  • After missing home and watching countless Jbay vids I decided to make one of my own counting down my favourite surfers and the waves they surfed at Jbay. I gauged the countdown on originality and flow.
I'd love to know if you agree or who your favourites are....

In this edit, Curren is by far the best... His bottom turns are incredible, and so are his roundhouse craves... More radical, more speed projection, and incredible technique. Revolutionary even today.

I vote Jordy Smith’s ride out of those clips, for the variety of moves and that epic floater at the end.

Love Currens organic, reactive, energetic style. He actually looks like he's freely surfing for the love of it rather than trying to be technical. I was surfing Gnaraloo in 2020 and got to see Dave Macaulay attack double overhead Tombies with such enthusiasm and raw energy. There's something about that generation of surfers that's missing in most of the new school pros.

Occy's wave was so good he even changed from a blue vest to a yellow one half way through

Tom Curren's 1st wave that day on a new board or one he hadn't ridden yet, incredible surfing & graceful, those bottom turns are a thing of beauty

Great rides for sure but I wouldn't say the best. For example, there is video footage of Occy vs. Bruce Irons where Occy absolutely crushes it backside like no one ever has before. Let's also not forget rides by Slater and Toledo, Mick Fanning etc.

    No. 0: DANE REYNOLDS
We all know that wave where he does a turn and then somehow makes a bottom turn to sneak under the lip and get absolutely pitted

As along a time local at J Bay I would love to have seen Tom Curren on modern boards at JBay. He is and was by far the most stylish and most impressive surfer to grace the face of Supers...
His style and timing was unbelievable..

Aside from Curren and Occy, More than likely the top 5 waves ridden at J-bay were probably by South Africans free surfing... Tomson, Parmann, Burness, Potter and D. Stolk..just to name a few.

Narrow and thick semi-gun thrusters shaped in the late 80's (before things would get to narrow and thin) as Curren is riding in the vid were the fastest boards ever shaped by hand, and still are as computer designers don't get out of thin rails and domed decks.

Although every single one of these waves are historic, nothing fits J-Bay like a twin. Doesn't have to be a fish, but ideally it would. The perfect match would be Mikey February on a fish, going really fast down the line and making use of all that beautiful canvas without the hickups thrusters always have (or Torren Martyn on any of his boards).

Truth. These guys ripping off other peoples work is pretty lame. I can see for Hollywood movies to use a clip but for surfing movies/footage the cinematographer owns the shot and should be compensated or credited.

Well, everyone certainly has and are entitled to their opinion and perspective. Kudos, on a decent post, but we've seen way longer and better rides and in well over double overhead stuff. *Tony White. *Greg Day ("Bonjour G'day") - who did a pre 2005 A.I. v Slater thing where he surfed himself out of further contention by just disappearing down the point (circa 85/86 I stand corrected on the year. It was during an event heat). You're thumbnail is a big, bold statement and shows a lack of depth. Think about it. You could have titled it as "Some of the best rides" but even that's beyond the pale. Remember, a fact is a fact is a fact. You are speculative at best. Nonetheless take heart on an ordinary effort LOL. *You oughta be a WSL judge. NOT. Regards from Tuckombil via Alstonville and East Ballina. MATE.
