    After I promised myself to never ever do something like my cover of The Astonishing album again, I decided to take a "lighter" challenge this time around. I knew the new Dream Theater album would have a 20 min song on it, so I decided that I would cover the song as quickly as possible. So on the day of the release, here's my guitar cover of Dream Theater's title track 'A View From the Top of the World' from the album by the same name.
    Cheers to all prog snobs out there!
    All guitars are recorded through my Axe FX II XL.
    Guitars recorded and mixed with Cubase.
    Video edited via DaVinci Resolve.
    All credit for the music goes to Dream Theater.

    • @XGLDF
      @XGLDF  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks man! It's a combination of techniques. The first step nowadays is usually to create a tempo track within Cubase. This makes the tab creation process easier. It also makes picking out fast solo phrases easier, as I can choose to repeat, for example "the second beat of bar 354". This really helps when picking out the solos. And if I feel that I want to confirm something, I slow the song down in Amazing Slow Downer.
      Of course it also helps to have covered DT by ear for many years and getting familiar with Petruccis patterns and habits.

  • @ClifftopTragedy
    @ClifftopTragedy Před 2 lety +1

    Amazing! I can't believe you learned it so quickly. I am watching how effortless your fast picking is so I can try to learn something from you. I always feel that Petrucci just bullies the strings into submission with pure willpower but I prefer your gentle persuasion. I need to try different pick angles to see what suits me best. Loving this new DT album more every day. Keep up the good work.

    • @XGLDF
      @XGLDF  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you so much! I think finding what's comfortable is important. When I started playing, nobody taught me how to hold a pick, so I just naturally held it like this. Especially the first couple of years, people told me I had to change it, because it would keep me from going beyond a certain level. I then saw Marty Friedman pick similarly, and that's when I thought "If he can do it, I can do it".
      But yeah, the way Petrucci alternative picks some of his fast phrases is insane. I would never dare play some of them without using some hammerons and pull offs.

    What's up with these guitarists that angle their picks backwards? I've seen a couple people throughout history have that habit. David Chastain is one I can think of off the top of my head that never corrected this... Chris Feener is another, but he corrected it several years back. It's like nobody ever tells them. Nice video, thank you for the content.

    • @XGLDF
      @XGLDF  Před 2 lety

      ...and Marty Friedman, Vernon Reid and many others. There's way more than just a couple. And trust me, we get people tell us that all the time: "Correct your picking technique". It is people like that who made me question whether or not I should start over from scratch instead of advancing. And it is people like Marty Friedman who proves that you don't necessarily have to start over if it works for you.
      In my case, I started picking like that because I didn't have a teacher when I started playing and that was what just felt natural to me. The bottom line is, people pick in different ways. And considering that it works for so many technical guitar players, maybe we should stop calling/implying that it is "incorrect".

    • @JustinOhio
      @JustinOhio Před 2 lety

      @@XGLDF I taught for several years. I've had many students who had only been playing for a short time start lessons with this issue and having them correct it was the first priority. I'm going to very respectfully disagree with you, and here's why...
      Yes, you certainly can "get away" with picking like that, have a successful career, "make it work for you", etc. But, I like to use the analogy of the two finger typist. Someone can get pretty damned fast and efficient with typing using only a couple fingers on each hand, even faster than some others who use all of their fingers...but they will never be as good as they possibly can unless they go back and unlearn that and do it correctly. Same thing applies. I would suggest you see some guitarists who have corrected the issue and see how it affected their playing after. To be the absolute best you can be, if that is one's goal, then this is something I would strongly suggest that someone correct.
      A lot of this also depends on just how good they want to get as well. For example, (extreme example), if someone only ever cares to play AC/DC, Metallica, etc...then yes, getting away with that will be fine. If you're happy with where you are and what you're doing then by all means, stay with it! But if someone is making the claim that they can be just as good had they never switched, I would disagree with that 100%. Cheers!

      I get that a lot. But in reality there are more people playing like this than you might imagine. Marty Friedman is an example of a similar picking style.
      But the origin for it, in my case, is just that when I started playing I didn't have a teacher, nor did I look things up on the internet. This was just what felt natural to me. I never even payed attention to like a photo of a guitarist at the time to see how they held the pick.
      After a year however, some people told me I had to change the picking style, or it would hold me back. But that's when I found people like Marty Friedman. And I thought, if he can do it like this, so can I. So I never changed it.

      I already write music. Why would I need to "stop this" for that? :) I play in a progressive metal band called Seventh Dimension where I write all the music, and I also write orchestral music for various visual arts, on top of that I release solo stuff and been part of several collaborative projects.
      Making covers is just what I do as my nerdy side projects, because it's fun :)
