- One of the finest duets Sammy ever performed in was with his pal Steve Lawrence at the 1979 Academy Awards. Together they highlighted many of the best written songs to grace the silver screen...yet were never nominated for an Academy Award.

RIP Steve Lawrence who just passed into the beyond on March 7, 2024 at age 88.
😮
Oh no, I didn’t know. My parents loved him and Eydie and I continued where they left off.
I loved him, too.
I didn't even know.....😮💨@@tommoncrieff1154
Well, nuts ... he and eydie put on a great show.
I once waited on Mr Davis. Circa 1988. My favorite restaurant guest of all time. Sammy Thank You
You know you're getting old when you remember seeing this when it first aired.
Amazing how Steve Lawrence had this ability to showman-ly entertain at any venue, while being incredibly funny at Carol Burnett's
Such great talent of them all !
This is better than the entire Oscar show from last night.
Absolutely! The 2014 Oscar show (for movies of 2023) was really bad. The old Oscars were celebrations of the motion picture and the people who made them and they were fun. The stars were classy with actual charisma. There were musical numbers beyond the best song nominees. You got clips of the acting nominees and not some other actor reading a dull script about them. Outside of the Ryan Gosling big production number and the John Cena streaker bit, the whole show was flat. Like they were bored with themselves which made for a boring show with little actual entertainment value. Yaaaawn!
Hear! HEAR! PLEASE!
Had the please of seeing Sammy in person 3 times. Best
A brilliant medley with two talents the likes of whom we will not see again. Thanks to them both, and may their memories be for a blessing.
Back in the day when we witnessed true talent! What a great tribute to classic songs that still hold up today! R.I.P. Steve Lawrence! 🎶👼🏼❤️ This was really entertaining!
Are you kidding me? Effortless brilliance from two first class legends. Ranging through numerous classics with ease and still giving each their due. There isn't a song among them that isn't better than almost every song nominated in the past 30 years. I admit to taking for granted these supreme entertainers when I was a child. Maybe because they made it look so easy and they were "square" compared to the coarser acts that were taking their place. But here we are, decades later, and we can see how brilliant and great they were compared to anything today. Let's put a school together to see singers how to do THIS.
Rest in Peace to the exceptionally talented Steve Lawrence.
And to the amazingly talented Sammy Davis, Jr.
This wonderful medley was put together by Fred Ebb and Larry Grossman. Ebb wrote the lyrics for the intro and transitions between songs, and Grossman wrote the intro/transition music. And all of it sung so well by the Sammy and Steve! Thanks for posting this gem.
Ahhhhhh…the days when stardom required actual talent not just brazen attitude. That is a terrific arrangement, btw!
Well done Steve and Sammy - two of the best.
Yes, a great arrangement, someone in the background put this together brilliantly and orchestrated it with aplomb, and then two glorious voices with talent in abundance nailed the live performance.
Back in the day, it was "THE EVENT"!!!
No Autotune! Sweet Music to my ears! 👨🏿⚖️S😌😎🙂 The SWINGING Duo Ebony and Ivory.
One of the best medleys............EVER!
Magnificent performance by two legends.
Now THAT's a medley. I love these guys. Great arrangement as well.
I agree! The medley was put together by Fred Ebb and Larry Grossman. Ebb wrote the lyrics for the intro and transitions between songs, and Grossman wrote the intro/transition music.
Wow! Two of the best ever talents. RIP Steve and Eydie and Sammy. Those were the days when having true talent and love for what they were doing mattered and shone through. Thank you for sharing such a memorable video.
Two absolute greats! Amazing talent. ❤
Hear that? That is TALENT. And those songs came from a time when movies actually had GOOD music in them.
Cool story b00mer
it took talent just to put that medley together. I miss them.
I agree! The medley was put together by Fred Ebb and Larry Grossman. Ebb wrote the lyrics for the intro and transitions between songs, and Grossman wrote the intro/transition music.
A million dollar medley performed by amazingly talented and classy entertainers. Magnificent!
Thanks for an earful of golden memories! Steve and Sammy were two of the 'BEST'. Miss them RIP...
Oh they are so great. Those were the days when stars were not just talented but had class and elegance. Men do look so good in a tux.. Sammy was the absolute greatest. Steve Lawrence wasn't too bad either. LOL. 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
What do you mean ....Steve Lawrence had great range and volume....I'd put his voice above Sammy's...
And Steve could dance too!!!!

I agree, Steve Lawrence was probably the better pure vocalist, but for overall talent Sammy Davis Junior gets my vote for entertainer of the 20th century (along with Judy Garland).
@@josephpalermo4538
It was said with irony. Of course Steve Lawrence was a wonderful singer. Sammy just happens to be my lifelong favourite.
