- Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will star in a NEW Karate Kid movie in December 2024. But it appears to have nothing to do with the Cobra Kai series. What is going on? Ken Cole breaks down everything we know and gives his thoughts.

Ralph Macchio is still playing Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan is still playing Mr. Han. This seems to be a bit confusing for fans. Daniel LaRusso was the main character in the Karate Kid 1-3 and Cobra Kai and Jackie Chan played an alternate-universe Mr. Miyagi in the 2010 reboot.

Ralph has always been pretty vocally protective of the franchise for nearly 40 years. So, seeing his involvement in this project gives me a little optimism about it. And I'd like to believe he would think to have some piece of creative control written somewhere in his contract(i.e., reminiscent of executive producer credits in the Cobra Kai series). This could turn into something worth watching. I'll try to keep an open mind before I call it a disaster.
I don't know why ralph is doing this because he's already said countless times that he doesn't want both worlds colliding plus how is that gonna work once cobra kai starts filming

As a miyagiverse fan, this just seems like a concerning and questionable idea. The obvious reason is that we are talking two different universes. Jon Hurwitz had clearly clarified on multiple occasions that the KK 2010 and the original KK take place in two different worlds. As you said, it is very confusing how they are going to pull it off. At the end of the day, this movie is simply set to be a cash-grabber from which Sony can greatly benefit. Seeing Ralph and Jackie sharing the big screen is something that can call many people’s attention. (Specially to many people who aren’t as big fans of the KK/CK universe). Money is all they care about. Where is the integrity?
My biggest fear is how much this movie will affect our beloved CK/KK franchise. From what we know so far, it looks like it has the potential to contradict everything Robert Mark Kamen and the big three have built. As you mentioned, the S6 and this movie shooting schedule overlapping is a very concerning aspect as to how that will affect the final product of the last season of Cobra Kai. We want them to give it their all for this final season and adding this project at the same time really seems unnecessary to me. I think the priority should be ending the Cobra Kai series in the most rewarding way possible before adding any other spin-off projects like these.
Wondering why Ralph decided to be a part of this project. Like you said, he always said no to ideas like these before Cobra Kai. No one treats the original KK like the bible more than him. It’s just his legacy. He must have been 110% convinced that this idea would not hurt the franchise. There’s no other way he would have accepted to reprise his role on this film. Unless, some contract political thing could have been going there in which Sony might have forced him to be on the film but we don’t really know anything about that

I try to look at like Metallica. A lot of their albums, after a certain point, lost my interest. But before that they put out albums that I really enjoyed. So I don't waste my energy or time one the ones I didn't like; but I can always go back to the ones I liked and enjoy them.
That can apply to most artists and their fan base. I just used that one as an example.
They needed Ralph otherwise nobody will watch....therefore they paid him handsomely$$$$...definitely way more than his CK salary

In the last episode of Cobra Kai, Jackie Chan will make a surprise cameo as The Angel of Death after Daniel is finally beaten and killed by Kim Sun Yung at The Sekai Taikai, escorting him to the after life where the new Karate Kid movie will take place.
Excellent breakdown, Ken! Right now, I'd say: it makes zero sense to think Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han live in the same universe. I sure hope the writers have some brilliant idea that I can't imagine. But I have major doubts.

Great breakdown, Ken. At this point, knowing what we know (which isn't much), I'm just confused as to why this is happening. If Ralph is signed on, there must be something we don't know that makes this all make much more sense. Or maybe he just couldn't turn down what was offered to him for financial reasons. Either way, I'm hesitant as well, and just hoping this doesn't negatively impact the production or release of Cobra Kai S6 or any future spin-offs.
Unless they change the script it looks like they might be making glorified cameos, I just wish Sony would put all their energy into the marketing of season 6 and wait until season 6 is complete to make that new movie
The last "Karate" kid movie with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith was a joke. It should have been called the Kung Fu kid, because Jackie Chan practices Kung Fu not Karate.
They are cashing in on the success of Cobra Kai.

Mr. Cole. Is it possible that Ralph Macchio is doing this New Karate Kid project with Jackie Chan away from the Cobra Kai series because he feels dissatisfied about his character's diminishing role in season 6 ?? I suspect that allowing Daniel LaRusso to achieve an easy victory over his greatest enemy Terry Silver in the last episode of season 5 has ultimately led to this conundrum. Now his character has nothing substantial to do anymore. Perhaps the last season will focus more on Johnny Lawrence and Daniel shall be relegated to being a supporting or background character. Ralph's not going to like it.
But Johnny was always the main character in Cobra Kai so it makes sense

So now they're amending the original stance of KK 2010 and Cobra Kai taking place in two separate universes. We'll see where this fits and I'll give it a shot. I just hope it's on the big screen!

