I performed this with Claudio Arrau at the Evian (France) Music Festival in 1981. Breathtaking and magical. I was on second desk 1st violin, and at one point Arrau leaned over to us and whispered, "musique de chambre." Still gives me chills.
The work was originally conceived for two pianos. By the way, despite the extraordinary hurricane of the first movement, I find that Maurizio Pollini restores its almost intimate sap.
He was a master excellent pianist beautiful performance and one of the best piano concertos I always said and I say everyday a life without music is not life and also I say very proud thanks I am 80 years old and not 21
Sadly, pianist Maurizio Pollini passed away only a few days ago. So cool to watch an elegant senior pianist playing. I like his unspectacular airs during play.
This piece was composed by Brahms when he was 18 years old, but when it is played by a master pianist who has reached maturity, we feel a sense of wonder. We, as listeners, often fail to notice how the youthful aspirations of a minor composer are elevated and any sense of discomfort is smoothed out by adults.

I went backstage and met Pollini after he'd played this concerto at the RFH in about 1978! A wonderful man - and his hands were massive for his height. Bear paws!
I had him sign my Vol. 1 of Beethoven sonatas and some of his CDs after one of his concerts at Carnegie Hall. He was generous with his time, although very quiet, but not aloof.

I fell in love with Pollini at the ripe age of 11. He performed at the Chopin piano competition in Poland. I was enamored with his life performance of the Tempest in Chicago. I have been listening to his Beethoven sonatas for several years. Love him and his humility. Am I the only one that sees that?
Not at all! I’ve been a Pollini devotee for over 40 years… Chopin etudes, Petrouchka, Brahms piano concertos, Liszt sonata, Schumann Davidsbundlertanze, … and of course Schubert Wandererfantasie… and so much else. Listen closely, and you’ll notice that M. Pollini is the master of the “long line”: his phrasing is thought out over several pages, whereas all other pianists think in chunks that last a few bars only.

La musIca, come ogni arte, è soggetta a interpretazioni personali. Mi permetto tuttavia di esternare la mia perplessità su quanto da lei scritto. Non mi sembra proprio, il Primo di Brahms, un'opera così "rasserenante". Il primo movimento soprattutto è corrusco, drammatico, di una violenza beethoveniana. Clima tempestoso che ritroviamo, ad esempio, nel primo movimento della Prima Sinfonia dello stesso Autore. Il Secondo concerto di Brahms, invece, ancora più bello del Primo, ha in molte sue parti una connotazione elegiaca.

In 1962, when I was 14 years old, I went to see a movie starring Leslie Caron called "The L Shaped Room". The first movement of this concerto was played relentlessly throughout the entire film. By the time I left the theater, I'd become an enthusiastic fan of Brahms, and at 73, I remain a devoted fan.
I had a very similar experience; now being 77, I saw the film in 1963 when at art school. and ever since then this concerto has had a very profound effect on me, and I regularly have to listen to the sheer emotional beauty of this piece.

In the second movement, the synergy between Pollini and the orchestra is shattering, emotionally shattering. What an absolutely divine rendition of an enlightened composition!
Certainly a wonderful performance by all concerned. Watching Pollini, I couldn't help but notice that his hands hovered over the keyboard, and he played without flamboyant gestures, yet he came through with powerful playing.

Incredible how Brahms achieves this dark, massive lower brass sound with just 4 horns, I had to make sure there aren't any trombones and tubas in this... Beautiful piece overall

Maurizio Pollini. I remember him winning the Warsaw Chopin International Piano Competition in 1960. He was then very young boy. Artur Rubinstein chaired the jury.