@ Trish, Yes, Yes! And, they were CLASS all the way. At least, we can still REMEMBER what it was! And, your very correct, we will certainly NEVER see the likes of Sam and Steve, ever again, they were extremely special! Thanks for remembering them....
We miss you both!! 😘💔💔🎤🎤👑👑
true talent and class all the way !!!
Wow! Outrageously great performance. And outrageous that these songs were not even nominated. All these great standards - shocking! I was thinking which song shocked me the most. I guess it was - Our Love is Here to Stay.
Many of those early songs in this medley were written by the Gershwins: some of the best popular music ever written.
Two of the smoothest performers ever. It must have taken weeks to rehearse this intricate number but they made it look so easy.
The thing is, that it probably wasn't rehearsed at all. maybe a run through, The Rat Pack didn't like to rehearse.
Amazing
SDJ. What a beautiful voice.
That time of the great entertainers!
This is the exact same performance that Steve Lawrence mentioned on The Tonight Show - the clip was just posted a few days ago!
I was a real little kid in 79, great time to be alive
I remember watching this live on tv.
Two very different but very spectacular voices.
Well done gentlemen. That's Putting On The Ritz! ❤RIP❤
OMG!!! I remember this!!!!
This is a huge medley in a complicated arrangement... all of those lyrics, wow.
It is a huge medley that was well done but there's no way something like this would ever make it on TV today. Execs would not allow that much time without a commercial break. I hardly even watch TV anymore for that very reason.
Wow! That was awesome! These were the days of good entertainment. I haven't watched the awards shows in decades.
So wonderfully wonderful!!
All the wonderful songs from Singin' In The Rain that weren't even nominated! Can't say baby or mention cities.
In some cases there were eligibility issues, since a lot of those songs were written for earlier musicals.
Where is the talent today?! Two great talents there!
Oh I miss steve
I feel really sorry for the drummer. I just watched it twice. Mind boggling.
This is simply marvelous!
These guys had some great songs, may they rest in peace!
Now!This was Entertainment!
fantastic talents. Loved those guys thru the years. WOW and a sensational orchestra. Reminds me of a tune: I'm in Heaven...
This was simply wonderful! So incredibly entertaining! Boy, do we miss these guys! Man, oh, man, they could sing! How did they remember all those lyrics? A very complicated arrangement!
Fantastic!
This is the best thing I’ve seen on CZcams in maybe…ever!!
Brilliance!
Supreme talent!
All the GREAT singers are gone.......now all thats left is whipped cream..........
Hey! I wonder if this show (or song) got any nominations from Emmy! (And several are by the Gershwins!)
This was brilliant! Thank you!
Thanks for posting this fantastic medley. This is pure class, the current Academy producers should take note. One thing, I don't think "Singin' in the Rain" was eligible because it was introduced in the 1929 film "Hollywood Revue", not the 1952 classic. And the Oscar for Best Song was not created until 1934. czcams.com/video/OQIDza2v8Z8/video.html
This kind of entertainment is gone over. I miss the good old days. RIP Boy's
I don’t like the Oscar’s anymore so political. This is how remember the Oscar’s when they were fun to watch! RIP to both these legendary entertainers
Hi do you have the 1989 Hollywood Christmas parade Royal variety performance 1980 circus with the stars 1979 the stars salute Israel at 30 American salutes Richard Rodgers the Royal variety performance 1966 1961 Royal variety performance or other performances and medley from Sammy
I wonder why none of the songs Elvis was nominated.
The bulk of these songs were written by maybe 10 composers and 10 lyricists. They covered the first 50 years of Oscars, very selectively. It's been 45 years since this 10-minute medley, almost as long. Try to come up with a ONE-minute medley covering the past 45 years. You'll get a couple of good songs, I'm sure. But sadly, mostly dreck.
It wouldn’t be too hard to fill 10 minutes. Even if one excluded all the songs Disney didn’t submit before and after the one-song-per-movie rule change, there have been plenty of good songs excluded due to either eligibility issues or bizarre lapses in taste. Now, whether all those worthy selections would go down well with everyone old enough to remember watching the above medley as it aired is another question.
@@joeypellegrino635 That's perfectly fair. What's dreck to me might be preferable to younger consumers over the old stuff. We'll compare notes 50 years hence and see what's still around.
@@dmiller1000 Well, maybe sooner than 50 years, just to be sure we're both still around. By then I'll be old enough to complain about the kids and their music and their cyborg modifications, etc.
Sammy Davis didn’t sing candyman in Willy winks why should it bother him. If this was in 2000 I would include I believe I can fly from space jam.
There's nobody on the planet today who could do that. Our children and grandchildren are doomed to a lifetime of entertainment mediocrity.
Calm down b00mer
Davis is historic but Lawrence had the talent of a cheap lounge act.
Huh?
