Summary -
Ichigo Kurosaki never asked for the ability to see ghosts -- he was born with the gift. When his family is attacked by a Hollow -- a malevolent lost soul -- Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper, dedicating his life to protecting the innocent and helping the tortured spirits themselves find peace.

They replaced Grimmjow bc he lost his arm, Yammy was bout to get kicked out of the Espada because of the same reason. Losing an arm makes you considerably weaker. Remember that one.
The concept of hollows can be a bit confusing.
Hollows have existed for the longest. They usually don't have any humanoid features; i.e human skin, human organs, a zanpakuto of their own etc.
Arrancars are hollows that succeed in taking their masks off, attaining humanoid features. Aizen uses his Hogyoku as a catalyst to make his own arrancars. That's why Wonderweiss knew his name as soon as Aizen turned him into an arrancar, before that he was just a regular hollow.
The members of the Espadas have existed before Aizen showed up, Aizen just turned them into Arrancars with his hogyoku.
There are 6 types:
Hollow
Shinigami
Arrancar=Shinigamied hollow
Vizard=Hollowfied shinigami
Quicy
Human
Ichigo is the only one, who have the 6 traits.