At first, I did not like this concerto, thinking that is is too heavy. But now, I recognize that this is carm, sincere, and even beautiful. This is Brahmsian, like his symphony in a sense.
Este Concierto para piano en Re menor, Opus 15, compuesto por Brahms entre 1854-1857 (antes de cumplir los 25 años) se puede considerar la primera gran obra orquestal de Brahms. Aunque en 1855 había empezado con el proyecto de su Primera Sinfonía, ésta no la concluiría hasta 21 años después, en 1876, cuando tenía ya 43 años. La historia de la creación de este concierto está llena de curiosidades. En un principio, el proyecto era una sonata para dos pianos en Re menor. Esta idea la abandonó pronto para realizar una orquestación de la partitura, aunque la idea de una obra sinfónica le planteó diversos "conflictos teóricos" y acabó transformado lo que en principio iba a ser una obra para dos pianos, y después una obra sinfónica, en un concierto para piano. Durante el tiempo que duró la escritura de este concierto, el joven Brahms estuvo en contacto con Joachim, quien le aconsejó diversos cambios. "En cada ocasión, Joachim encontró algo "no satisfactorio" por lo que no podía afirmarse que el trabajo estuviese concluido. [...] También el lento fúnebre, presente en la primera versión, fue rechazado (para ser utilizado, años más tarde, en el segundo pasaje del Réquiem Alemán). El último golpe fue para el rondó final, que fue rehecho en 1857. Tras agotadoras modificaciones [...] Joachim convence al compositor de que lo reescriba íntegramente." El 22 de enero de 1859 este concierto fue presentado en público en el Teatro Real de Hannover y después, el 27 de enero fue presentado en Leipzig. En ambos casos, Brahms estaba al piano. En una carta de Brahms a Joachim, hablaba éste del concierto en Leipzig: "El primer y segundo tiempo fueron acogidos sin la menor emoción. Al llegar al final, tres pares de manos intentaron aplaudir mientras los pitos provenientes de todas partes ahogaban hasta esta mísera demostración de apoyo. [...] Pienso, en todo caso, que este resultado es el mejor para mí: me induce a luchar, me infunde valor. Después de todo estoy aún en fase de experimentación y voy orientándome a tientas. Sin embargo, pensándolo bien... los silbidos fueron en verdad excesivos." La renuncia de Brahms a escribir música de programa, o a dejar salir al mundo exterior sus secretos pensamientos mediante títulos descriptivos, fueron siempre de la mano con su absoluta facilidad para expresarse por medio de formas tradicionales y satisfacerse con medios instrumentales normales en vez de usar las exóticas paletas orquestales preferidas por muchos de sus contemporáneos románticos. Cuando escuchas esta obra, el mundo se para, ¡qué maravilla! Cada vez me gusta más. Increíble belleza en menos de una hora, cada movimiento es mejor que el anterior.
Maravilloso concierto. No lo había escuchado, y siendo un gran fan de Beethoven, Brahms también se suma a los Tchaivkoskys y Rachmaninovs, mis preferidos para conciertos para piano. BRAVO!!

I was reading Brahm's biography and it said that his 1st piano concerto was very poorly received! WTH! How can anyone listen to this and think that it is bad?? It's amazing!

The music history has amazing and hard to understand facts. You can guess that from Bach to the date when the first recorder machine was invented, most people could listen to some music only once in their lifetime.
Brahms faced such a difficult challenge all his life in being anointed the successor to Beethoven. It's astonishing he was able to create his own fabulous legacy standing in such a large shadow. He may have been, in some ways, an even better piano player than Beethoven -- trying to play his music presents an unrelenting physical challenge stemming from his enormous hands and the strength they imbued in his piano music. He was just as self-critical as Beethoven, too, even though apparently avoided becoming a madman -- reports I've read said he kept his manners and good humor always. In any case, his music has a polish and attention to detail that is equal to Mozart, in my opinion. At 57 (the age Beethoven died) he said he wished to retire and live out his old age peacefully. He'd had enough stress for a lifetime by then.

Pollini makes this piece look effortless, which it is definitely not. Amazing strength that he summons from his super-polished technique.

Incredible how Brahms achieves this dark, massive lower brass sound with just 4 horns, I had to make sure there aren't any trombones and tubas in this... Beautiful piece overall

At first, I did not like this concerto, thinking that is is too heavy. But now, I recognize that this is carm, sincere, and even beautiful. This is Brahmsian, like his symphony in a sense.