I think the 2010 movie was referenced in an episode of Cobra Kai, wasn't it? That means the 2010 movie is a movie in the Cobra Kai universe, with Jackie Chan portraying the part of Han. So, in the new 2024 movie, Jackie Chan can show up as himself playing Han. It's like having a movie within the Cobra Kai series, but also the new movie continues the Cobra Kai reality. A movie, within a series, within a movie.
So in the Cobra Kai universe, Jackie Chan is a real life film actor and Mr. Han is a fictional character from one of his movies.
Maybe, I doubt it as Jackie doesn't do alot of tv and plus he's super busy fliming stuff too. I can see maybe a cameo but him fighting? nah.

@@chazarcola7639 Yes, that is what I mean. But I honestly have no idea how they will make this reconcile Cobra Kai with the 2010 movie. Maybe somebody figured out a cool way, but I can't wrap my head around it right now. Just really excited for what is to come, though. Jackie had great collaborations with Chris Tucker and Owen Wilson, so I am looking forward to this partnership.

As a huge, life-long Karate Kid franchise fan, I am cautiously optimistic about this new movie. It must be a good enough story if Ralph has agreed to star in it. I'm thinking it's going to have an alternate timeline. Sony Pictures reps have said that this movie will be a continuation of the original movies. So this movie might ignore the events of the Cobra Kai series and go in a different direction. We'll likely get more details in the coming months. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Hopefully it will turn out well.

My thoughts are that Mr Han is the descendant of the Miyagi ancestor that went to Okinawa and will find himself mixed in Daniel Larusso, due to Daniel's history of being from New Jersey in the first karate kid movie.

0:43 Sorry but that's BS right there, Hollywood don't just cast anybody from the public especially to "Lead Star" one of their franchise movies. When they say that it's just to garner attention and gain positive publicity around their latest movie. the Reality here is that the studio itself already had their "Main lead star" chosen, and they will just send them either to the whole "open casting call", where YOU, members of the public, any budding "Actor", etc will turn up; and none of you will actually get picked, they're just making people think it's all open.
I don't trust this at all, don't get me wrong i luv Jackie Chan (and Ralph Macchio) but that 2010 "Kung Fu Kid" with Jaden Smith was horrid. I'll bet any money the studio behind this have done a deal where they aim to create their own "Karate Kidverse", and they've somehow managed to talk Ralph Macchio into reprising his role as the o.g. *Karate Kid* from the 80s; and connect it up with Jackie Chan's wise Master from that other movie, and this will be somekind of soft-reboot, or reimagining of the Karate Kid with both of those characters.
Any money this WILL Not be connected in any shape or form to the awesome "Kobra Kai" series on Netflix. I bet deep down Ralph is not happy with this at all and he most likely tried to push for a Kobra Kai movie to wrap it all up; but the typically cynical Hollywood Studio don't want that; they're seeing $$$$$ and instead intend to create a whole "VERSE" out of the Karate Kid franchise.
Once ALL the details of exactly what this is are revealed this will become hella divisive with the Fans, especially all of us who simply wanted a Kobra Kai movie.
I agree, I was hoping that when this video started. You were going to say that the Cobra Chi writers were involved.. They get an amazing job marrying new stories with the past stories.. But life, everything evolves. So we just have to go into it with an open mind.

This news of a new film with Jackie Chan returning, was a pleasant surprise. It will be interesting to see how they connect that continuity with the original Cobra Kai version of Karate Kid.

It's very odd for crossing the Karate Kid films with Daniel Larusso and The Karate Kid with Mr Han. There could be a reason for Daniel to be on the East Coast remember Daniel moved to California from New Jersey, and he may be on the East Coast to try and recruit Julie Pierce to help him with the global tournament another reason could be because of his potential legal issues with the fight between him and Silver possibly being recorded and he needs someone who knows Miyagi Do to assist with the training of the combined Dojos and who knows perhaps he might have a running with a certain head of discipline at a high school in the New England area who might get drawn into the conflict on the West Coast on the side with Kreese. As for Mr. Han's reason for being in the United States specifically on the East Coast, it might have to do with Dre Parker. Remember his film was released in 2010 almost 13 years ago when Dre was around 10-12 takin that into account maybe Dre moved back to the States to attend College in New York and has settled there and Mr. Han is visiting him where he has a chance encounter with Daniel who shares his situation with a man who reminds him of Mr. Miyagi. Mr. Han sympathizes and chooses to help train Daniels students along with Chosen, Johnny possibly Barnes and Julie.
That according to Johnny would be BAD@$$

This new Karate Kid movie is lacking a spicy ingredient, Cobra Kai! I love Ralph Machio, being of Italian ethnicity seeing Ralph succeed means a lot to me. But this movie is gonna have as much spice as lemonade. I heard that it's gonna be Ralph's Character from my Cousin Vinny. It's gonna lack that Sting without Jonny, Silver, or Kreese in it.

