  • A very good, wet and cold afternoon session spent at Stratford on the Great Eastern Mainline where we see countless services from Greater Anglia, Transport For London, London Underground, London Overground and freight from Freightliner.
Theres so much to tell about this station but I won't go through it all.
Stratford station was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway in 1839. A year later a large engine shed was constructed along with a large works which is now the sight of the impressive shopping centre.
When the line was opened it was used running track which was 5ft, this was done on the basis that the wear and tear on the trains wouldn't be as high, although because of this it meant that other railway companies had to adopt the same size if they wanted to share the line. It wasn't until 1844 that standard gauge was seen as the more easier and common gauge to go with. Which is 4ft 8 1/2
From when the station was opened to when the Great Eastern Railway made an appearance in 1862 - 1923 the station went through hundreds of changes. Lines were being added from all over the capital to give better ease of access to commuters trying to get in and out of the city. Platforms were built and more trains were coming throuh on a daily basis.
In 1877 several changes took place and include: a fourth line going from Bow Junction to Stratford, Western Junction was moved further south, New goods lines were added to ease on congestion with passenger traffic and a new signal box was built.
And in 1891 to 1893 the following took place: two more lines were added taking the total to so because of the growing number in traffic and the signal boxes at Western, Central and Eastern Junctions were all replaced with more modern structures.
There really is so much to try and tell about this station but I simply haven't got the time to go through absolutely everything. I could probably do a 10 part documentary about the station!!!
I'm gonna skip right up until the modern era. A full history can be found on Wikipedia about the station and how it helped the local area.
All of the station facilities are actually located underneath the station with ticket barriers just outside the shopping centre.
The station had to be redesigned when the central line was added to go through the station. Along with trains having to serve the North London Line.
My next station will be Ipswich on Great Eastern Mainline.

I do agree that Stratford is absolute bedlam even outside the rush hour and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a rush hour film from here in the near future because it is a fantastic station. This is also known as Stratford Regional. The other one is Stratford International. Sadly hardly any Eurostar 373's are seeing use on HS1 at the moment, so perhaps not a sound from them could be heard from Stratford Regional! I can't believe that only one container was on the class 90 hauled container train! That wouldn't have made much money there that's for sure! Probably running at a loss I would say and maybe something like this on a graph! 📉

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 2 lety

My only assumption is that the container train is supposed to be running almost empty so when it gets back to Manchester it can start getting loaded with containers to take back to Felixstowe as quickly as possible

Went to this station in the summer. One of the best stations I’ve been to. The best thing I saw was 315s.
I was stood at end of the platform that you were on, but on the other end at right at the back, with permission from staff to film there.

  • @nottinghamtransportenthusi2784

Interesting to see the Maersk Sealand container in the consist on the working hauled by the 90's was battered and interesting to see that it was on one of the lower level Freightliner owned wagons! I'm sure whatever was in it was worth it on money terms! About 99% fresh air sums it up in a nutshell!

  • @nottinghamtransportenthusi2784

Another excellent video there sir with a great variety of rolling stock to be seen! I see that you opted for your usual spot, hence why less London Overground services featured along with the likes of the class 317's for Greater Anglia! Interesting to see the 90's, one in the presumably original livery and the other in the Powerhaul livery, with one singular container on board. If you wondered what the new container flats were, then they were new Freightliner Genesee and Wyoming grey Ecofret ones. The IPL and Maersk Containers on the second freight train were on the brand new wagons as well! Freightliner now have a load of brand new Ecofret wagons from VTG and... well them I suppose if it counts! GBRF have new Ecofret Wagons from VTG, including brand new blue ones. Perhaps a shame that GBRF didn't turn up here but I guess you can't win them all! You mentioned Queenstown Road (Battersea) as one of the stations on the to do list and maybe there should be a battered containers at episode from there or Battersea Park! A Great Eastern Mainline run on a Central Line service? That would be some journey if it ever existed! 😂
