    This is too late to help you, but it might help someone else. When the outer ring stays locked in like that, just use a small section of a hacksaw blade to cut a notch in that remaining ring. Orient the blade so it only cuts on the pull stroke, and that will keep metal cuttings out of the water jacket, though it still might be a good idea to reach in with a rag afterward and wipe toward the opening to pull out any stray cuttings. Very carefully cut "just far enough" to get through that ring. The resulting notch will make it a breeze to get the remainder of the ring unlocked. You can stop short of cutting all the way through the ring to make sure you don't score the edge of the hole and will still be very easy to knock the ring out since it will break the rest of the way through your cut with very little effort on your part. If you do happen to leave a bit of a scratch in the margin of the plug hole, using a tiny bit of sealant around the new metal plug will eliminate leaks.

      Great information, thank you. This will certainly be helpful!

      Yup, I had to do the hacksaw blade thing on one myself. The inside was too corroded to pry on, but got a hole big enough to get the blade in next to the edge. Got it close to being through it and used a small cold chisel to break it apart then it popped out pretty easily. These plugs are a pain if the motor is still in the vehicle. Mine was in a boat, really fun time. Wish they would have figured a more permanent solution solution at the factory to seal these holes off.

    I just put a Dorman expansion plug in my F-150 a few weeks ago. I'm very leerly of it, but it's holding so far. I'll need to replace the remaining before too long, but with traditional ones.

      How far did you tighten the nut? Do you have to tighten till snug or pass snug? Thanks.

    Looks like your flywheel gear has a tooth broke off. You may want to replace it when you change motors. Thanks for the video. I think I have the same problem ,as I also have a 4.3 and it is leaking coolant off the bottom of the starter. I'm hoping it isn't the head gasket.

    got 2 in my diesel 7.3 idi both are very slightly leaking from the bolt threads it seems like just a tiny drip if I'm looking for it got 500 miles on these plugs maybe i should tighten them up a little bit more and yes they are completely in the hole.

    If you got spear 2 days, crc will sort 100 percent. Spay it 2 times per day for 2 to 3 days. That she'll right their you can't remove will literally slide out.

      @BuildYourOwn  Před 2 lety +3

      It's holding up great! You just got to make sure you get the right size. Super tight fit but it gets all the way in there

      Yep, it's still going strong and no issues. Make sure to get the right size for the perfect fit. I went to the parts store 2-3 times if I recall.
