Cody,, That's one of the drawbacks of our love of classic old autos, working with Decades and Decades of old parts and the pieces on them...Something is bound to be Seized up, Rotten, Broken, or we Break it trying to fix it....lol

As an Australian, this model never came to my country as a coupe unless you include the Mainline ute, the Australian version of the Ranchero for the same era. It's a definite surprise to see one of these old workhorses wake up so easily from a 35 year coma, but deep down, something told me it would, and I hadn't seen your previous video on it.
If you want to see an interesting comparison, Look up the Ford Customline and Ford Mainline from Australia. To save money, Ford Australia used the previous year's tooling of its American counterpart with each new model until they started building the Australian Falcon in 1960. Every model of Australian Falcon after that evolved further and further away from their American namesake until the very last one, having the option of a 4 litre inline 6 cylinder, good for 1000 reliable horsepower without major mods.

I always loved these 1955-56 Ford Mercs, My Dad had a 1956 Mercury Monarch here in Alberta Canada for more than 20 years then he sold it still in very good running condition. It had a 312 t-bird engine with a 4 barrel Holley carb, lots of power for that time.

In order to crank the engine you may want to connect the ground to the engine block and better yet, the starter. And as mentioned by Mike Johnson always check for oil and spray WD-40 in all the cylinders. I also like to build up oil pressure by driving the oil pump with a drill prior to attempting a start up.

If I was starting a car that had sat for 35 years, I would buy new points and condenser, wires, plugs, new cap and rotor and rebuild the carb first before I tried to start it and have new wires and a coil and check and change the oil. Also have some water for the radiator and new hoses. After all, if you want to do a job, do it right or not at all.

I've watched this one before and felt like it again. I would like to leave you a couple tips on getting one started.... For one, you have the cap off and flick the points an for most part get a spark but its weak or intermittent. Take points out all the way and sand underneath to insure a good ground for them. Also it its kinda nasty, sand that as well as the spark depends on grounds totally and the screws that hold the breaker base in... loosen and then retighten to get the grounds going. In the manual for repairs to the electrical are the words grounds, grounds grounds! They really emphasize that

That sounds pretty dang good. The 223 on a '58 Panel Truck that I rescued after 40 years sitting had some more noise in the rockers. Some adjusting to the valve lash and it quieted right down. Also, I have a '56 Ford Customline Gasser, same car as yours, a two door post. Those are great little cars.

You might as well go ahead and fix you an auxiliary gas tank to use on all the start ups, it will save you lots of time, most all brake parts from'49 to '64 are the same on Fords. Keep at it buddy I'm doing about the same thing you are doing with these old relicks, in fact I've got to run across the line Saturday and pick one up in Fairplay , S C , we might cross paths one day.

here is a little tip for ya brutha.....instead of trying to use a screw driver to jumper the engine and feed it fuel at the same time...if you take a piece of wire and jam it under the post marked [S] on your starter relay, [ONE OF THE 2 SMALLER WIRES ON THE RELAY ] ,then the other end of the wire all you have to do is touch the positive battery post and the motor will crank ....you can also put a feed wire to the [I]terminal of the starter relay [ AND JAM THE ORIGINAL WIRE OVER TOP OF IT[ and run it to the positive battery post...this will allow you to make it a bit easier on you with less wire ......you can also add a switch to each jumper wire and then all you have to do is throw a switch or to and that will make it easier on you

My first car was a 1947 Plymouth 4 door sedan that I bought from a doctor for $60. I drove it for one year and traded it in for a 1956 Ford convertible. I bought that car at John Short Motors in Houston, Texas for $250 (he gave me $100 for the Plymouth and I gave him $150) it had a 3 speed standard trans, a 312 V8, and a 4 barrel Holly High Top carb. I put a Fenton floor shift in it, glass pack mufflers, and a chrome dress-up kit on the motor. I graduated from high school in 1965, they were drafting us for military duty right out of high school to serve in Vietnam, we were so young then. I joined up not knowing if I would make it back or not so I gave my car to my cousin who had just started high school and he drove it until he graduated. It was a great car.

At 10:20? That's not going to break the battery unless the battery was absolutely ancient with brittle plastic.

I wouldn't be so worried about the battery, I just would not hit it with a ratchet.

Mom's dad, our grandpa, had one of those, about the same year, maybe a little newer, with the in line six, but four doors. He was crusty old, retired farmer who could roll tobacco with one hand. I remember every time he took us out on that car he use to rev the motor way up and ease the clutch out, which seem to take him a century. It had the infamous three on the tree. He liked to go fishing, but we never did catch nothing.

My 55 Ford had a 1957 292 Y-block with 312 heads with the T-bird single adjust rockers and a 4 barrel carb. Out ran the state Patrol one day. Really pissed the cop off too.

While I don't quite agree with how you're going about getting the old gal running, (a squirt of Marvel Mystery Oil oil in each cylinder would kind of help), I do like the fact of what you're going about doing. I've spent part of my life in North Carolina and now live in North Florida and can say from my own experience that the climate on this side of the country can be pretty brutal to these old cars; watching them start up after sitting up for years is a real kick. With that being said, it's even a bigger kick in the ass when they're running around on the street again. I'm all in to see these old survivors wear their rust and faded paint, (at least for a while), just to show everybody they've earned the right to live again. That little two-door Ford sedan is a real nice and rare piece and deserves all the TLC that it can get as well as time on the road. It doesn't have to be perfect looks wise to have a good time with her as long as she's mechanically sound.
CCC, you've earned yourself a new subscriber. I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos. Have a good 'un!

I watched your video on the 50 Mercury and now this video. Both were interesting. When it comes to buying these old cars, what do you plan to do with them? I know guys spend tons of money and thousands of man hours restoring an old car to factory new condition. It would be nice to have a solid driver. One that the engine was decent and the paint & interior clean. If you have any sort of garage or breezeway to put these under it might make a better video. You could show the underside, the interior and highlight the steps you took to get the engine started and have it stay running. You are a very lucky guy to have the 56 Ford and the 50 Merc. I hope you take care of them, they are worth saving.

Thank you so much for watching! I normally buy, sell trade, I try to rescue old cars from abandonment, get running and driving and sell or trade and replace with another. I have a few that are just personal cars that I dont sell. And thats a great idea!

Hey bud. I just ran across your channel yesterday. I’m glad it’s running so well for you. And yes brakes suck for everyone. But it’s part of it. I’m gonna keep watching you and if you do want to part with the old girl give me a holler? I may be interested in her. I’m in north East Tennessee just outside of Knoxville. So it wouldn’t be too far for me to pick it up. Ttys
