To me cozy horror brings in the elements of nostalgia like your favorite middle grade or ya horror book from back in the day that you read for comfort as well as an inviting but also spooky atmosphere.
I love the Twilight zone The writing is still immaculate and the themes are still timely And you are right about the acquaintance factor of the show nowadays I grew up watching the show in syndication as a child, I also saw the movie based upon the series directed by John Landis as a child
I really like over the garden Wall as well that is some classic spooky cottagecore horror I really do like the vintage Halloween card feel of this art style and animation
I love Coraline and scary stories to tell in the dark they are childhood spooky classics I'm a child of the 80s so I got to read that when it first came out I'm talking about scary stories to tell in the dark and it's sad that it's on the band and challenged lists Reading scary stories to tell in the dark nowadays doesn't really scare me but the illustrations by Stephen Gamnel still do
There are many reasons why we do things like riding roller coasters and watching horror movies and reading horror fiction Things like this offer catharsis of a sort I'm a horror hound who likes some gore in their movies and books and if you like that you like that and if you don't you don't this is why fiction and other art is subjective it's all up to the viewer or readers interpretations

I do think that the fellow who made the comment about gentrification in horror does have a valid point to a certain extent but you are correct in seeing it as a bit of gatekeeping With that being said over commercialization add watering down of the horror genre is not a good thing, because that is what happened to a lot of children's classics lately to the point where classic characters have no identity at all
I really like the original movie what we do in the shadows Wellington New Zealand is cozy My favorite line from that movie comes from Rhys Darby's werewolf character who is the leader of the pack and a gentleman because he says We're werewolves not swear wolves

I really love I'm the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Strangely cozy. Oh and of course The Shining.

I would classify the author Darcy Coates as cozy horror although she has ramped up the gore in her later books
