  • Bailiffs in County Derry are coming under attack from salmon poachers operating on the river Foyle.
Routine patrols on the river Foyle now require the crew to don protective equipment for their own safety. Organised gangs illegally netting salmon on the County Donegal side of the river near St Johnston and Lifford have become more aggressive over the past two years,
Stones and even shots have been fired at these bailiffs.
Foyle Fisheries Executive Officer Gerald Hayduck says that poaching and antisocial behaviour by the poachers is as bad as it has ever been in this area.
I would say a great deal were involved in it...a large number.
However, thanks to the work of fisheries officers and water bailiffs it is unlikely that the poachers will be as successful this year as they were last year.
News report broadcast in July 1977.

To this day the British territorial claim to Lough Foyle reaches right to the high water level on the Donegal side. The lough is very important to UK nuclear defences; it guards the NW approaches to the Trident submarine base in Scotland.

The uk state using the water Bali’s who in a lot of cases ended up in jail for the things they did against poachers were and are the real bad men here even today. The river foyle and no part of the Ireland in any way belongs to England though they still think so( who ever told them that lie- like who owns Scotland but the scotch and wales but the Welsh- English bully boy taticts - but they will loose it all and the faster the better).

Foyle bailiffs, just another form of BrItish oppression which still exists to this day unfortunately.
