Made in Abyss has a theme of "value", the refining of our desires and the crystallization of want into wishes and wishes into the story of our lives. In the manga's lore, value is divided into 5 stages.
Shii - The initial formation of a wish, childhood dreams or the realization of one's first desires. (Riku discovers Reg and learns of the fate of Lyza and resolves to enter the abyss)
Kuu - Accumulation. Training, saving money, recruiting friends, or simply growing up so that your wish can take physical form. (Riku and company meet Ozen/Nanachi and learn to face the dangers of the abyss and descend further)
Gutsu - The Solidification. The moment action is taken and one's goal is achieved or lost. (Riku and company defeat Bondrewd and take their last dive to the sixth layer)
Mei - The liberation. The monkey's paw. This is both the sensation of accomplishment and radiance of the achieved wish, but also the regret and mourning of its corruption as the chaos of the real world distorts its final form from what you saw in your heart. (The entire season 2 arc. Almost every character's "Mei" is explored here.)
Haku - The irreplaceable. The thing you truly wish for that can only be seen after the experience of Mei. That which is worth more than everything, including oneself. (Yet unpublished by the author)
VOH, and the season of the anime it is made for, encapsulates the concept of "Mei". A wish, made in innocence, has taken form, and is brought into the world and butchered beyond recognition. VOH has gentle and ethereal vocals that seem shackled by grounded instrumentals, and it really captures this part of MiA's theme of value and wishes well.
thank you for this analysis of the value system in mia. I hope it comes into play when we figure out what the abyss is and if its an eldritch being or cosmic horror from another world. Like if the abyss is the haku we speak of as everyone in the series seems to be drawn to it.
The vocals are sung by Takeshi Saito. Great analysis of the track. It's a shame that large parts of it were cut for the episode...

it has all the mystery, excitement and triumph that a series that delves this deep can produce in the minds of those inspired by it. Kevin has said before that he had read the manga before the anime was scheduled to come out and from someone who loses the series, I'm not surprised, it feels like he was divinely inspired when writing the OST. Mad props to Kevin Penkin!

I love how this song gives you a sense of desperation and hopelessness. It fit so well with the scenes it was in. Utterly soul crushing.

Very nice! Glad you reacted to this one. You've commented a few times wondering how the music for this series matches with the show itself. Personally, I'd say that the music is weaved in exceptionally well with the scenes and animation. The show wouldn't be the same with different music, as the chosen ost for each scene does such a good job of encapsulating the emotions the director was going for. And along that same vein, the music takes on additional feelings when you understand what the familiar sounds across the soundtracks represent in the show.
