  • This is max. He's new and he's also terrified of humans. Here i begin the long, slow process of getting him to tolerate handling.

    A lot of bird owners say it can be hard with Cockatoos to use treats...as some just don't have a favorite food or treat that drives them as a reward. Sure looks like Max definitely likes his nut butter though. There is so much I don't know about birds....I really enjoy learning more about these amazing creatures. Thank you for sharing. Take care!!🥰🥰🥰

      You are so correct! I love training Max because he is so smart! He won't necessarily respond to rewards and even though he's scared of me, he's pressed right up against the bars of the cage, looking at me. Praise and fun are equal currency to these guys...

      That happens a lot because people’s bird diets are so junky that treats don’t matter. When you give a bird a healthy diet treats start mattering a little more.

      J J I also have a grey, I rescued him from an abusive home. Unfortunately I can't handle him because he HATES hands, has a broken toe on one of his feet and they destroyed his wings through repeat cutting.

      I love the African greys. They are also one of the most commonly abused parrots. Max also has wing issues. He's a big Bird and his clipped wings are growing back one feather at a time. The new feathers can't take his weight and regularly break. He can fly a little now, but I'm facing the prospect of him never flying properly. He's on a proper diet now, but he loves his millet... I let him indulge

    We have a Moluccan Cockatoo who is acting really weirdly especially if there are more than two people near him, he will just scream without a break. Its also extremly hard to win his trust to the degree where im sort of afraid to try. I would never do this as he is known for going for the fingers and not letting go again.

      @drfill9210  Před 2 lety +1

      Loud as in 129 decibels? Sorry to say you have the loudest cockatoo species in the world- look it up 🌝. Here's where it gets difficult. They are highly intelligent and are considered one of the hardest parrot species to keep. Have a look at my videos, then go on to bird tricks. Winning this birds trust will be a long term commitment.

      I agree. Should have showed with an out of control cockatoo instead of a tame one. Then we'll see if the peanut butter really works.
      Not all cockatoos are the same. There are many different ways to calm them. I have never ever used treats with any of my animals. Only kind soft words. Encouraging words.
      Dan from "Mr Max Tv" whispers "use your inside voice. Whisper." Several times. Max does calm down. He also let's max rant for a few to get it off his chest. Lats of toys and attention. Love and caring.

    • @drfill9210
      @drfill9210  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah things like video quality were very low on my list when doing that. Max is super smart and super defensive. You will note that I was constantly changing my body position and body language in response to what Max was doing. In the end he accepted the treat but only when my hand was as far away from my body as possible. Since then he has made a huge amount of progress, he will come right up to me on his own accord now. Still doesn't like being touched, but in reality, I took him from his previous environment to help him, not so I could have CZcams vids on how I've trained a cockatoo...

  • @ronsbrat525

      Yes. They are smart, require lots of space and time. He's getting better, but he still can't fly. Maybe never will. So he has no choice but to be in his cage, but it's bigger than the one I found him in and I let him out to roam the house every day
