This one made me recall: As a teenager I played guitar for our neighbor Edith Kiser to sing specials in church. Her son Richard asked me tp teach him chords on his guitar. I taught him the song "Freight Train" and after several months of him playing it all the time, my Mon told me "Please teach that Kiser boy a new song". He is now the famous Gospel Finger-style Guitarist, Richard Kiser, who travels across the nation in a large bus from church to church.

I just love that you read these books and I enjoy it so much. I like to listen to the playlists when I am spending a long day in the kitchen making and baking or prepping and canning. It makes the work seem easier. I'm enjoying this one as much as the others. Both sides of my grandparents are from Greenup, my youngest daughter lives there and it's not too awful far from where I live. Thank you Tipper for the smiles and laughter you bring with the chapters you're reading.

Talking about people getting entertainment from fighting Tipper. I'm reminded about a man my dad told me about, during WW2, when he was 14, called John Ferris, a Scotsman, who was a soldier in British special forces, fighting the Japanese in the jungle of Burmah. On his R&R he would stay with my grandparents, as he had no family to go home to, but he would spend all his money on drink, and being broke, he would convince my grandad to take him down to the docks in Belfast ( my grandad drove a small local bus, a taxi really) where he would bare knuckle fight for money. Having made up his short fall, he would give the money to my granny for safe keeping, and ask her to only give him an allowance for the remainder of his R&R in case he blew it all again. After the war he married a local girl nearby, and his grave is next but one to my grandparents, and my dad.

The fight at the school reminds me of story my father would tell me about something that happened when he was in school. My grandparents were poor and had 11 kids. My dad was the oldest and rarely had the books he needed for school. This particular year he managed to have two ragged school books and one of the wealthier, big strapping boys made fun of my dad's books and threw them out the second story window. That made my dad mad enough that he hit the boy and broke his nose. Dad got sent to the principal and when asked why he hit the boy, dad said the boy had made fun of the books he worked so hard to get. The principal just told my dad that he guessed that fellow would think better of doing that again and let dad go. Times were different back then.

Well Tipper, I'm glad that Mr. Stewart won the fight but I'm a person that don't cotton to fighting. I will say I'm glad Jesse cleaned Guy's face up though.
My dad was a whip with math. He could always figure things like volumes out before most anyone else. He was a hulking big man at 6' 4 in and 298 lbs. It took 10 strong men to carry his coffin from the church to the cemetery which was only a few hundred feet from the front door of the church. He never fought not one fight but he never backed down from one either. It feels good to remember my big ole daddy.

Jesse Stuart attended Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) which is right down the road from me. It was there that he met S.C. Hobbs who became principal of the high school where I attended. Mr. Stuart was the guest speaker at a graduation at our school in the early 1960s. His book “Daughter of the Legend” is especially popular in our area because it deals with prejudice toward the Melungeons of East Tennessee, of which I am descended.

From the time I was very young, I had a weight problem and was shy. I guess, for bullies, I looked like easy pickins, and I was constantly teased and hurt. When I was in 5th grade, I got the nerve to try out for chorus and got in. The music teacher liked my voice, and she asked me to sing a solo for an upcoming performance. I was so scared, but she finally convinced me to do it.
After I sang, my whole school life changed! Kids who once had poked me with straight pins as I walked from class to class, then came up to me and wanted to be friends. Others who had called me names, now wanted me to sit with them at lunch and befriended me.
I was so confused by the startling change and talked to my grandma about it. She told me that that's how it is when people find out you have a talent. They all suddenly want to be your friend.
She also told me that only with time would I come to know who was true and who was not. She was so right! My experience kind of puts me in mind of what happened to Jesse after winning his fight with Guy Hawkins.

That fight reminded me so much of the fights my daddy would tell his father( my grandfather) would have after selling tobacco at Fairmont NC. My grandfather would sometimes have a little liquor especially after selling tobacco. Money in your pocket and liquor sometimes doesn't mix well. My dad told about fights his daddy would get into and how they had to flee the area to stop his daddy. Of course daddy always laughed about it. I agree that fighting was some sort of entertainment back then

The dialect is very familiar although I was taught to speak “properly” by my native KY grandmother lol. Winchester is often said to be in the Appalachian foothills which I think is a bit of a stretch. I no longer live there and often miss it. Great memory’s of a country upbringing.

I've got a lot of catching up to do on your past readings but look forward to all of them. I love historical books of this time frame both non-fiction and fiction. Got hooked on Sharyn McCrumb's Ballad series back in 1991 and also love Wilma Dykeman and CC Tillery and, of course, The Foxfire Books (which I didn't discover until the late 1980s). Enjoyed Jojo Moyes book, The Giver of Stars, and also The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek and its sequel. The list goes on but just wanted to thank you for introducing me - and probably other readers of Celebrating Appalachia - to books we might never have learned about. You are so appreciated, Tipper.

Oh my goodness, I cannot wait for the next reading! To echo some, I absolutely love that color on you. It's splendid!
Back on topic, my momma always had to watch for me getting into fights. She assumed I was a bully, I was not, but I did protect the little kids while in school. Somehow, the school never told her why I was fighting, just that I was. She always cautioned me about "Running into a bigger and badder Jesse James". Sounds like Jesse was the biggest Jesse 😆.
I never started a fight, but I for sure finished my share...and your share, and his share, and their's as well. Just because I am 5, a female, and you are nearly 13 doesn't matter. If you yank their hair 1 more time, I will show you how it hurts! Sorry I left your permanent teeth on the floor of the bus, you should have thought twice about what you were planning.
Needless to say, I spent a lot of my youth on the short bus because I had absolutely no problem with the handicapped children.

Wow, I love this book. I just keep thinking about that big ole boy giving his teacher, a young girl a beating complete with two black eyes. How could anyone in his community stand for him beating on a woman? They must have been afraid of him. Maybe it’s a Western thing but doing that to a woman could get a man hung dead out here back in those days. I can see why Jesse felt like he needed to set things straight. Jesse seems to have the makings of a good man. I think the guitar playing gal might have been flirting with Jesse. 😂. Have a great weekend! TeresaSue