The only way I could see this movie being in the same universe as CK is if this movie takes place in 2023. Remember that Cobra Kai is still taking place in 2019, which would give them four years of story. At this point, Daniel and Amanda are becoming empty nesters because Sam has long since graduated high school and Anthony just graduated. Maybe Sam or Anthony decide to go to college in New York or something... I don't know! To be honest, them doing a whole other version of Daniel Larusso instead of trying to link the story with Cobra Kai would be more interesting. But as I said before, after years of rejecting multiple Karate Kid remake scrips(except Cobra Kai) why is he saying yes to this one??? Is he being held at gun point?? Does he owe money to the IRS??? Do he have a mortgage to pay off??? maybe the actor's strike really hit him hard?? Who knows??? All I know is that this movie is gonna tank, or just enrage the Cobra Kai fans!

Cobra Kai did it perfect. They were respectful towards the past which is most important and its something most reboots do. If they just had young new kids most older fans wouldn't care or watch especially if they recasted or gender swapped original characters. They gave equal attention to the past characters and developed new ones which why we care and love all the characters. The reboot in 2010 was awful. If this is not part of Cobra Kai series it will be ruined. And it will definitely hurt Cobra Kai if Daniel Larusso is there for a cameo and it isn't connected to the original story. Very nervous now. Hopefully Terry Silver returns!

This is going to be exciting. I don't think this is a Hollywood slowly rebooting thing. And the reason for that is i don't think Ralph would say yes to something like that. He has said no to many projects through the years before Cobra Kai. He holds it to close to his heart.
I definitely think this is the original Daniel and original Han. We just don't know how it all connects yet... but im sure when we learn it will makes sense.

Daniel Caruso was originally from Brooklyn New York which made perfect sense when you said been filmed in New York which means he could have went to New York and bumped into that situation and help so it's good so it's going to be very interested in a nice like you said over the cool of the whole family tho

I agree this movie is simply a rushed cash grab think about it the movie is set to be released in December 2024 there is no way that pre-production, filming, and post-production can effectively put out a good product in 12 months plus the original idea of the new film. Was centered on a 17-year-old of Asian descent coming to the United States and teaching a restaurant owner self-defense. I'm guessing the studio realized that idea wouldn't work. So they scrambled to do this idea and have it be a contest to have an unknown be the lead which again sounds terrible. Especially given that we were told for years that the 2010 film wasn't canon with the Cobra Kai series this idea should be scrapped.
Ken, we gotta brush up on our Mandarin and apply heavy amounts of the anti-aging cream so we both have a shot of being casted as the Karate Kid. 🤣

When I first heard this, I thought that Mr. Han would be related to Mr. Mi..(The OG teacher) that trained Daniel.
My theory. Daniel will have to go back to New Jersey for a funeral in his family tree. This way the movie can come out between cobra Kai season six part one. and cobra Kai season six part two. Otherwise, how in the world could Daniel LaRusso be in two places at the same time just a thought.

Jackie Chan's Karate Kid should have been the Kung Fu Kid. To have called it that (Karate Kid) is Hollyweird's ignorance. This is two different cultures, two different martial art forms & two different universes. This is confusing. Historically Okinawan karate was influenced by White Crane Kung Fu. Goju Ryu's kata's retained many of White Crane's methods. Sanchin is an example but there are differences. Are they going to do the Okinawan-Chinese martial arts connection?

This time they want a already skilled martial artist, in the orignal Ralph and William had to learn from scratch and it showed at times.
The big 3 in an interview on another CZcams channel mentioned that this isn't any of their doing and basically how they didn't want this to happen, but, here we are, idk what's gonna happen in this film, worried it's not gonna be respectful of prior canon, but guess time will tell.

It makes me wonder if they'll try to combine the season 6 Sekai Talkai global tournament storyline to somehow introduce or spinoff the new movie from the series, since the new character is supposed to already be skilled in martial arts, perhaps he'll be a fighter that will face the Cobra Kai cast in the Sekai Talkai.
It's interesting, I wonder if TB3 will include any references to the new movie.

I have also thought a lot about how they are going to resolve that Daniel and Mr Han are in the same world as we know that the film from 2010 exists in the cobra kai universe. Here is a solution I thought out. Karate Kid 2010 in cobra kai is based on a real event and the real Mr. Han moved to Brooklyn and opened a Kung fu school. Daniel's favorite movie is Karate Kid because it reminds him of growing up with Mr. Myagi. Daniel finds out that the real Mr. Han has a Kung Fu school USA Daniel goes all fanboy and travels to the school to meet Mr. Han. That's the only way this can work I think
So the real Mr. Han will also be portrayed by Jackie Chan playing an ordinary guy who looks like the movie actor Jackie Chan.

If the series creators have not yet reversed themselves in stating the Karate Kid film reboot and Cobra Kai are in different and separate universes, expect Mr. Han to star in the new movie but not appear in the show at all.

As much as I enjoy Jackie Chan's work, well... most of them anyway, and I love the original karate kid/cobra kai series, this is an unholy abomination. Now I'm wondering who's blackmailing Ralph to do this. I mean what's going on? Did Sony kidnap Ralph's kids or something? I can definitely guarantee this is going to be a travesty.
