies and gentlemen. Manga
"Yes, my favourite movie is 'captain supermarket'" It's much less...menacing of a title. Now everyone knows how goofy it is.
I still have yet to connect the dots on that title. I can understand if it was Captain Hardware Store or something due to the chainsaw, but supermarket?
+Dogen "captain smart. captain S-mart"
personal favourite: Dancing Hero
I got 4 wrong (if we are discounting Karate Kid) in the first round and I absolutely *knew* it was going to be "Captain Supermarket"
round 2, I got 6 wrong
and round 3(kinda) I got all right.
fun fact: the hangover in brazilian portuguese is "if you drink, don't get married" (" drink" meant to get drunk)
I think English speakers can infer that since the original title, "Hangover" is what takes place after a night of drinking alcohol
"if you drink, don't get married" sounds pretty terrible though lol. like the worst public service announcement about marriage you could think of.
So Resident Evil 7 in japan is Biohazard 7: Biohazard, good to know
All You Need is Kill is really good though,

I feel like if you go with the most ridiculous answer you are bound to be correct. Except if there is mission there, then its gonna be mission
I knew te Suger Rush one :-)
What I learned from this: Japanese hate numbers in titles, even (especially?) for sequels
I can't believe I knew Captain Supermarket
I thought he wore the toque ironically.
DOGEN ISN'T ORANGE??
I'm confused ... Now I want to know how Americans change the titles of foreign movies.
Wait, I don't understand the ranking system. I got 12, am I Otaku or Weeaboo? I MUST KNOW! PLEASE!
both of them look like anime characters from the same universe
You actually aren't orange? ....... Wait!!
Edge of tomorrow is based on all you need is kill?
Dag yo.
I got 15 through just guessing the most ridiculous title only to earn the Weaboo title.
That hurts man. hahaha.
I love your videos though. Thanks for making such entertaining content.
yo yo appreciate the love. high score!
hope you enjoy upcoming content as well!
Why at 13:27 Dogen pronounced 六度 as りこど、Instead of ろくど?
Why change the title... like why?? Especially if you kept it in the same language, Japanese title changing it to english is reasonable but the Japanese changing an english title to a different english is confusing.
Really? It's like just the movie title told me the spoiler already.
I somehow got Japan-o-phile. I-I have no idea how.
gambino, is that you?
Dogen must be very cute as a toddler.
Shop-- smart. Shop-- S-Mart. YOU GOT THAT?!
I got 6 occasional chicken teriyaki
😂😂😂
nandeyane~n!
My conclusion, better than I thought but I still have to review my Japanese a bit
I thought I was Japanese but it seems I am just one of the chicken teriyakis in fact
