Hello friends,
and welcome back to Swift Guitar Lessons for another by request song tutorial. In today's session I've broken down how to play Neil Young's 1972 classic "Needle and the Damage Done." In this lesson you'll learn how to play Neil's instrumental cross picking techniques, before tackling basic strumming and lead techniques for the verse sections. Let's get started!

I know it is kind of off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released series online ?
This song seems really easy to play at the beginning but it’s not that easy and it is complex , especially when trying to combine singing with it. this is probably the Best tutorial for this song on CZcams , and I’ve crossed some in the last few days. Thanks!
Oh, the memories, been looking to relearn this, thanks
Thank you, I had been playing this slightly wrong for years. Great lesson
I like how this guy breaks it down and also sounds like a genuinely pleasant guy.
Wow! Crushed it. I adore your version. Thank you a ton for the lesson. This song reminds me of my late father, who adored this Neil Young song.
Superb tutorial! This is one of those songs that you hear and love but, at least for me, I think, no way will I ever be able to learn that! Far too twiddly to get my head round! But you nailed it in this tutorial! I am now playing it around 80% perfectly and I can't tell you the buzz that gives me!! Thanks so much and keep up the great work, man! Cheers from Manchester, England.
Thanks a lot Rob. Have always loved this song by Neil. With everything going on right now in the world, I find I have more free time to dedicate to hone some skills. I appreciate the lesson as a great diversion. Keep them coming!
Hey Doug, glad you’re excited for this lesson. I know everyone is feeling super stressed, so I’ll do my best to keep the lessons rolling out. Be well and stay healthy. -Rob
Terrific vocal Rob. Still one of my favorite Neil songs which I learned back in my Villanova days. Thanks for giving me the impetus to relearn it.
Hiya thank you so much . Love Neil Young and this song very powerful and sad . Love Pocahontas too . Thank you . Hope everyone stays safe 💚 Xx
Lessons don't get better than this! Thanks Rob!
Love your lesson here. It really helps when you count the time out for me the beginner. Looking forward to more.
Thank you so much for breaking this song, I played it, incorrectly for 30 years. I played it at my brother Jon's funeral, he died from a heroin overdose at 19 years of age.
I think that you did an amazing job teaching this great classic song. Many years ago I would only try to pick the beginning and that was about it. Great lesson!
Your voice suits the song perfectly!
Best instruction I’ve seen. Brilliant.
Nice job dude! Great voice. I watched it because I perform this one as part of my set. Love your version.

Tell me why by Neil Young guitar tutorial please
Hey Rob, always a joy! I'm getting more into recording and I was wondering which microphone you're using here? And also what microphone would you recommend on a budget, if this exact one is a big pricier? Thanks!
Hey John, thanks. This is the Earthworks SV33, a professional, high-end condenser microphone. For a cheaper, but perhaps equally impressive option, I’d recommend the SR314 by the same company. On a serious budget, you might want to take a look at the Rode NT1A, or NT2A.
@@swiftlessons Thank you very much!
Klasse 👍...Beste Grüße aus Deutschland 👋
Hi Rob,
Great lessons all the way. I've learned "In My Life", "Michelle" and am now working on "Needle" with you. My question is about the Faith. What are your thoughts? Are you free to pm me about it? They look like good UK live performance and Logic Pro guitars. Is that the case?
Can u do Dear prudence by the beatles
well done. it would be cool if you could do a non-vocal arrangement..as in music that mimics the vocal line.
👏👏👏👏
Nice! Wouldn't the chord in the 4th measure be Gm6/Bb rather than Gm6/B ?
Dang, you're right haha, I got hung up on the minor part, forgot to change the root note. Thanks for pointing that out, wish I spotted it!
Yes it would Kevin... Since the bass is descending, it should be written as Bb... Same for the Fsus4, Bb is the 4th degree....NOT A#... Yo
Excellent run down on this song, i learn it here through your guitar tutorial, then do my own arranging with that info on the piano...very helpful and professional presentation...thank you so much!! I played this for 2 hours straight last night...
What is that guitar model?
Is that a portrait of a relative behind you or just art?
Nah, just a garage sale find, but apparently there are a ton of similar paintings floating around the Philadelphia area by the same artist.
Reminds me of gordon lightfoot Edmund Fitzgerald
you’re not doing the same thing than the original guitar
The original is much more wild and less exact. This lesson shows you what the important notes and patterns are, but it will be up to you to abstract this very concise explanation to make it more like Neil’s style.