Este Concierto para piano en Re menor, Opus 15, compuesto por Brahms entre 1854-1857 (antes de cumplir los 25 años) se puede considerar la primera gran obra orquestal de Brahms. Aunque en 1855 había empezado con el proyecto de su Primera Sinfonía, ésta no la concluiría hasta 21 años después, en 1876, cuando tenía ya 43 años.
La historia de la creación de este concierto está llena de curiosidades. En un principio, el proyecto era una sonata para dos pianos en Re menor. Esta idea la abandonó pronto para realizar una orquestación de la partitura, aunque la idea de una obra sinfónica le planteó diversos "conflictos teóricos" y acabó transformado lo que en principio iba a ser una obra para dos pianos, y después una obra sinfónica, en un concierto para piano.
Durante el tiempo que duró la escritura de este concierto, el joven Brahms estuvo en contacto con Joachim, quien le aconsejó diversos cambios.
"En cada ocasión, Joachim encontró algo "no satisfactorio" por lo que no podía afirmarse que el trabajo estuviese concluido. [...] También el lento fúnebre, presente en la primera versión, fue rechazado (para ser utilizado, años más tarde, en el segundo pasaje del Réquiem Alemán). El último golpe fue para el rondó final, que fue rehecho en 1857. Tras agotadoras modificaciones [...] Joachim convence al compositor de que lo reescriba íntegramente."
El 22 de enero de 1859 este concierto fue presentado en público en el Teatro Real de Hannover y después, el 27 de enero fue presentado en Leipzig. En ambos casos, Brahms estaba al piano.
En una carta de Brahms a Joachim, hablaba éste del concierto en Leipzig:
"El primer y segundo tiempo fueron acogidos sin la menor emoción. Al llegar al final, tres pares de manos intentaron aplaudir mientras los pitos provenientes de todas partes ahogaban hasta esta mísera demostración de apoyo. [...] Pienso, en todo caso, que este resultado es el mejor para mí: me induce a luchar, me infunde valor. Después de todo estoy aún en fase de experimentación y voy orientándome a tientas. Sin embargo, pensándolo bien... los silbidos fueron en verdad excesivos."
La renuncia de Brahms a escribir música de programa, o a dejar salir al mundo exterior sus secretos pensamientos mediante títulos descriptivos, fueron siempre de la mano con su absoluta facilidad para expresarse por medio de formas tradicionales y satisfacerse con medios instrumentales normales en vez de usar las exóticas paletas orquestales preferidas por muchos de sus contemporáneos románticos. Pero al igual que él, como hombre, ocultaba un afectivo corazón humano tras un aspecto exterior implacable, así también su música es bastante menos objetivamente "absoluta" de lo que a primera vista parece.
Como el fallecido Dr. Hc. Colles puntualizó en una ocasión: Siempre hay una historia detrás de todas las grandes obras de Brahms, pero se trata de una historia personal, no de una pieza dramática, tal como los relatos de Berlioz y Liszt, y solamente está contada en música. Ninguna de sus obras es mas personal que el Concierto para Piano en Re Menor, que el propio Brahms, sin haber cumplido los 26 años, dio a conocer al mundo en un concierto en Hannover bajo la dirección de Joachim el 22 de enero de 1859.
Los primeros bosquejos se habían producido casi cinco años antes, en 1854, después de que Brahms tuviese noticias de la crisis mental y el fustrado intento de suicidio de su amigo y defensor recientemente conocido, Robert Schumann. Precipitándose a consolar a Clara Schumann en su desolación, pronto se encontró Brahms repitiendo en sí mismo las agonías del Werther de Goethe, en conflicto entre la lealtad a Schumann y su amor hacia Clara.
La fuerza de sus sentimientos pronto le obligaron a empezar a pensar en términos sinfónicos, en vez de los esquemas de la Sonata para dos Pianos que había proyectado en principio; gradualmente, fue convenciéndose de que arrojar un solo de piano contra una masa de fuerzas orquestales podía representar más satisfactoriamente el drama, simbolizando así las poderosas fuerzas del destino contra las cuales el hombre opone su propio pequeño esfuerzo en vano.
En 1856, año en el que murió Schumann, el primer movimiento del Concierto estaba terminado. Brahms pretendió continuarlo con un scherzo lento en tiempo de zarabanda (la cual ha llegado hasta nosotros bajo la forma de la Marcha Fúnebre de su Requiem Alemán), pero posteriores reflexiones le indujeron a escribir el sublime, apaciguado Adagio en Re mayor. El Rondó conclusivo, a su vez, fue revisado ampliamente antes de satisfacer por completo al cercano y joven amigo de Brahms, el distinguido violinista Joachim, por no mencionar al aún más joven y severo pensamiento crítico del propio Johannes.

I was reading Brahm's biography and it said that his 1st piano concerto was very poorly received! WTH! How can anyone listen to this and think that it is bad?? It's amazing!
The music history has amazing and hard to understand facts. You can guess that from Bach to the date when the first recorder machine was invented, most people could listen to some music only once in their lifetime.
it sounded like a minimized version of one of Beethoven's works at that time. so, it was not acclaimed then, i guess.
It didn't fit people's taste and expectations, simple as that. Similar to what the TikTokers would say about it today 🙂
Brahms faced such a difficult challenge all his life in being anointed the successor to Beethoven. It's astonishing he was able to create his own fabulous legacy standing in such a large shadow. He may have been, in some ways, an even better piano player than Beethoven -- trying to play his music presents an unrelenting physical challenge stemming from his enormous hands and the strength they imbued in his piano music. He was just as self-critical as Beethoven, too, even though apparently avoided becoming a madman -- reports I've read said he kept his manners and good humor always. In any case, his music has a polish and attention to detail that is equal to Mozart, in my opinion. At 57 (the age Beethoven died) he said he wished to retire and live out his old age peacefully. He'd had enough stress for a lifetime by then.
